The classic ballet flat has become a fashion
MUST for many a fashionista and Sambag’s
Director and designer, Sam Wagner, tells us
about her inspirations and fashion tips.
A
trip to the fashion capital of
New York was the inspiration
behind designer Sam Wagner’s
decision to launch the innovative label,
Sambag, which started out with a
range of fabric bags sold at Sydney’s
Paddington markets.
Sam developed a strong affiliation
with fashion from the early age of
15 years, working in retail, wholesale
and design departments. Living in
London in the early ‘90s, Sam further
sharpened her skills, undertaking
studies at a London fashion college.
The ‘big break’ that took her from the
markets to a fully fledged label came
after exhibiting at the early shows of
fashion week, which she says were
full of excitement back in the late ‘90s
and much more of a fashion exhibit.
Wagner’s love of the “classic look” of
ballet flats, worn by the iconic Audrey
Hepburn, was a focus from early on.
The success of the Sambag ballet flat,
which are made from quality Italian
leathers, has definitely strengthened
the brand along the way.
Her style is distinctive and she says
she gains her inspiration for her design
aesthetic “everywhere”.

Sambag launches around 240 different
shoe options each season and with a
wardrobe jam-packed with shoes the
designer personally owns hundreds
herself, which she changes from
season to season.
Sam’s advice for any woman looking
to invest in classic items this winter?
“A good pair of staple ballets in a few
colours as they can go with so many
outfits, a pair of Sambag’s leather
leggings as they are so comfortable
and a great cashmere sweater”.

q: how did the designer archives concept
come about?
A: We started selling our own pieces online and
soon enough we started doing consignment as
a part-time business. Designer Archives gives
fashion enthusiasts a second chance to own that
must-have or sold out piece. We also make highend designer labels accessible. We have a pair of
Valentino heels for $40, right up to a $3,850 Chanel
handbag, so there’s something for every budget.
q: Where do you source your celebrity pieces?
A: We source our celebrity items from stylists,
charity auctions, movie lot auctions, collectors
and consignors. We’ve had pieces owned by the
Kardashian sisters, an emerald sequin Alice & Olivia
dress Megan Fox was photographed in, a Prada
handbag carried by Meryl Streep in the opening
scenes of the Devil Wears Prada and a crystal Alice
& Olivia sweater worn on Gossip Girl by Kaylee
DeFer who plays Ivy Dickens.
q: tell us about your favourite pieces to
come through the doors?
A: We’re excited about the Limited Edition 2004
Tweed Chanel Flap Bag we have in store. Its design
commemorates the New york 57th Street Chanel
Store re-opening. A past favourite was a burgundy
Gucci gown used for their Fall 2006 ad campaigns.

together, the dynamic duo from Dinosaur
Designs show no signs of slowing down
and share their excitement about
finally opening a store in Brisbane.
L
ouise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy first met in 1983 at art
school in Sydney when they were grouped in the same
class as a result of their surnames starting with the same
letter. The pair are highly esteemed in the Australian design
scene and are known globally for their original, handmade
craftmanship in resin and their unique design processes.

They work closely together in all aspects of these design
processes and both share a passion and love for their craft
which helps keep their ideas fresh after nearly three decades in
business. This passion is reflected in their constantly evolving
range of handmade resin jewellery, for which they are most
famous, as well as resin homewares and sterling silver jewellery,
all of which are manufactured in Australia.
The opening of the Wintergarden store came about after the pair
had been looking in Brisbane for the right space and location for
a very long time. “We have a lot of loyal fans and customers in
Brisbane and are excited to finally be able to offer somewhere
local for them to shop and experience our designs.”
A recent commission to create six huge platters for an exhibition
at Brisbane’s GOMA is one of their many career highlights,
alongside working with international brands such as Louis
Vuitton and Paul Smith, and having their jewellery worn by
celebrities including Kate Winslett and Alicia Keys.

ideas fresh after so many

“Opening our store in New York recently
has also been a huge milestone for us.”
“It was time to take the company to the next level and focus on
building it internationally. New York has a lot to offer as a global
power city; it is central to the design and fashion world, both of
which are categories Dinosaur Designs fits into.”
The future looks bright for these two who are currently working
on launching a US online store as well as working on their next
collection which is due to launch in November.
