NEBRASKA
MUD
(M) 115 mins. USA 2013. Dir: Alexander Payne
Stars: Will Forte, June Squibb, Bob Odenkirk, Bruce Dern
After receiving a sweepstakes letter in the mail, a
cantankerous father thinks he’s struck it rich, and talks his
son into taking a road trip to claim the future. Shot in B&W
across four states. Nebraska tells stories of family life in
the heartland of America, in a touching and deceptively
hilarious way. A most compelling and memorable film.
(M) 130 mins. USA 2013. Dir: Jeff Nichols Stars: Reese
Witherspoon, Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan
Mud is an adventure about two boys, Ellis and his friend
Neckbone, who find a man named Mud hiding out on an
island in the Mississippi. Mud befriends the boys and
eventually talks them into helping him try and track down a
former lover, who lives in town. It is a modern day
Huckleberry Finn tale with fantastic cinematography.
HER
KILL YOUR DARLINGS
(MA) 126 mins. USA 2013. Dir: Spike Jonze
Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson
Set in the Los Angeles of the near future, Theodore works
for beautifulhandwrittenletters.com crafting other people’s
correspondence. Solitary Ted acquires a new computer
operating system that leads him into unprecedented
intimacy. ‘Samantha’ (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) soon
becomes an essential, intimate part of his life.
(MA) 103 mins. USA 2013. Dir: John Krokidas
Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Michael C. Hall
Kill Your Darlings is a powerful drama as we watch an
inevitable tragedy unfold. The title is a clever play on words
as a real murder will infect the lives of a close circle of
friends of poet Alan Ginsberg, played by Daniel Radcliffe,
during the early period of the 50s Beat Generation at
Columbia University.
MARY MEETS MOHAMMAD
Single Feature plus selected shorts - includes supper
(PG) 80 mins. Aust. 2013. Dir: Heather Kirkpatrick Stars: Mary and Mohammad
Mary Meets Mohammad is a remarkable documentary film that asks us to look inward at our own humanity: to knock down
our own misconceived barriers of race, religion, age and difference to rediscover the true meaning of community. The film is
at times distressing yet heartening; watching the relationship between Mohammad an asylum seeker and Mary a retireeaged woman and member of the Bridgewater knitting club (Tasmania) is endearing.
TRACKS
LE WEEKEND
(M) 113 mins. Aust. 2013. Dir: John Curran Stars: Mia
Wasikowska, Adam Driver, Emma Booth, Jessica Tovey
One day in the mid-1970s, Robyn Davidson arrived in Alice
Springs with an unlikely plan to acquire some wild camels,
train them to serve as beasts of burden, and head out on
foot 3,000 kms across the Central Desert to the Indian
Ocean. The Australian outback is superbly photographed
and the camels are wonderfully cranky.
(M) 93 mins. UK. 2013. Dir: Roger Michell
Stars: Lindsay Duncan, Jeff Goldblum, Jim Broadbent
English couple, diffident and wistful Nick and demanding
and take-charge Meg, are heading to Paris to relive their
honeymoon of 30 years earlier in hopes of rekindling their
relationship. But there’s much irritation and
discontentment between them. Relief of sorts is at hand in
the shape of Morgan, Nick’s former colleague.
IN THE FOLDS OF HILLS

Fraser, essay by photographer and writer Robert McFarlane. The launch will be followed by a feature documentary by ‘Cedar

DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
NIGHT TRAIN TO LISBON
(MA) 117 mins. USA 2013. Dir: Jean-Marc Vallée
Stars: Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey
A man infected with AIDS defies corrupt FDA treatment to
procure non-approved medicine that makes him and other
AIDS patients actually get better. This film is multi layered,
deeply emotional and highly entertaining. McConaughey
delivers an excellent performance as Ron, a despicable
man who slowly turns into a caring likable person.
(M) 111 mins. Portugal 2013. Dir: Bille August
Stars: Jeremy Irons, Mélanie Laurent, Jack Huston
A Swiss professor saves the life of a girl who wanted to

author after discovering it in the pocket of the girl, by
embarking on an intellectual adventure to Portugal. Instead
he ends up being taken on a journey of self-discovery.
WADJDA
GONE
(PG) 97 mins. Saudi Arabia 2012. Dir: Haifaa al-Mansour
Stars: Reem Abdullah, Waad Mohammed
This first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia is the
story of a young girl determined to raise enough money to
buy a bike in a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a
girl’s virtue. In a country where cinemas are banned and
women cannot drive or vote, writer–director Haifaa al–
Mansour has broken many barriers with this film.
(PG-13) 95 mins. USA 2012. Dir: Heitor Dhalia
Stars: Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Carpenter, Wes Bentley
A suspenseful psychological thriller, Gone is set in rainy
Portland, Oregon. After supposedly escaping from a
kidnapper, Jill is convinced the abductor has returned. Now
she claims the possible serial killer has taken her sister,
but with no signs of a struggle, police are hesitant to
believe her wild tale.

ALL IS LOST
ANNA KARENINA
(M) 106 mins. USA 2014. Dir: J C Chandor
Stars: Robert Redford
An exceptional, near–masterpiece of a movie detailing the
struggles of an old sailor and his efforts to survive after his
yacht is severely damaged by a shipping container in rough
storms. Redford displays his talents and you are in the
journey for survival with him from start to finish.
(M) 130 mins. UK 2013. Dir: Joe Wright
Stars: Jude Law, Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen
Joe Wright’s energetic adaptation of Tolstoy’s classic 1877
romance is a bold, visually stylized work. The story
powerfully explores the capacity for love, that surges
through the human heart.
As Anna questions her
happiness and marriage, change comes to all around her.

THE PAST
THE GATEKEEPERS
(M) 130 Mins. France 2013. Dir: Asghar Farhadi
Stars: Ali Mosaffa, Bérénice Bejo, Tahar Rahim
An Iranian man reunites with his estranged wife in Paris to
finalize their divorce, which is soon complicated by a
shocking revelation by her daughter from a previous
marriage. The Past has an excellent script – the characters
are truly convincing and their dilemmas are credible.
Farhadi maintains a balance between drama and realism.
(M) 101 mins. Israel 2013. Dir: Dror Moreh
Stars: Ami Ayalon, Avi Dichter, Yuval Diskin
This is a candid style of documentary that interviews all the
surviving former heads of Shin Bet, the Israeli security
agency. The level of honesty was unexpected, the sincerity
of regret was a surprise and the overall message that Shin
Bet didn’t work was a real revelation. The film bravely puts
focus on Israel’s behaviour as an occupying power.
