Abbreviations
This pattern removes a pair of problems often associated with
scarves – they tend to reveal an obvious “front” and “back” side.
Virtually identical on both sides, this scarf is equally attractive
when viewed from either side.
C4L
Cable 4 left: Slip 4 stitches to cable needle, hold to
front, work next 4 stitches in pattern, work 4 sts from
cable needle in pattern.
K
Knit on odd rows, purl on even rows
P
Purl on odd rows, knit on even rows.
Sl-yif
Hold yarn to front and slip stitch as if to purl, then move
yarn to back
St
Stitches (Sts = stitches)
ws
Wrong side (back side) (even numbered rows)
[...]
Repeat instruction as indicated by number immediately
following

Pattern Rows:
Rows 1-5, 7: with A, Slip1 yif (Sl-yif), [k1, p1] 8x, change to B,
[k1, p1] 8x, change to C, [k1, p1] 8x, K1.
1. This is how the row starts:
Row 3: With A., Sl-yif, [K1, p1] 2x, C4L, [K1, p1] 2x, With B [K1,
p1] 2x, C4L, [K1, p1] 2x, with C [K1, p1] 2x, C4L, [K1, p1] 2x,
K1.
Rows 2 and all even rows: with C, Sl-yif, [k1, p1] 8x, change to
B, [k1, p1] 8x, change to A, [k1, p1] 8x, K1.
Nearly Invisible Intarsia:
With normal intarsia, there is usually a “front” side and a “back”
side, where the color changes are more visible on the “back”
side, such as on my LSU Scarf:
2. Knit the first (purple) stitches, ending with a purl stitch,
with Purple in front;
With nearly invisible intarsia (see picture on first page) it is
difficult to determine which is the “front” side or “back side” This
is accomplished by performing the color switch in the ditch
between the purl and knit stitches (a.k.a. “switch in the ditch”).
Here are the detailed steps:

3. Bring Gold yarn to front
5. Return Gold yarn to back
4. Bring Gold yarn UNDER Purple
6. Pull Gold snugly and begin knitting Gold section, leaving
Purple in the front.

7. Continue in like manner with the switch from Gold to
Green. When the row is finished, the Purple and Gold will
both be hanging in the front. When you turn the work to
knit the other direction, the yarns will be in position at the
back to knit the next row.
Scarf Instructions
With A, using long-tail caston, cast on 17 sts, with B cast on 16
sts, with C cast on 17 sts.
Knit Rows 7-8 to set up the bottom edge and move the first
cable crossing further up into the work. Then proceed to knit
Rows 1-8 as many times as needed to provide the length you
desire, approximately 48-54 inches is sufficient for most people.
Bind off after a Row 8.
Finishing
Use cast-on tails to close any gaps between colors at the
starting edge:
8. Subsequent color changes occur on every row, back and
forth. You will need to untangle the yarns after 3-4 rows,
or risk an awful mess later on!
so that it ends more squared, as below:
