I am proud to report that the month of March improved our financial performance over the budgeted amounts and last year's results for the same period. Comparing the first quarter of 2015 to the first quarter of 2014, we are roughly $51,000 better off on a profit/loss basis, and we have cut our cash deficit by approximately $20,000. Operations continue to improve, and our plan seems to be working. Thank you for your continued support of our Club! Now that the proverbial hole in the ship may be at least patched, I’d like to focus on the single most significant issue I think will ensure our long term success. Culture. The way we as members think about our Club, act while at our Club, treat other members and employees, talk about our Club with others outside the Club, and generally regard our Club is of paramount importance to its continued success. I hope each of you believe, as I do, that membership in a private club has value, is a privilege, and comes with certain responsibilities. Please focus on the positive and share happiness with those around you whenever possible. You may think I'm being silly by stating the obvious, but our "business" is having fun, and any detraction from that hurts our "business." Assuming you agree membership is a privilege, I would also ask that you think about that for a moment. As we have asked the membership to accept a higher cost structure to maintain our desired operations as a private club, it becomes more apparent that we as a group are subsidizing a lot of non member activity. Some of this is appropriate and helps support our operations with revenue we wouldn't A Message from the Club President continued from page 2 have otherwise; think weddings, banquets, golf tournaments, etc. Unfortunately we also have a great deal of what could be described as "everyday, normal, member activities" that are participated in by folks who simply don't pay any dues. I certainly realize it is a balancing act and difficult to define exactly what is acceptable, and when a "guest" turns into a "non-dues paying member." This single issue has consumed more discussion, strategic planning, wishing reality were different, denial, confusion, etc., than any other topic whether it be in casual conversations with individual members or in formal committee or board meetings. My point here is simply to ask each member to think about the big picture. I encourage you to invite guests out, enjoy the Club, and encourage those guests to become members. I also ask you to be cognizant of times when those guests look and act a lot more like members who simply have chosen not to pay dues, and we allow them to continue this practice indefinitely. Just to be clear, there is no area of the Club where this is not an issue, but the restaurant suffers the highest frequency. One of the most confusing things in my life is when a resignation letter comes in with the reason stated that a member is leaving being that they "just don't use the Club anymore" then I see them out with their group of friends like nothing ever happened. In any case, please be proud of your membership. Understand that it has a monetary cost that is spread across your fellow members. And please understand that actions and behaviors of our membership effect ALL members and not just your particular group. We have come so far. The Club has had its ups and downs for nearly 90 years now, and it is my opinion that even in the highly changed world we are in now, there is a place for a Club where "membership has its privileges." See you around the Club soon! Jamey HF849 The Ladies Golf Association is proud to announce they are sending $7,000 to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Cleveland Country Club Golf & Greens Scott McArthur, Greens Superintendent The first weekend in April brought us temperatures in the lower 20’s which set us back a couple of weeks. However, it warmed up nicely, and some of the damage from the cold mornings revived in about 2 weeks. The third week in April, when we needed to begin mowing, we received about 6 inches of rain. If the rhyme is true that April showers bring May flowers, then the Club grounds should look like Augusta this month. We have lowered all mowing heights and are almost at our summer heights. Greens are currently being mown at 0.120” and we will lower to 0.110” soon, which is where we keep it during the summer. The tees and fairways’ current height of cut is 0.550” and we will lower to 0.450” for the summer. You really can’t tell a whole lot of difference in heights of cut except for the green speeds. Those speeds will pick up this month when we start spraying Primo, a plant growth regulator, which keeps them from growing upright. This makes the greens smoother, faster and more dense. We are still in the process of removing some trees to eliminate the shade problems that cause the left side of #12 green to thin out. We removed the big tree left of the green to create more sunlight and air, but we also need to take down the small poplar and pine trees directly behind the left side of the green. These two in particular are causing shade in the afternoon which is the most vital sunlight for our MiniVerde greens. Hopefully there will be marked improvement in the health of the green from this tree work by the end of the summer. Another project we plan to begin is putting new pipe across #2 fairway to connect to the new pipe we have added from the edge of #5 fairway and also across #6 and #7. This is the same old pipe that has rusted and caused sink holes on #5, 6, and 7. It is also causing the cart path to erode away on the right side of #2 because there is no bottom to the pipe. This will be a long term fix because we are replacing the old metal pipe with plastic. This will take a week or more as we plan to use the sod to fix places like the left side of the left bunker on #12 now that we have adequate sunlight to grow grass. We will also use it to patch #15 fairway and get it looking good again. We have had plenty of rain and are looking forward to a better summer than last with more sunlight and better growing conditions. The last year of weather has brought many cloudy days with periods of really wet and really dry weather, along with another very cold winter. Hopefully the big fluctuations in weather will stop and give us a chance to give you more consistent playing conditions. Scott McArthur Club Gazette Newsletter • May 2015 • ClevelandCountryClub.net Cleveland Country Club News From the Tennis Hut Happy spring to all! Warm weather has arrived and with it comes visions of tennis players dancing in my head. The time has come to shake off the winter blues, put on your tennis whites and come out to play. The soft courts are finally recovering from the harsh weather and are beginning to look like tennis courts again. I am excited about the possibilities at Cleveland Country Club as summer approaches. The Friday night Mixed Doubles mixer was a great success, and hopefully this will become a monthly event at the Club. Everyone had a great time playing tennis and a great meal on the deck afterwards. Unfortunately the event with the Gardner Webb University Mens Tennis Team had to be cancelled due to rainy weather, but we plan to rescheduled in the fall.
