May 2015
Dear Parents and Guardians
Each year, Grade 3 and 6 students write a series
of assessments across Ontario. The “EQAO
tests” are a snapshot of some of the students
learning to date for both the primary and junior
divisions. Starting on 25 May, students at Claude
Garton will take part in these province-wide assessments. Thank you to all teachers for helping
to prepare students for these assessments. More
information will be sent home to Gr. 3 and 6 families shortly. You can also check out eqao.com

CHARACTER
RECOGNITION
For the Day of Pink this year (a day
to talk about homophobia and other
kinds of bullying), the Social Justice
Club challenged all students to wear
pink. The class with the most pink got
to vote for a staff volunteer to have
his or her hair coloured pink for a
day. The winning classes, Ms Hortis’
Gr. 1/2 class and Mme Scott’s Gr. 3/4
FI class, chose Ms Gray! Thanks to
Ms Gray for being such a good sport
and a special thanks to Tammy from
The Strand on Hodder Ave. who donated her time and supplies to give
Ms Gray a new look in front of the
entire school.
Deepak reads for 30 minutes each night before
bed. After 2 weeks, has Deepak read for more
than 6 hours? How do you know?.
Grade 6
Andrew blinks his eyes about 3 times per minute
when he is awake. He is awake approximately 14
hours per day. Does he blink his eyes more than 1
News from the
Library
Voting for the Red Maple and
Silver Birch books, part of the
Forest of Reading, took place
on the 20th in the library. Mrs.
Jessiman explained to students like Alicia, Abbie, and
Alyson how to vote. Thanks to
the Home and School Association for the financial support
to purchase additional copies
of the books so more students
could participate.

Science Fair!
The Claude Garton Science Fair team were excellence ambassadors for our school
at the Regional Science Fair competition on the weekend of the 25th and 26th. All
the students patiently answered questions for both judges and members of the
public. They had great coaching from Mrs. Cross and Mme Valcourt. Three students
were recognized by the judges for outstanding projects. Ellie (right) won the Gold
Medal for the Gr. 4 to 6 division. Micah and Holly (below) took home trophies and
over $400 between them in prizes. Holly and Micah also will be travelling to Fredericton, NB (all expenses paid) to take part in the 2015 Canada Wide Science Fair!
Jump Rope/Hoops for
Heart
We had a dynamic presentation on
the importance of staying active
and taking care of our hearts as
part of our annual Jump Rope and
Hoops for Heart campaign. Thank
you for any donations your child is
able to collect. Our event takes
place on the 15th.
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
It’s been a busy time outside of class time at Claude Garton. As well as
Science Fair and Math Olympics, there was also a Wrestling tournament on the 23rd. Over 55 Claude Garton students , coached by Joseph
P. (former Claude student), Ms Gray, and Mr. Miller, took part—one of
the largest teams at the tournament! A large group has been working
with Mme Smith, Mme Scott, Mme Naysmith, and Mrs. Carr to prepare
for the Creative Movement Jamboree in mid-May. Finally, Mme Roger
and Mrs. Coceancic have been helping our Spring Running Team prepare for the 10 Mile Road Race Relay on Victoria Day.
COMMUNITY
CONNECTIONS
Over 110 people
came out for our
annual family
evening on the
29th. Thanks to
School Council for
organizing this
fun and interactive event!

PLEASE GET INVOLVED
School Council
The next School Council meeting will
take place in mid-June. This committee
advises the school on matters of interest
to the parents and the community. It
assists in developing school priorities
and shaping school policies and procedures. Your input and interest is most
welcome and new members are always
welcome!
Home and School
The Home and School Association supports our students in many, many ways.
If you’re able to help out with upcoming
fundraisers, please contact the school
and we’ll pass along the message.
HEARING LOSS
Hearing loss is an invisible and greatly misunderstood disability even though it affects
one in ten Canadians at some point in their
life.
Common Myths:
that if you are deaf, you cannot speak
if you wear a hearing aid or have a
cochlear implant, you can hear perfectly
if you are deaf, you are not very bright
if you speak, you cannot be deaf.
Children with hearing loss face these types
of assumptions daily; the greatest handicap
for them is ignorance and misunderstanding on the part of the general public.
Our Principal Objectives
1. Provide hope and support to parents
2. Inform that children who are deaf or
hard of hearing can learn to listen and
speak
