Welcome 2015 Cycle North Carolina Coastal Ride Participants!
Thank you for registering for the 12th annual Cycle North Carolina Coastal Ride in Washington, North
Carolina! For the second year in a row, we have reached our rider capacity! We are excited and looking
forward to another great weekend of cycling, renewing old friendships and creating new ones.
Below are a few rider stats for the Cycle NC Coastal Ride:
26 States Represented: CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, MD, ME, MI, MO, NC, NJ, NY, OH, PA,
RI, SC, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV and DC. Not to mention our friends from Australia and Canada!
Male/Female Ratio: 53% male / 47% female
Oldest Male/Female Riders: 82 yrs for male / 82 yrs for female
Youngest Male/Female Riders: 9 yrs for Male; 5 yrs for Female
Downtown Washington and the waterfront areas along Stewart Parkway will serve as this year’s main
waterfront campsite for those wishing to tent camp. Additional overflow tent camping is located just a short
distance away at the Haven’s Garden Park area, which is conveniently located across the street from Inner
Banks Outfitters and Backwater Jacks restaurant. The Washington Civic Center will serve as the indoor
campsite. All locations are just a short walk or bike ride away from each other and the many Downtown
restaurants and shops in Washington. RV’s, trailers, pop-up campers and the like will all be assigned to
certain areas around town, providing you with a place to set up for the weekend and socialize with the other
cyclists. If, during the weekend, you need to locate a CNC Staff member, you may call the Headquarters
Phone at 919-724-0299 or locate a CNC Staff Member at Headquarters, which will be at the Washington
Civic Center.
The 2015 Cycle NC Social will be located at the Washington Civic Center from 5:30pm to 7:30pm on
Friday, April 17. All registered participants are invited and encouraged to attend, mingle, enjoy a great free
meal and just hang out. You will be able to wash it all down with a cold beverage and listen to some great
folk music by the Molasses Creek Band! Check them out at www.molasescreek.com.
The Town of Washington and the surrounding counties will offer cyclists scenic biking routes, very minimal
traffic and plenty of flat roads. The great thing about the Cycle NC Coastal Ride is that each day, you
have the option to choose your desired mileage from a variety of routes offered ranging from 5 miles up to
100 miles. Remember, the Cycle NC Coastal Ride is a ride and it’s definitely not a race, so take time to
enjoy the scenic beauty of Washington and Coastal North Carolina.
We would like to thank the Town of Little Washington, the Washington Tourism Development Authority, the
Washington Parks and Recreation Department, the local residents and the many volunteers for making the
2015 Cycle North Carolina Coastal Ride possible. Their dedication and hard work has provided you with
many activities during the CNC Coastal Ride event
Please help us have a safe event. There may be cyclists new to the sport that may not be as experienced
with the rules of the road. Don’t assume other cyclists know what your next move is going to be.
Communicate in a group of riders by shouting “on your left,” “stopping,” etc. to avoid any bike-on-bike
collisions. Try to avoid pace lines as most collisions on events like this occur as a result of bike-onbike contact.
Our ride partners include the North Carolina Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development, Division of
Transportation, Capitol Broadcasting Company, Inc., Powerade and Cycling Spoken Here Bicycle Shop.
Cycle North Carolina is organized by North Carolina Amateur Sports, a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable
organization.
Don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected] or 919-361-1133 if you have questions.
We hope you have a memorable weekend in Little Washington. As always, Cycle Safe!

Preparing for the Ride
For details regarding this section and the 2015 Cycle NC suggested “Packing List,” visit the Cycle NC
website by going to www.ncsports.org and clicking on the Cycle North Carolina Coastal Ride FAQ section.
Packet Pick-up and Check-In
**Please note that there will NOT be check-in and packet pickup on Thursday April 16. However, Cycle NC
participants may arrive Thursday to set up camp no earlier than 3:00pm. Please review the Cycle NC Coastal Ride
site layout included in this packet for camping, parking and locations off limits to camping.**
CHECK-IN & PACKET PICK-UP TIMES AND LOCATIONS
Check-in and packet pick-up will be available in Washington at the Washington Civic Center (110 Gladden Street) beginning the
morning of Friday, April 17. See the schedule below for times and locations:
 Friday, April 17 – 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
 Saturday, April 18 – 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
 Sunday, April 19 – 8:00 am to 10:00 am
At check-in you will receive your rider packet that will include turn by turn cue sheets, Cycle NC
Coastal Ride participant shirt (for full weekend registrants), a CNC ID bracelet, a CNC bicycle band and
additional ride information. Anyone who pre-ordered a 2015 Cycle NC Coastal Ride jersey will receive it
with their rider packet. Enlarged route maps will be available to view at the CNC Headquarters and copies
can be obtained upon request.
Inclement Weather Policy: The Cycle NC Coastal Ride will continue rain or shine. If there is inclement
weather, the 2015 CNC Coastal Ride check-in will still be located at the Washington Civic Center. If
conditions are not safe and routes have to be closed, CNC will send a text message as well as post messages through our social media
outlets (Instagram, Facebook and Twitter). See page 8 for information on the CNC text messaging service as well as the local Weather
Alert Notification System.
Parking for check-in and registration at the Washington Civic Center will be located street side and in the parking lots/spaces along
Stewart Parkway. A map with weekend parking locations will be provided to you at check-in as well as posted to the Cycle NC Coastal
Ride website, located under the “Event Details” section. All RV’s, motorhomes and pull behind camper trailers will be contacted prior to
the ride with instructions, assignments and directions on where to park. If you are looking for areas with full hookups, Tranters Creek
Campground is located just outside of town (3.7 miles) and would be glad to assist you. For more information about Tranters Creek
Campground, visit http://www.tranterscreekresort.com/.
CNC ID Bracelets and Bike Tag
Once a CNC Staff member affixes your CNC ID bracelet, it may not be removed unless you choose
to leave the ride. Until you have checked in and are wearing a wristband, you will not be identified as a
participant and will not have access to cue sheets, course support, campsites, rest stops, showers,
evening activities, special discounts during the weekend, the Friday evening CNC Social, etc.
Wristband checkpoints will be present along the routes so make sure yours is visible. If you see
a rider during the ride not wearing a participant bracelet and using the services that YOU paid for, then
notify a CNC Staff member immediately. Let’s keep the “Ghost Riders” away.
You will also receive a CNC bike band at check-in (similar to your wristband). This tag is to be
affixed on the head tube of your bicycle just under the handle bars. If you are riding a recumbent or
other style of bicycle you will need to affix the tag on your bike so that it is easily visible. This also must
not be removed unless you choose to leave the ride.
CNC Non-Riders
Some riders like to share their Cycle NC Coastal Ride experience with friends and family members
who are not riding. We welcome non-riders and offer them a chance to tag along for the weekend. To
decrease the amount of traffic on the roads, non-riders or support vehicles are not allowed on the
routes. Non-riders must be officially registered, which provides non-riders access to the same amenities as a registered rider, minus the
routes. All non-rider will also be required to wear a wristband during the weekend.
Cycle North Carolina Coastal Ride 2015 | Rider Handbook Vol. 12 5
Volunteers
Cycle North Carolina encourages non-riders to volunteer during the ride. CNC is always looking for enthusiastic volunteers for the
event. Our main need for volunteers is at our Rest Stops along each days routes. If you are interested in volunteering or you know
someone that is willing to volunteer or needs community service hours, please contact the CNC office via email at
[email protected] or click HERE to fill out the online volunteer form.
Campsite Services & Amenities
Campsite Basics
The Cycle North Carolina Coastal Ride offers campsites complete with many
services and amenities that make the stay an enjoyable and comfortable experience.
The Basics
Please be courteous and respect quiet time at all campsites from 10:00 p.m. to
7:00 a.m. If you are a loud sleeper, please be considerate of others and find a secluded
Waterfront Camping
area where you will not disturb the other campers. You should avoid camping near any
CNC vehicles, bike mechanic areas and any stages at camp as they may be noisy/lighted areas at night. Please leave your campsite
clean and respect the properties we are using.
Cycle NC Campsites
Both outdoor and indoor camping is included in the registration fee. The waterfront campsite in Downtown Washington
(Outdoor Camping) has been designated as the main site for tent camping only and is located along W. Stewart Parkway and E. Water
Street. Additional tent camping can be found a few blocks away from downtown Washington at the Haven’s Garden Park (located across
from Inner Banks Outfitters and Back Water Jacks). Participants are responsible for providing their own tent, sleeping bag, pad, etc. as
Cycle North Carolina does not provide camping equipment during the ride. All camping areas (indoor, outdoor, RV’s) are just a short walk
from Downtown Washington, restaurants and shops.
Please camp in designated areas only and do not set up tents in areas marked with “No Camping” signage. All tent areas will be
available beginning 3pm on Thursday, April 16 through 4pm on Sunday, April 19. When setting up your tent, please be aware of your
surroundings as there are irrigation sprinkler heads that we need to protect. Don’t worry, we’ll make sure the sprinklers are turned off!
Parking at the waterfront campsite will be available in designated public parking locations nearby. CNC staff and local volunteers will
be onsite to assist participants with directions on where to park and set up camp. A map indicating parking and camping will be provided
in your rider packet as well as posted on the Coastal Ride website. Portable restrooms will be available at all campsites.
All routes will start and end from the Waterfront Campsite at the intersection of E. Water Street and Bonner Street. Just look (or
listen) for the Cycle NC Start/Finish inflatable arch and flags.
Beginning Friday morning, Cycling Spoken Here mechanics will be set up to assist riders with any mechanical issues they may have.
Cycling Spoken Here mechanics will be located at the Waterfront Campsite and the designated rest stops throughout the weekend.
Indoor camping will be located in the Washington Civic Center (110 Gladden Street). You must provide your own sleeping bag,
pad, ear plugs, etc. If indoor camping space is limited, you may be asked to store your bike outside. Tents are prohibited in the indoor
camping location due to limited space. Indoor camping is first come first served, but in most cases, there will be plenty of room. Please
keep in mind that these are not our facilities and we need to take care of them as much as possible. Please remove your cycling shoes
before entering the indoor facility to prevent damage to the floors. The indoor camping area is available beginning 3pm on Thursday, April
16 to 4pm on Sunday, April 19.
Anyone wishing to spend the weekend living in RV’s, Campers, Truck Trailers, etc., will be contacted prior to the ride on where to
set up. These assigned locations will be available beginning 3pm on Thursday, April 16. Sewer and electrical hookups will not available,
but portable toilets will be provided at the sites. If you are looking for full hookups, you can visit Tranters Creek which is just outside of
town. For more information, visit www.tranterscreek.com.
If you have not done so already, email the following information regarding your
rv/camper to the CNC office at [email protected]. Type of vehicle/unit, Size (ft),
date and approximate time you will be arriving and a photo. This is not a reservation,
but a way to help CNC in determining how much space is required for RV’s, trailers and
truck campers.
Cycle NC Shower Facilities
A shower trailer(s) will be available during the weekend unless there is a State or
National emergency and the shower equipment is required for disaster relief. They will be
centrally located along the waterfront providing easy access from all the camping areas.
The indoor camping area does not have showers, but it’s just a short walk to the waterfront
area. The shower trailer will be available beginning Friday, April 17. The shower trailer will have changing areas and sinks. Please be
courteous and try to keep the showers and bathrooms clean. CNC does not provide towels or toiletries.
Cycle North Carolina Coastal Ride 2015 | Rider Handbook 6
Bike Mechanical Services
Cycling Spoken Here will be our bicycle support crew
during the 2015 CNC Coastal Ride. Certified mechanics will
be at the waterfront campsite and at designated rest stops to
offer you mechanical support to keep your bike running smoothly. Your bike must be tuned up
prior to the ride. You never know what complications might be lurking to prevent you from having
a successful bike ride. All mechanical services are provided to the cyclists at the normal shop
rate. Riders will be responsible for any charges associated with service and parts.
Massage Services
After a long day in the saddle, bring your tired legs down to the Cycle NC Massage area where our therapist will use a variety of
Swedish, deep tissue and sports massage styles to keep you riding happy all weekend. Massages relieve muscle pain and tightness by
stimulating circulation, clearing out the toxins that build up with extreme exertion and stopping spasms before they stop you from riding.
Massages can be tailored to your pressure preferences and to the areas where you need it most.
Therapist, Belinda Clark will be offering massage services for CNC participants throughout the weekend. She will be located at the
Washington Civic Center. Take advantage of this great service to help your body recuperate for the next day’s ride. For information on
massage fees or to sign up for an appointment ahead of time, you can email Belinda at [email protected] or call her
at 828-337-0577.
Washington Local Welcome Tent
The Washington Local Welcome Tent will be located at the Washington Civic Center throughout the weekend. This will be your
main source for extensive information about the community, including planned activities, restaurants, hotels, local history, evening
entertainment options and other valuable information. Look for the Washington Local Welcome Tent at the Washington Civic Center
when checking in during the weekend. Friendly locals will answer questions and provide recommendations for food and entertainment
options. In addition, there will be local staff at the water front campsite to offer quick and convenient access to local information.
Cycle NC Emergencies:
All serious injuries that occur during ride will be handled by the local EMS and hospital services. Call 911 for all emergencies and
provide the physical address along with your exact location at the campsite. The Cycle NC Headquarters will be staffed by a CNC staff
member throughout the weekend. You can call the CNC HQ number (919-724-0299) at any time during ride for assistance if you are not
able to locate a CNC staff member at headquarters.
There will be basic first aid kits in each CNC SAG vehicle along the route and at the CNC Headquarters. If assistance is needed
during the ride, flag down a SAG vehicle. If you are taken in for medical treatment, the CNC Staff will help you locate your family, friends,
bike, luggage, etc., but CNC Staff members are not able to provide you with transportation home. If you require services from a medical
facility, you will be financially responsible. CNC Staff also cannot be responsible for storing.
Cycle NC is a rain or shine event and the event will continue unless conditions are unsafe to continue. If
the event experiences severe weather (thunderstorm, tropical storm, hurricane, tornado, flooding. etc.) the
CNC staff will take action to notify all participants, vendors, volunteers, etc. An air horn will be sounded at the
campsite if we are notified of inclement weather that is approaching the campsite. If you hear an air horn blast,
you must seek shelter in a safe location. Do not stay in your tent if there is potential for lightning, high winds,
flooding, or other dangerous conditions. Trees, limbs, power lines, etc. can fall on tents. We will notify
participants of any dangerous conditions that we are made aware of through; social media (Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram), group text service, email, SAG drivers, route support staff, sounding air horns, and through local
law enforcement. Your first priority must always be to seek shelter in a safe location until dangerous conditions
no longer exist.
If there is an emergency situation that requires you to return to your car, or home during the ride, you will be responsible for your
transportation, additional housing, or any additional expenses related to the situation.
If your family needs to contact you while you are at the Cycle NC Mountains to Coast ride, they may contact/call the CNC
headquarters by dialing 919-724-0299. The headquarters phone number is to be used to contact a rider ONLY in an emergency.
Additional Emergency numbers during the ride will be listed on the event cue sheets and maps.
If you experience or are involved in an accident along the route, there are two statewide emergency numbers:
911 – A statewide emergency number that will contact the local authorities
*HP – A statewide emergency cell phone number to contact the local State Highway Patrol Office
Local emergency number is:
(252) 946-1444 – Washington Police Department OR JUST DIAL 911!

keep the trash out. If trash is mixed in with the recycling materials we cannot dispose of it properly. Do your part and help us reduce our
waste by recycling.

you have a medical issue that we may need to be aware of, please contact the CNC office before

Along the routes…
The Routes
Routes will be open from 9am to 5pm on Friday, 8am to 5pm on Saturday and 8am to 3pm on Sunday. The length of the ride each
day is up to each rider. Ride as long or as short as you want (or not bike at all!). All routes begin and end at the Waterfront Campsite.
Directional signs, SAG (Support And Gear) vans and rest stops will be cleared each day at 5:00 p.m., except for Sunday when routes
close at 3:00 p.m. The routes will be identified with fluorescent orange markings using the Dan Henry route marking system, which is
approved by the League of American Bicyclists. The circles will always be located towards the right hand shoulder of the road. In some
cases when a route turns left, the markings will be located on both sides of the lane. Turns will also be marked with signs posted in the
ground on the side of the road (see images below). We often encounter roads that other cycling clubs use for their rides so be sure to
ignore all other markings other than the ones below. If you choose to ride the Century Option, we will indicate the route length under the
directional road markings when the route turns off of the original route.

Cycle NC Route Support
Cycle North Carolina provides exceptional routes and great course support. The goal of our SAG’s (Support And Gear) is to help
you finish the day’s ride.
Route Hours:
SAG support and rest stops are available only during the route hours (see “The Routes” section above for details). If you leave
before the routes open, or you are still on the route after they have closed, we cannot provide you with support services. All Cycle North
Carolina participants still on the routes after they close will have very limited support and all rest stops and directional signage will be
removed. If you need assistance on the routes, you can call a CNC SAG staff member using the number listed on your cue sheets or you
can call the CNC Headquarters at 919-724-0299.
Rest Stops
The Cycle NC Coastal Ride rest stops are located approximately 10 - 20 miles apart and
feature FREE snacks, drinks, Powerade, water, fresh fruit and more. Most snacks will be
individually pre-packaged for sanitary reasons. We ask that you do not reach for unpackaged
snack items without first removing your cycling gloves (which are most always sweaty) AND
washing your hands. These rest stops are great opportunities for you to get off the bike and
stretch the legs. Never use your hands to get ice from the coolers. Instead, ask one of the rest
stop volunteers.
Select routes will feature pb&j sandwiches, which will be indicated on your cue sheets. There
you will find friendly volunteers preparing these sandwiches for you to refuel during the ride.
Some rest stops may feature organizations that will use this opportunity to fundraise and may
have items at the rest stops for sale or for a donation. CNC encourages participants to help these organizations as much as possible.
However, Cycle NC will still provide the FREE items as described above.
SAG Vans
There will be white, 15 passenger Cycle NC SAG vans on the routes each day.
These SAG vans are available to assist cyclists as needed due to mechanical
problems or minor medical issues. If at any time you need assistance, please signal a
SAG van with a “thumbs down” signal or pat the top of your head. If you do get into a
SAG van, you may be transported directly to the next rest stop and not directly to
camp. The SAG vans will not return to camp until they have a full load.
Cycle NC Coastal Ride Route Distances…
All routes are marked (see above details) on the right side of the road. In addition, the cue sheets located in your rider packet will
provide you with turn by turn directions, distances to the next turn and a total mileage. Some routes may utilize a rest stop more than
once so please pay attention to your Cue Sheets and the road markings when leaving the rest stops. In addition, most routes follow the
same roads but may turn off at different points along the way. Make sure you pay attention to your mileage, the turn signs and the road
markings as your desired route may turn off at a different point than others. Don’t just follow the person in front of you. If you do, you
might end up doing 100 miles instead of 10!
Cycle North Carolina Coastal Ride 2015 | Rider Handbook 9
A tentative route plan is listed below for each day. All routes are subject to change as the CNC Staff will continue to review and adjust
the routes to provide the most scenic and safe roads for the weekend. All routes are loops and they will start and finish at the Waterfront
campsite.
Friday – 5, 12, 19.7, 39 and 54 miles. These routes will head east out of town with rest stops at Goose Creek State Park, Bonner’s Point
in Historic Bath, the small town of Belhaven and Acre Station Meat Farm. These rest stop locations will be a great addition to the routes
as they offer educational opportunities, great scenic views of the coastal waters and great local eating establishments.
Routes open at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m.
Saturday – 5, 12, 19.8, 39, 61, 80, 81 (to Plymouth) and 100 miles. These routes will again head east out of town with rest stops at
Goose Creek State Park, Bonner’s Point in Historic Bath, the small town of Belhaven and Acre Station Meat Farm. An additional stop for
Saturday will include the Roanoke River Lighthouse in downtown Plymouth, NC (located on the Century Option and the 81 mile option).
These rest stop locations will once again offer educational opportunities, great scenic views of the coastal waters and great local eating
establishments.
Routes open at 8 a.m. and close at 5 p.m.
Sunday – 5, 12, 19.8, 26, 33, 45 and 62 mile routes with rest stops at Camp Boddie (the East Carolina Scout Reservation for Boy Scouts)
and the Grimesland Town Park.
Routes open at 8 a.m. and close at 3 p.m.
Cycle North Carolina Safety Pledge…
Cycle NC needs your help to achieve our most important goal of a safe ride. During the
weekend, we are all part of the same bike team/family and we need to look out for each
other and help each other out when one needs it. By agreeing to the Cycle NC release
statement when registering, you also agreed to the following twelve safety rules:
1. Helmets are cool! They protect your noggin so wear them at all times while on your
bike. IT’S REQUIRED!
2. Follow the Law - it's the safest way to ride. Bicyclists have the same rights and duties as
other drivers and need to follow the same traffic laws. Don’t abuse your right to ride or
you could be removed from the ride.
3. If you have to stop at any time on the road, move yourself and your bike completely off
the road.
4. Ride in the right third of the lane if there is not sufficient room for lane sharing. If the road is wide enough, ride just to the right of the
travel lane to remain visible to other motorists.
5. Always yell out “car back” to surrounding riders. This passes the message forward when a vehicle is approaching from behind.
6. Never ride at night or in dense fog except with proper lighting & reflective gear.
7. Supervise children on the ride at all times.
8. Use proper hand signals to indicate your next move.
9. Always use common sense when on your bike.
10. Call out “on your left” to alert a rider when you intend to pass. Never pass on the right.
11. Point out potholes, broken glass and any other hazards to those behind you.

 Some tips on how to avoid dogs when on the route:
o Speed up! This depends on how fresh your legs are.
o Yell at the dog! Yelling NO or DOWN usually works.
o Kick at the dog! This depends on your agility as the dog is nearing your ankle.
o Use dog repellent. Please be careful when using on aggressive dogs.
o Spray them with water or Powerade. An alternative use for your water bottle.
 Apply a waterproof sunscreen on exposed skin several times daily. It should
become a part of your rest stop routine while on the ride.
 Wear padded gloves. Shake out your arms and legs every couple of miles to avoid
soreness.
 Avoid camping under trees as strong winds or storms could cause a tree to fall.
 If high winds or a storm are present, do not stay in your tent. Find shelter until the
storm or winds pass.
 Drink plenty of fluids. At least one bottle an hour. If you are not thirsty, drink anyways! You can become dehydrated without knowing.
 Stretch before and after riding and take plenty of breaks during the day.

 When crossing railroad tracks, do it slowly and at a 90o angle or just get off your bike and walk across. ALWAYS walk your bike
across if the tracks are wet, at an angle, or if traffic prevents you from crossing at a 90o angle.
 Wear a light, brightly colored jacket when riding in the rain. This will help prevent excessive loss of body heat that can result in
Hypothermia. Plus, the brighter the jacket color is, the easier motorists will be able to see you when driving in the rain.
 Have your bike tuned up and inspected before your first day of riding on the tour. Inspect your bike daily during the ride
