Christmas Lunch for the Clapham Park Over 50s

Can you spare time page
for the elderly?
I would like
to wish our
readers a
very
Happy
New Year.
As 2014
drew to a
close,
Clapham Park Project was busy
supporting some of the more
vulnerable members of the
community. In mid-December we
supported the Clapham Park Over
50s to put on a Christmas dinner.
We also, through the TLC project,
continued to visit elderly and frail
residents at home to ensure that
they were well and prepared for
the holiday period.
Much of this work sees CPP
relying on local volunteers, for
whose efforts we are most
grateful. We are continually
looking for people to give some of
their time as volunteers so, if you
are interested, please read on as
there is a feature on page 2 about
our work for the elderly.
Best wishes

Christmas Lunch for the Clapham
Park Over 50s
30 elderly residents
tucked into a delicious
wonderful three course
Christmas lunch cooked
by volunteers on 11
December. The lunch
was organised by
Clapham Park Project,
with funding from
Metropolitan Clapham
Park. The staff and
volunteers helped to decorate the Community Centre and served the
food. We were able to provide transport for some of the less mobile
residents, but a number of the elderly were unable to join us for the
lunch as they were not well.
The Over 50s were also entertained by the enthusiastic choir from
Glenbrook Primary School, ably accompanied by the Deputy Head
Teacher on keyboard. The choir sang traditional well-loved
Christmas carols, and
were pleased to be
invited.
Sue, Chair of the Over
50s Social Club, said “I
really enjoyed the
Christmas dinner and
the great company. It
was a special occasion.
I particularly love the
choir. It was the ICING
ON THE CAKE! On behalf of everyone from the Over 50s Social
Club, I would like to thank all the volunteers for their hard work in
providing a wonderful lunch.”

Can you spare some time for the elderly
Have YOU thought about volunteering? – Can you spare a few hours to support elderly people in your
community?
Clapham Park Project’s TLC (Time Loving Care) scheme has been running for over 2 years, providing
support for local older and vulnerable people in a similar way to a befriending scheme. We have been
fortunate to have a small number of dedicated volunteers, who have been motivated by their desire to
help in their community.
Mrs Abdullah, 73, has lived at Brixton Hill for 39
years. She lives alone, although she keeps in close
contact with her family, who live far away. She has
osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, balance and
sight problems. She lives on the second floor of a
block with no lifts and uses a walking stick. Initially
she asked the TLC project to help her with posting
letters and doing the shopping, and also writing to the
Management Agents about getting a handrail
installed for the first few steps to the stairs. More
recently, Mrs Abdullah has had an operation for heart
valve replacement and had a pacemaker fitted. She
has limited mobility and needed a lot more assistance
from the TLC project. “I have found the project really
helpful. The workers are always asking about how I
am. They come and help me walk down the stairs,
making sure I get into the transport to take me to the doctors or the social club. They also come back to
take me back up the stairs to the second floor to my flat. The workers also help me get the shopping,
post letters, take my photo and completing the form for renewing my Blue Badge and arrange for
transport to take me to the lunch club. I did not get help from anyone else. If it was not for the TLC
project, I would be housebound! I would not hesitate to recommend the TLC project to anyone else”

Hello to Helen
Helen Boyer has recently joined the
organisation on a part-time basis,
taking over from Carol Lawrence as

resident, a governor at a local school
and had previously volunteered at CPP
for 18 months.
One of the winners of our
computer give away
We were surprised
by the number of
requests we
received for our
reconditioned
computers. After an
initial sift we put the
applications into a
hat and drew out
eight winners. We
hope everyone who
won gets some
benefit from the
PC’s.

local Time Bank
Clapham Park Time Bank has been in existence for the past
8 years, time banking is a way for people from the local
community to volunteer and be rewarded for it in time. This
is achieved by exchanging skills, every person is seen as an
asset, with skills and abilities to share which enables people
to come together to help others and help themselves at the
same time. Every time bank member becomes both giver
and receiver. Everyone’s time is valued equally.
