Welcome to Campinas A city originally named for its meadows, Campinas was founded in 1774 and lies 16 kilometers south of the University. With a population of nearly one million people, Campinas is today an important and growing educational, industrial and financial center. The city has its own Symphony Orchestra – considered one of Brazil’s best – cinemas, theatres, museums, parks, and fine shopping centers. Restaurants serve a variety of regional and international dishes while pubs or “barzinhos/botecos” are popular meeting places for stimulating conversations and great music. Campinas is also the home of two popular soccer teams: Guarani and Ponte Preta. Recreation in the vicinity of Campinas is also rich and varied. São Paulo, one of the world’s largest cities and an important cultural center, is located 100 kilometers southeast of Campinas – a one-hour ride by car or bus. In addition, many country resorts and parks are accessible, offering a taste of life in the “interior”. Finally, the famous beaches of the coast are only a two-hour drive away. Weather The climate of Campinas is tropical of altitude with annual average temperature of 20,7 ºC. July is considered the coldest month in the year with average temperature of 17,2 ºC (ranging from 11,8 ºC to 25ºC). Usually, July is cold and dry with rare periods of rain. Thus, during the event it is possible that we don’t have a warm period, as it is common in Brazil. Money The Brazilian currency is the REAL (R$) and we suggest that you bring cash with you because exchange offices are not available everywhere and rates are higher at Airports. We also suggest that people bring American Dollars if they want to exchange money. Campinas city lacks of exchange offices once it is not a touristic city. Even compared with other Brazilian universities, the oldest of which was established 70 years ago, Unicamp can be considered a young institution and one that has already developed a strong tradition in education, research and services to society. The project to create Unicamp was a response to the growing demand for qualified personnel in a region of the country - the State of São Paulo - that by the 1960s accounted for 40% of Brazil's industrial capacity and 25% of its economically active population. Unicamp broke with the Brazilian tradition of creating a university by simply accumulating courses and units. Instead, it was created based on an idea that included all of its present structure. This explains why, even before it was established, Unicamp had already attracted more than 200 foreign academics in a wide range of areas and about 180 academics from the best Brazilian universities. Unicamp has three campuses - in Campinas, Piracicaba and Limeira - which are home to 22 teaching and research centers. It also has a vast hospital complex (two large hospitals in Campinas, and one in each of the neighboring towns of Sumaré and Hortolândia); 23 interdisciplinary centers; two technical high schools; and a series of support units within a universe of about 50 thousand people in which thousands of research projects are carried out. Local of the event The “XXXIII UNESCO-SEG-SGA Latin American Metallogeny Course” will be placed in the DGA Auditorium (Diretoria Geral da Administração - UNICAMP). It is located between the rectory of the university and the Institute of Geosciences (see map). The auditorium has a good audio-visual equipment to support the course and can attend to 160 people.
