FASHION Staying fashionable this winter Cold, snow and frosty streets – it’s not that easy to dress warmly in the winter and remain looking great. It’s a good thing that this year’s winter season has a lot of fashionable trends on offer. Cocoon-style coats are comfortably oversized, wool and leather are all the rage, and metallics and bright colours help to brighten up pale winter skin. This is how to survive the cold season in style. With current winter fashion you can get warm and fashionale through the cold season. Winter fashion gets cosy Romance meets rock ‘n’ roll: metallic tones on pure white and leather with winter woollies. One thing is for sure: winter fashion in 2013/14 will be exciting and full of contrast. The most important thing is that fashionable garments are cosy! Instead of having to walk through the city in high heels and a very hip outfit that is much too flimsy, the dreams of all fashion fans have come true as this season offers fashionable clothes and soft, comfortably warm materials. Trends such as the oversized coat, outfits made of velvet and wool, and sturdy biker boots look great and also fend off the frost. At New York Fashion Week, fashion shows in Paris, Milan’s runways and Fashion Week in London alike, key fashion designers such as Wolfgang Joop, Hedi Slimane, Dries van Noten, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta and Donna Karan presented their new collections before the beginning of the autumn/winter season. Berlin Fashion Week is also growing in importance in the fashion world. Buyers, fashion experts, media representatives and stars gather at fashion shows on a regular basis to see the newest trends and the designers’ creations, seeking inspiration for the cold months ahead. Models at New York Fashion Week show the latest trends such as the metallic look and warm winter fabrics. 1 A season of contrasts So what’s fashionable this winter? According to designer Wolfgang Joop, who analyses the latest trends for Galeria Kaufhof, contrasts are in. Combining rock ‘n’ roll and romance reflects a feminine touch with a self-confident, mysterious edge. The base is plain black with contrasting accents in a soft shade such as bordeaux. Grunge remains hip – Yves-SaintLaurent designer Hedi Slimane presented a sought-after “I don’t give a damn” look combining a checked flannel shirt with ripped jeans, a heavy leather jacket and biker boots at his Paris show. Style-conscious women will opt for the masculine “dandy” look this winter, a look that also presents a feminine side. The focus here is again on contrasts: big suits, a hat and bow tie, smartened up with narrow shoes, bling and the latest bag made of patent leather or leather, with chain detailing or a striking quilted look and angular shapes. Fashion show-stopper Trend-setters are focussing on the big entrance this season – opulence is the name of the game. Brocade, embroidery and gold details create a majestic look. Models for Dolce & Gabbana wore opulent fabrics and statement jewellery, and moved with royal grace. The fashionable ultra-wide-leg trousers will also attract attention. Oversized trousers, such as those from Dries van Noten, are stylishly combined with voluminous biker jackets or an embroidered blouson. Trend researchers such as New York’s Faith Popcorn have recognised a growing desire in society for protection; people want to wrap themselves in a cocoon.. The cocooning trend has been transferred to the market by designers such as Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta and Donna Karan in the form of padded jackets and blazers, oversized lengths, soft materials and rounded shoulders. As a result, coats are a fashion statement this winter, too. Oversized coats are trendy and really comfortable when the weather gets cold. Bright colours perfect the look. 2 Voluminous coats are part of the cocooning trend. Trousers, dresses, accessories This season, the mix of styles has also spread to trousers, with varying fabrics, prints and refined details. Chintz fabrics, creating a matte finish, make a particularly refined impression according to Wolfgang Joop. Other favourites of his include velvet trousers in bordeaux or in a paisley pattern. Other fashionable trends include mini dresses, such as those from Missoni or Balmain. Ultrashort dresses with long arms put long legs on show for those brave enough to wear them. Combining those with boots boosts the impact. The most important accessory remains the bag, and there are a number of hip models around at the moment. Eye-candy clutches are characterised by striking designs such as Warhol prints from Dior or unusual materials such as terry cloth from Proenza Schouler. But classic handbags in bright colours or satchels with extra-wide straps are also in. Eyecatching jewellery including statement necklaces, sparkly earrings or lots of rings on your fingers complete the look. This winter, combine a pure white look with an eye-candy clutch, featured here in fiery red. Fabric, leather and knits Anyone who knows how to combine materials is fashionable. The power pairing of the upcoming season is leather and wool. Leather appliqués are stitched onto knitted jumpers and convey a certain biker look. Inspiration is provided by labels such as Belstaff and Proenza Schouler. And designer Wolfgang Joop also proclaims fabric contrast. “A black jacket or coat is always a statement, particularly when implementing the current mix of materials and new cut. Leather as soft as jersey, jersey as cool as leather – everything has a new feel,” according to the style expert. Velvet is in this winter, too. Whether it’s in details like 3 Burberry Prorsum or a complete look from Carolina Herrera – the material is always elegant and feminine. According to Joop, cashmere is hip again. The luxurious material bewitches fashion fans in bright colours this season. “Colour blocking remains ultra-chic,” says the designer. A fashionable winter with contrasting materials and patterns: Checked and plain colours, and leather with wool and knits. Bright colours Tangerine is a shade of reddish-orange with a touch of pink and it has taken runways by storm. It is particularly striking when combined with muted colours such as black or continued bright colours in the whole outfit. Those brave enough could try colour blocking like Lala Berlin with pink, red and orange. The official colour trend for 2013 is emerald green. Clothes, accessories and nail varnish – the bright green shade can be found everywhere this winter season. Wolfgang Joop recommends combining it with black. Another colour trend this season is shiny, metallic shades. They can be used for an entire outfit or used as an eye-catcher. Contrast is provided by cuddly winter materials. You could combine a sparkly gold leather skirt with a light-coloured sweatshirt, a knitted jumper or an oversized shirt and masculine boots – and the glitzy, exciting look is complete. The official colour trend of the season is emerald green. 4 Fashion and street-style blogs Besides the classic fashion shows of famous designers, new fashion trends are also influenced by social media. Fashion blogs are stirring up the fashion world: bloggers such as Russian fashion journalist Miroslava Duma and Hanneli Mustaparta are becoming style icons. Blogger Caroline Blomst, who presents her outfits at carolinesmode.com, recently set up her own fashion label called “Caroline Blomst”. Street styles are also hip. Trend scouts search the streets of Berlin, Barcelona and Stockholm, to name just a few, looking for the best looks, then photographing them for blogs and fashion magazines. The award-winning OTTO fashion blog, “Two for Fashion,” is one example of such research. Therefore, virtual runways also help you stay up to date. When it comes to hats, fashion fans are grabbing their crochet kits themselves this season. As Focus magazine reported in October 2013, the “myboshi” book is currently at the top of the bestseller list of how-to guides. And it’s interesting to see that both of the authors are men – and successful businessmen at that. Thomas Jaenisch und Felix Rohland are the founders of the new, trendy hat label. The trend towards brightly striped crocheted hats wasn’t created by fashion designers for the cold season. Just like the Ugg boots lined with lamb’s wool, which were first worn by surfers on beaches in Australia and New Zealand, the brightly striped hats were made popular by fun sports fans, such as skateboarders. And one thing is certain: crocheting a hat is also a great way to spend a cold winter’s evening. . Success based on DIY crochet hats: “myboshi” founders Thomas Jaenisch (left) and Felix Rohland.
