Dear Parents and Guardians

their goals is to assist families to be as engaged

With that goal in mind, the Council is once again
organizing a Family Evening event, using a small
grant from the provincial government. This year’s
event, “Community Connections”, will take place
on Wednesday 29 April at the school from 6:30
to 8:00 pm. Come together with your child or
children to visit one of the informative booths
from our community partners (e.g. the Health
Unit, Public Library, St. John’s Ambulance, etc.),
enjoy educational activities with Science North,
enjoy some refreshments and possibly win
some prizes!
CHARACTER
RECOGNITION
Claude Garton, along with all other
public schools, is now a depot for
battery recycling. Help to ensure that
batteries do not end up in our landfill
site. Bring all your regular or rechargeable batteries here to be recycled! Merci to the Gr. 4/5 FI class and
Ms Gray who decorated the battery
bin in the foyer. Let’s fill it up!
We look forward to seeing you on the 29th!
Sincerely,
Home and School /
School Council

Voting for the Red Maple and Silver Birch
Reading programs will take place in the library
on April 23/15. Students who have read 5 or
more books in their category are eligible to vote
for their favourite book. Results will be sent to
the Ontario Library Association and the winning books will be announced in May.
Science Fair!
Congratulations to all students who participated in our
school science fair on the 23rd. The quality of the projects was excellent! A special congrats to Holly S., Mia
S., and Micah F. who scored in the top three with the
judges. The Northwestern Regional Science Fair will
take place at Lakehead University on Saturday 25 April.
Claude Garton will be well represented!
The Primary and
Junior divisions
participated in a
mini Winter Carnival on the
12th. Thanks to
Mme Arnone
and Mrs. Carr
for organizing
this, along with
the Gr. 4 and 5
students who
were excellent
leaders!
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
March included the debut of the Claude Garton “Irish Cougars” girls rugby team who participated in their first ever
tournament. A great effort by all team members and a big
thank you to Ms Gray and Mme Sutherland for the coaching efforts! For April, almost 60 students are training for
the Wrestling Tournament on the 23rd, while the Creative
Movement Jamboree practices are beginning for the big
event in May. And we hope to get the spring running program up and running soon. And of course there’s Math
Olympics and the Science Fair—there’s a lot going on!

Everyone week this winter a group of Gr. 7 and 8 students organized Primary Intramurals three
times a week in the gym. Over 90 students in Gr. 1 to 3 took part each week, enjoying activities
such as parachute, obstacle courses, capture the chicken, and even pop the other team’s balloons!
The intermediate students were excellent activity organizers, team leaders, and role models.

FROM THE GR. 2/3 CLASS…
On Friday, March 27 we spent
370 min. without using power in the classroom. The sunlight provided our room with
plenty of heat and light. We
learned in groups, played an environment version of BINGO,
used many math manipulatives
and ended the day with a beautiful story about protecting Mother Earth. Students encouraged
each other to keep going. We
kept track of our time using
math “Link-its”. Each link representing 10 minutes spent “in the
dark”.
