Dear Parents, Staff & Students,
Leprechauns from
Mrs. Oakes’ Class!
Spring is just
around
the corner…
...please ensure that
your child comes to
school prepared for
outdoor weather
conditions.
We strongly
recommend an extra
change of clothing for
younger students in
the event of a wet
playground.
Calling home for dry
clothes is an
unnecessary
interruption to student
learning.
So, spring is here...kind of! Many people traveled back from southern destinations over the
March Break and were greeted by two indoor recesses due to cold temperatures. Please be mindful
of the forecast and remind students to dress appropriately.
I am so proud of our school’s commitment to
helping both local and global charities. This is our
10th year supporting Right To Play, an organization
helping to bring the benefits that sport has to offer to
communities that might not otherwise have that
opportunity. We are also this year participating
in supporting another organization called Free the
Children. As part of that initiative, some students led
a fundraising initiative to raise enough money to
buy a goat. We did better than that. Our school
pulled together to raise enough money to buy
10 goats (at right). Three girls from our school
even used savings and chore money to buy two
goats themselves. I am so very inspired by the

CDPS FUN FAIR - HELP WANTED!
Our annual CDPS Fun Fair is set for May 21st and plans
are already underway. Our first committee meeting has already
taken place and we enjoyed a positive response, with new parent
-members taking on important organizing roles. At this time, we
are currently looking for parent volunteers to assist with the
following activities.
Talent Show: This is one of the most popular events. This year
we are looking for two or three parents to look after the
organization and running of the talent show on the evening of
Fun Fair.
Raffle Baskets: This activity is fairly new to the Fun Fair and
has been an extremely successful fundraiser. We need a parent
to coordinate this event and to run it on the evening of Fun Fair.
Due to the number of educational commitments and school
activities at this time of year, parents support is crucial in helping
our Fun Fair continue to run successfully. Those parents interested in
lending their support should call Mrs. Benson at the school.
Our next committee meeting is scheduled for
April 8th at 4 p.m. in the Staff Room.
Gr. 7 Girls’ Basketball
Gr. 7 Boys’ Basketball
On Wednesday, March 11th, our Grade 7 Boys’ played their first
basketball tournament at RCI. As usual, our Cobden boys showed outward acts of determination, leadership, and most importantly, a deep
respect for each other and a natural sense of team comraderie. Our boys
made it to the semi-finals with only 8 players, overcoming injuries and
exhaustion; making our school very, very proud. As a coach, Mrs. Clark
was very honoured and pleased to take these students to the tournament
because of their positive attitude and as usual, Cobden’s reputation for
having students that are consistently well-behaved and respectful. Go

HEAD
LICE!
At any time of the year, head
lice can become a nuisance.
We encourage children not to
share hats, or personal grooming items (brushes, combs, hair
and head bands, etc). We
strongly recommend that
parents check children’s hair
frequently to catch this in its
early stage. Information
regarding head lice treatment,
prevention, facts and myths can
be obtained at local health units
and on many websites.
Our Grade 7 Girls’ Basketball team participated in their tournament at Opeongo on March 6th. Mrs. Broome was proud to be with
this group of girls who represented our school so well both on and off
the court.
We easily defeated the 4 teams in our pool in preliminary play. We
won against St. Thomas with a score of 22-8 and then went on to beat
both McNab 14-4 and one of the RCIS teams 28-8. In an exciting game
against St. Joe’s, the teams both played strong defense but once again
Cobden came out on top with a close 12-11 win.
In the quarter-final round, the girls went up against Walter Zadow
and pulled out another win; 16-8 which sent us on to the semi-finals,
where we would meet the second RCIS team which had several competitive club players.
Despite great defensive play against this experienced team, and lots
of opportunities under the basket, RCIS squeaked by to win 8-4 putting
them into the final against St. James.
Our girls ended the day tired, but not defeated, knowing they had
demonstrated superior passing, re-bounding and defending in all their
games. We should all be proud of the hard work, exceptional skills and
mature attitude displayed by these 10 girls.
Congratulations to Team Members: Jocelyn Smaglinski, Alyssa Misener,
Hilary Dick, Beatrice Herwig, Sydney Broome, Jordan Mitchell,
Katie Belsher, Natasha Kargus, Kaitlyn Bourgeois, Katie Stewart.

Gr. 8 Girls’ Basketball
On Thursday, February 26th the Grade 8 Girls’ Basketball Team travelled to St. Joseph’s
High School to participate in their tournament. The girls met a challenging St. Joe’s Arnprior team in their first game and lost. The CDPS team then defeated A.J. Charbonneau
and RCIS before tying St. Michael’s. The 2-1 record seeded them second and matched
them up against St. Joseph’s Renfrew in the quarter-final round. The team played well all
day and represented Cobden School like the gracious young people they are.
Congratulations to Team Members: Emily Barron, Alyssa Ritchie, Carley May,
Carolyn Wytenburg, Alyssa Vandekemp, Avery Reckzin, Chanelle Knox, Shaylyn Bielaskie,

On Monday, March 2nd the grade 8 students visited Shaw Woods Outdoor Education Centre for a Winter
Forestry Experience! The experience opened our eyes to sustainable forestry practices, hands-on activities, an
active sawmill demonstration and horse logging operation. We also had the opportunity to observe wood branding, learned how to identify native trees in the winter, and enjoyed some hot chocolate and a homemade
sausage rolls around the bonfire.
