Knits men want & 250 pattern possibilities
Over the years, we’ve all knit
garments for the men in our lives
and have all been disappointed
to find our lovingly created
pieces hiding in drawers and
closets. Men aren’t being intentionally cruel; they’re just not
comfortable in knitwear made
with bright colors, itchy yarn, or
flashy designs.
So what’s a knitter to do?
Understand the male psyche,
says knitting instructor Bruce
Weinstein. In Knits Men Want,
he presents ten hilarious essays,
each based on a rule that helps
women knit for men successfully. “Men Are Babies” explains
why guys need to wear soft fabrics. “Men Hate Fittings” de-
scribes how to create a sweater
based on one that’s in his wardrobe. Following each essay is a
timeless master pattern, from
socks, hats, and scarves to an
array of sweaters, all in a range of
sizes (e.g. 40” - 60” chests) and
most written for multiple gauges.

Feature workshop: freeform knit and crochet
Let your inner knitter out! Wouldn't you
like to throw away the pattern and just use
the tools and yarn you have at hand to be
creative? It's time to rebel against gauge,
needle size and recommended yarns and
go "freeform". Learn to make unique
swatches incorporating both your knitting
and crochet skills and how to put all your
shapes together to create a beautiful, one-
of-a kind handbag.
Over three weekly classes, Barb will review basic knit and crochet shapes, review
stitch patterns and teach you some new
ones and give you hands on experience in
combining your knit and crochet stitches.
You will also learn how to assemble your
freeform pieces into projects and in this
case, how to
attach them to
a structured
form and put in
a lining. Barb

When life gives you goats… make cashmere!
Valerie is a new knitter (she just picked up the pointy sticks this August). She wanted to make her
mother-in-law a chemotherapy head scarf in something very, very soft so she chose ArtYarns 1 ply
cashmere. This fine gauge yarn is produced in Italy and hand-dyed in beautiful colourways. Next,
Valerie went looking for a pattern. She couldn’t find one, so in the
spirit of adventure, she modified a dishcloth pattern. It turned out perfect! “My mother-in-law loves it and finds it very comfortable and soft!”
Valerie has shared her “recipe” with us, so if you’d like to make one
too, here it is:
I used a 32 inch circular needle size US 2.
Cast on 4 stitches
Row 1: Knit 4
Row 2: Knit 2, yarn over, knit across the row.
Repeat Row 2 until you have about 230 stitches on the needle.
Last Row: Knit 1, *Knit 2 together, yarn over* (repeat from * to * until 1 stitch remains), Knit 1
Cast off loosely.
Valerie’s handknit
Chemotherapy head scarf
Valerie used her leftover
cashmere to make i-cord
flowers and sewed them
onto the head scarf with beads. You can
embellish yours any way you like.
