the litter bins, make sure not to leave the
hole blocked in such a way that the next
person to arrive cannot access it, unless the
crows have got there first!
Readers of the letters columns in the newspapers will be aware of the interest that is
taken in the first sightings of the swallow or
the first recording of the call of the cuckoo.
These occasions have traditionally been regarded as harbingers of summer. An equally
compelling indication came my way last
Sunday, 29th March, when I came across my
first nesting pair of cool pop wrappers. Can
the main flock be far behind? As we move
on from the lower temperatures of winter we
usually observe a noticeable increase in litter, particularly where groups tend to gather
or congregate with the lengthening evenings.
The presence of a nearby bin or even one at
the centre of the action seems to have no
bearing on things. Even through the depths
of winter, the main street and approach roads
into Clane produce a minimum of four
packed wheelie bins of litter (walked in) in
any week. With the advent of summer this
greatly increases as much more ice-cream,
cool pops and cold drinks are consumed.

The disappointing aspect to all of this
is that all through the summer, from the1st
of June to the 1st of September, a special
endeavour is made by so many to coincide
with the Tidy Towns effort. It is heartening
to see the efforts made by residents associations and individuals to keep their estates
trim and tidy. Clane has traditionally been
one of the highest achievers in our population category. For years we came second to
Kinsale or Clonakilty, both of which in time
went on to become national winners. There
is great potential here for success with a
little extra effort all round: I don’t mean
anything excessive but perhaps as little as an
hour in the week. Watch the notice board for
the commencement of Tuesday evening
work turnouts. Tools of your choice are
available to participants at the Abbey Community Centre. Another suggestion might be
to pick up three or four pieces of paper as
you go from your car to the shop. Make sure
your household bins are well packed down
and closed so that the crows can not get at
them in the early morning. Also, when using

Launch of "Coiseanna" 15th April 2015.
Clane Local History Group will launch the
4th edition of their annual historical journal
"Coiseanna" on Wednesday, 15th April at
8pm in the Clane GAA Club, Prosperous
Road, Clane. This year's journal will be
launched once again by Mr. Des Marron,
Mayor of Clane, who has also written an
article for it.
The Spring League, with only one week to
go, has been a very close contest since the
3
The purpose of the journal is to keep
alive, communicate and share the rich earlier
heritage which is to be found in Clane's historic environs and to engender a deep sense
of pride in that heritage on the part of the
residents of the Village both old and recent.
The reader-friendly layout of the journal is a
tribute to Jim Heffernan, who designs
and edits Coiseanna. This year's volume runs
to 124 pages and contains numerous articles
on notable people, places and events with
Clane connections. A glance at the Contents
page reveals an extensive list of articles
ranging from James Joyce's Schooldays in
Clongowes to Clane's Hidden Gems. There
is also a large Miscellany section containing
humorous and interesting snippets from the
past.
The Man of Aran which is being filmed on
the neighbouring island of Inishmore by the
Hollywood director Robert Flaherty. A
strange and comic tale, we are drawn deeper
and deeper into the island life of Inishmaan
and the characters who inhabit the island and
influence Billy’s life. With strong and powerful language, the play is not suitable for
children under sixteen.
The Cripple of Inishmaan was first
performed in The Royal National Theatre in
December 1996 and more recently was performed on Broadway with Daniel Radcliffe
(“Harry Potter”) in the lead role and with the
part of Johnnypateenmike being played by
Pat Shortt. The cast in Clane is as follows:Kate Osborne Michelle Flannery
Eileen Osborne – Elaine Moore O’Donohoe
Johnnypateenmike – Andy Kelly
Billy – Robert Gallagher
Bartley – Evan McGarr
Helen – Sarah Houlihan
Babbybobby – Conor Burnell
Doctor – Val Brennan
Mammy – Aine Grace
Coiseanna still costs only 5 euro per
copy which represents excellent value. It
would make an ideal present for Clane people who have had to emigrate in recent
years. Clane Local History Group would like
to acknowledge the support of Clane Project
Centre.
CLANE MUSICAL & DRAMATIC
SOCIETY
As mentioned, the play’s wonderfully
descriptive and evocative strong language is
not suitable for children under sixteen. Every character has a depth of personality that is
reminiscent of John B. Keane but even deeper – it’s a joy to read and a wonderful road
for the cast to travel between now and the 8th
April when the play opens.
Clane Musical & Dramatic Society would
once again like to thank everyone who supported the annual concert Sing into Spring
which was held in The Westgrove Hotel on
Friday 27th February. In addition to the production team and Master of Ceremonies for
the night renowned Playwright and award
winning Actor Robert Massey, who kept the
audience entertained between acts special
thanks are due to the cast who provided a
wonderful night’s entertainment. Thank you
one and all.
The Cripple of Inishmaan will be
staged in The Abbey in Clane from the 8th to
the 11th April. Tickets are on sale in Marron’s Pharmacy, Main Street, Clane– or you
may book tickets for this iconic play (limited
to over 16s) by phoning Anne at 087

No sooner was the concert over than rehearsals began in earnest for the Society’s
next production - The Cripple of Inishmaan
by Martin McDonagh.

Spring is still everywhere and Summer is
only just around the corner now and we are
all feeling uplifted by the stretch in the evenings and signs of new life, flowers and
shrubs in our gardens, variegated trees, all
help to uplift our spirits.
ICA
Our guild is still beavering away on Thursday evenings. We are fortunate in having a
number of multi-talented members in our
group, who generously share their talents
with us lesser mortals. As a result we have
decorated plain white candles, made distinguished St. Patricks Day cards and realistic
looking hedgehogs- among other items. Earwigs beware this summer! Our dedicated
crafts promoter- Ita, attended an Arts, Craft
and Produce Day at Menlo Park Hotel, Galway, and gave a glowing report on sameproducing some sparkling jewellery as proof.
We got very good advice from Chiropodist,
Ruby Whelan on foot care and tips for keeping us on our toes and healing our heels. We
enjoyed two very sociable outings during the
past few weeks- Singing into Spring by
Clane Musical Society in the Westgrove Hotel and Strictly Musical in Killashee House
Hotel. Congratulations to all concerned. The
St. Patricks Day parade was once again a
great success- well done to the hard working
committee. On Saturday 21st we took part in
Guild of the Year Competition, hosted by
Kilcock Guild. Congratulations to overall
winners Maynooth, Two-Mile-House came
second and Lexlip third. God bless and grant
a happy future to all the girls and boys who
recently received the sacrament of Confirmation. Best wishes to all for a very happy Easter. For information on ICA please contact

As the season of Lent draws to a close
and we are facing the most important feast of
the Christian Calendar as we recall the death
of Jesus on the Cross and His rising to new
life with God -yes its Easter. In order to prepare for this we are encouraged to enter this
last phase of Lent in a spirit of thanksgiving
and asking for the grace needed to live lives
away from sin and close to Christ in every
way. Look at the sacrifice He made for us to
secure graces necessary for us.
First of all on behalf of the Evergreens I would like to offer our congratulations and best wishes to all the children from
Clane and Rathcoffey schools who are about
to make their first Holy Communion. May
God bless them all and shower graces on
them and on their families.
The 11th Clane St. Patrick’s Day Parade was, as usual, a spectacular and tremendous success -thanks to Mary Dunne and the
hard-working Parade Committee for all their
dedicated work in getting this organized each
year and all the wonderful festivities that go
with it. There’s always something for young
and old alike.
We will be soon having a Sale of
Work, so maybe if you are de-cluttering and
have any unwanted items we would be grateful for them. What might be unwanted by
you might seem like gold-dust to someone
else; that’s how it goes.
CLANE ST. PATRICK’S DAY FESTIVAL, 2015

It is difficult to get a day free from
First Communions and other important family occasions all across our area. We are
aware that there are First Communions on
Sunday 10th but that should not be a problem. We are trying to avoid late evening
games, which have been our practice over
many years, because late evenings can turn
out surprisingly cold for younger children.
Let us keep our fingers crossed for nice
weather, in particular that it may be dry.

Clane Tidy Towns Group participated as
usual in the National Spring Clean on 21st
March. On an everyday basis throughout the
whole year we normally pick up the litter in
the village area and for up to half a mile out
each of the six approach roads. The Spring
Clean effort resulted in the filling to capacity
of a very large skip provided by the County
Council in association with An Taisce. The
Tidy Towns members were, as usual, working with local residents along the rural roads
and laneways. Residents of a number of
housing estates were also involved. The
Ballinagappa Road was meticulously
cleaned out as far as Betaghstown Cross.
Even though this road was cleaned in a simi-
lar way last year, and in fact over many
years, it made the biggest contribution to the
filling of the skip, this and a few other recognized black spots like the Circus Field
beside Lidyl, Nancy’s Lane and the old lane
which led to Abbeylands House.
The answer to the problem is for cars
to carry a small bag for emptying at home.
The message emanating from the serious
dumping at the various black spots is not to
avail of the offers which we frequently hear
from callers to our doors who make offers –
usually very reasonably priced– to clean out
our garages and dispose of our rubbish. Such
people do not have a refuse disposal licence
and the rubbish invariably ends up a short
distance out the road.
Help was not as forthcoming this year
as it was in previous years and one was left
with the horrific thought that if this National
effort has ever to be abandoned it will be a
sad day for the rural environment. It is always very impressive to see the huge work
done along the roads around the Donadea,
Staplestown, Coil Dubh and Timahoe area,
where the organizers are Tír na Móna Community Council. They invited the Clane participants out to Staplestown to join them
with soup, sandwiches and tea at the GAA.
With that load off my chest I will briefly
take the opportunity to announce that Saturday 11th April will be the occasion of the
first regular sweep of the kerbsides along the
Main Street. Please volunteer your assistance at the Abbey at 11am. Regular Tuesday evening work parties will re-commence
on Tuesday 14th April at 7.30pm (again at
the Abbey). The work is varied and may be
to do with flower tubs, shrubberies, etc.
Please do come along whenever you can.
Your support will be much appreciated.
How can the same skips be filled year
after year, considering things are left so
clean and perfect on the day? The answer
has to be based on two deplorable practices
which are so widespread and ingrained in the
community. One is that certain

black spots in the countryside are widely
regarded as appropriate for dumping. These
are generally places with deep ditches and a
safe pull-in for cars. Bags and boxes filled
with rubbish are to be found in abundance
on the road verges and in the bottoms of the
ditches at these locations. A JCB has to be at
hand, as well as a tractor and trailer to lift
televisions, washing machines and heavy
jeep tyres from the bottoms of deep ditches!
The second type of roadside litter is to be
found evenly spread along the roadside
verges extending for mile after mile. This
includes coffee cartons, plastic and aluminium mineral containers, beer cans, glass bottles, bar wrappers, plastic sandwich wraps
and squeezed up brown paper bags. These
are thrown from the windows of passing cars
and in the course of 12 months approximate
to an average of a yard apart along both
sides of every road in the country. From
about April on they are covered up by the
fresh vegetation.
The following is a partial reprint from an
article in December 2002 by Gary McGuire
in which he refers to some lands and properties in Clane. Some place names are still
extant while others are puzzling.
“...Memorial to an indented deed of lease
and release dated 1, 2 March 1768 between
Rev. Harman, Dean of Waterford and Moses
Cahill of Clane. Dean Harmann sold to Moses Cahill, for £170 12s. 6d., the house and
garden called the Assembly House, the
house and garden tenanted by John Dunn,
and the house and garden now tenanted by
Peter Doyle, all in Clane, plus one acre of
land in Coolmuck, Co. Kildare…”
[Registry of Deeds, Book 257, page 500, No.
169532, paraphrased]

Readers were asked if they had any clues as
to the translated meanings of the place names
or their locations. It was disappointing that
not a single reply was obtained.
Rather than suggest answers at this
stage we would like to leave the list to the
consideration of readers. Some suggested
answers will be offered in next month’s Le
Céile. If any readers would like to suggest
answers they will be very welcome. Such
responses should be received before the next
deadline of April 27th.
