Hawk HiLights
Weekly Edition: May 6, 2015
Through a shared commitment, the mission of ChesterJoplinInverness School District is to
help all students reach their full potential and to promote learning as a lifelong process.
Staff Member of the Week If we walk through the letters of what it means
to be a CJI Hawk, CJ Manska epitomizes each
expectation, which is why he’s a natural
candidate for this week’s Staff Member of the
Week. Hawks “have respect for self and
others.” CJ greets everyone with a smile and a
witty comment as he works through the many
demands of his day, and often puts in extra
hours behind the scenes, as well. As a
“responsible” member of our community, every
project, repair, and task are completed in a
timely manner, and with pride in the final
product. CJ also has mastered the art of
“working together and communicating” while he
is managing his crew, prioritizing projects, and
serving as a liaison between the school, the
town, and the many contractors hired to
complete the major renovations needed to
keep the school and campus in such pristine
shape. As a natural comedian and good friend,
CJ “keeps a positive attitude,” and is always
there to support and encourage the students
and staff to stay positive. Finally, CJ’s devotion
to the CJI buildings and campus are evident on
a daily basis, and certainly helps everyone
here to “stay safe.” CJ puts the safety and
needs of the students ahead of everything
else, and is one of the finest examples of what
it means to be a CJI Hawk. Student of the Week
Nate Nelson is CJI Student of the Week.
Nate is an extremely hard worker and is
always willing to help his classmates if they are
sad, or need help working out a problem. Nate
is always eager to learn more about science
and math!
Nate is a sports fanatic. He can be found
playing tag, football, baseball, and has even
played a few rounds of tetherball. Nate is an
excellent wrestler, as well, bringing home many
medals this last season. Nate loves to spend time at the farm and
enjoys being outside exploring new things.
Nate recently went to a Jason Aldean concert
and brought back pictures to show all of his
classmates. Nate is an awesome brother and
likes to share stories about his siblings. He is
a kind friend and a leader in the classroom!
Thank you to the voters of ChesterJoplin Inverness School District for passing both the
Technology Levies and the Building Reserve Levies. The students of CJI are extremely fortunate
to maintain the continuous support of the community. Approving levies can’t be taken for granted,
it is a major accomplishment, and as educators and as a school board we recognize our
responsibility to the taxpayers and students of the school district. I want to thank everyone who
summited their ballots in support of the levies, and I would like to thank all those who volunteered
their own time tallying the votes. Passing the Technology Levies and Building Reserve Levies
will focus levy dollars on improvements to maintain CJI School District as a safe, clean, and
functional place for students to learn and teachers to teach. The levies will also protect the
taxpayers’ investment in schools.
Sincerely,
Thad Kaiser

ForwardThinking in its Quest for Success
MTSBA recently had the pleasure of facilitating the ChesterJoplinInverness School District
(CJI) through an intense week of strategic planning. Debra Silk and Joe Brott spent 3 days over
the course of a week with the Board and Staff Leadership Team. We met on April 16, 20 and 23
to articulate the Core Purpose and the Core Values of the District, to develop a longterm
envisioned future of the District, identify possible barriers and drivers to success, and to identify
the shortterms goals and strategies that will prioritize the focus of the District and require the
attention of the Board and Staff. In any school system, where schools have undergone consolidation, there are always
challenges to overcome. The CJI Board and Staff Leadership Team is committed to and
enthusiastic about continued efforts to recognize the unique attributes of the communities of
Chester, Joplin and Inverness while at the same time celebrating the unity of the three
communities through the children that are served by CJI. As noted by Brett Earl, the CJI Board
Chair, “Like any school district we have challenges to overcome, but we also have three great
communities that have come together for the best interests of all of the children in Joplin,
Inverness and Chester. The ultimate goal of our communities is to ensure that each and every
student has the best possible experience and education as a gateway to success in whatever
that student chooses to do in life. As trustees, we are privileged to have the opportunity and we
understand the responsibility we have to our students and the communities we serve.” We commend the Board (Brett Earl (Board Chair), Brad Kammerzell, Jeff Mattson, Chandra
LaFrentz and Greg Woods) and Staff Leadership Team (Thad Kaiser (Superintendent) and David
Jamison (Principal)) for their commitment to ensuring the continued success of CJI. Debra A. Silk

High School Music Festivals
CJI High School Music students did an amazing job at District and State Music Festivals
this year! On April 17, High School Band and Choir competed at District Festival in Havre. Both
received an “Excellent” rating with the Band, even receiving a “Superior” rating in sight reading. On April 18, several small ensembles performed in the Solo/Ensemble portion of Districts
with the Kylee Vinson/Brooke Woods vocal duet and Madeline Woods’ piano solo moving
forward to State Festival. On May 2, they performed in Missoula at State Music Festival and both
groups received an “Excellent” rating. All students who participated in these festivals did an amazing job this semester working
toward their goals, learned a lot in the process, and represented CJI very well in these
competitions!

6th Grade Calgary Trip On April 30th, at a very early hour, the 6th grade class boarded a bus for the annual trip to Calgary. The students and chaperones drove until we reached the Sweet Grass Border Crossing. We were lucky enough to be greeted by Officer James Brown who gave us a tour of the offices, and even put the students in a holding cell. After touring the building, we met Officer Mills, and his dog. He showed us how the K9 units work, and some of the kids were given K9 badges.
We hopped back on the bus and headed toward the Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump. We learned so much about the history of the Buffalo Jump and watched an interesting video about the buffalo hunters.
Our next stop was Calgary, where we checked into our hotel and went up to the Calgary Tower. The glass floor at the top of the tower made some of us nervous, but it was an awesome view. After eating dinner, we went to the water park. We were greeted by 4 water slides, a wave pool, and other crazy pool toys. The kids loved it, and we probably could have spent all night there. The next day, we woke up early and headed to the Telus Spark Science Center. We had the whole place to ourselves! There were a lot of great handson science activities involving energy, friction, weather, and even areas to make your own movie. Later, we got our own planetarium show about the Solar System. Next, we went over to the zoo and saw all sorts of animals. They had penguins, gorillas, hippos, and even dinosaurs! After the zoo, we went to dinner and watched a movie.
Saturday morning was when our real adventure began. We were all on the bus, ready to go to Waterton Park, when we discovered our bus didn't want to start. After a while, we decided to send the kids to the mall with some of the chaperones. Luckily, this mall was huge. The kids enjoyed another movie, some bowling, and a lot of shopping! Since our bus didn't want to leave Canada, Patty DeVries came to our rescue. We were so happy to hop on a bus and head back to Chester. We returned home with a lot of stories to share and a trip that we will never forget.
