Tips/Tricks for Machine Knitters (1 hr class both days). Learn all the little secrets to make knitting life easier and better. Find
out how to cast on in pattern. Join a new cone skein of yarn or a new color without a loose old and new stitch. See ways of
attaching buttons as you work. View the absolute best buttonholes. Work the smoothest short rows with no lumps or bumps.
Create invisible circular bind offs on circular knitting where the beginning and end are absolutely imperceptible. Weave in
those little ends that are too short to put through a darning needle. Take away lots of small “fix-its” and improve those details.
Draping Demonstration (2 hr class both days). One of the more advanced ways of drafting a pattern is to drape commercial
fabric directly onto the body. This ensures better fit and allows more creative shaping and construction. See the process at
work as Lily will drape at least 2 different types of garments onto volunteers. If you wish to be one of the volunteers in having
this custom-made pattern made for you, there will be a $10 materials fee.
Design Inspiration (2 hr class both days). Have you ever wondered where ideas come from? Where do designers draw their
inspiration from? How do they interpret their ideas into reality? What problems arise? What challenges are posed? What
details do they specifically look for? What special tools are involved? See the many examples of source and result in this showand-tell lecture.

Spiral Hat (1 hr class both days) - Learn the technique of making a garter stitch swirl hand with or without the garter bar.
Baby Surprise Sweater (1 hr class both days) - The machine knit version of the classic from Elizabeth Zimmerman. Techniques that will be taught will be short rowing and garment finishing.
Beaded Bag (1 hr class both days) - Something very unusual for machine knitters is Uyvonne’s popular beaded bag. Demonstrated technique for knitting beads on the knitting machine. Also, see how to attach the beaded fabric to the purse frames.
Lace Scarf (1 hr class both days) - Using hand transfer lace, Uyvonne will demonstrate how to read lace charts to produce
wonderful lace scarves.
Socks (1 hr class both days) - Machine knitters can make socks with invisible seams on the main bed. This technique is simple
and effective for making socks that defy seam detection.

DesignaKnit 8! What’s New, What’s Required – DEMO, No Experience Required. (1 hr class both days)
DesignaKnit 8 has been released and is creating a buzz among hand knitters, but there’s a lot new for machine knitters, too!
Its several new features make stitch pattern creation more enjoyable, linking stitch patterns to garment shapes a snap, switching
between hand and machine knitting quick, and connecting to your favorite knitting machine easier than ever. Learn about
what’s new and must-have to get the most out of this comprehensive software for machine knitting. This is an intro, not a
hands-on class.

Creating knitting stitch patterns in DesignaKnit 8 is almost as addictive as machine knitting itself! Explore the steps to create and save your work, and then alter it to personalize it to a given project or garment shape. This is a hands-on class and
emphasis will be given to those with DesignaKnit 8’s most current version loaded onto their laptops. (Workshop, bring your
laptop, be sure you update DesignaKnit 8 before seminar, limited space. No support for DesignaKnit 7 will be provided. )

Incorporating cable stitch patterns in DesignaKnit8 is extremely easy! Explore the Cable Stitch Library, add cables to your
stitch patterns and view their making instructions in interactive knitting mode. This is a hands-on class and emphasis will be
given to those with DesignaKnit8’s most current version loaded onto their laptops. (Workshop, bring your laptop, be sure you

Whether you’ve come from a Standard Garment Design or are creating a shape from scratch, DesignaKnit8 offers some very
interesting features to make your shape pattern as precise as possible. From Exact Stitch Layout, new in version 8, to previewing stitch design with shape, we’ll go over the steps to working up your next design! There’s something great about DesignaKnit8! It’s the complete program for the machine or hand knitter that interactively
directs your knitting activity, integrates original stitch patterns with the shapes you want to knit, supplies excellent video tutorials, and produces understandable line-by-line text knitting instructions and charts of your work. From getting connected,
and updated, to knitting interactively, we’ll look to the features that bring you smoothly from one area to another, from stitch
creation to original pattern drafting to interactive knitting. This is a hands-on class, and will be devoted to supporting those

Short Rows I – The technique of Short Rowing is not just for shoulders or hem shaping. Linda will expand your imagination
demonstrating this technique in several ways to create beautiful tops (with or without sleeves), stretchable market bags and
trendy hats and scarves.
Short Rows II – Continuing to explore imaginative ways to use the short rowing technique, Linda will give you the recipe for
a “one skein wonder” scarf that is HOT, HOT, HOT right now. Also, not just for shaping, she will demonstrate other innovative uses of short rowing in circular ponchos, jester hats, wrap around capes and fun animal hats for kids and adults (you will
love the MONKEY HAT!).
Fun & Easy I – Who said knitter’s only knit? This class will show you how to drape a jacket, starting with an easy knitted
rectangle of fabric, finish with an elegant yet easy knit nightgown and create crocheted necklaces with leftover yarn scraps and
beads. Use up all your beautiful scrap yarn to make matching necklace accessories for your sweaters.
Fun & Easy II – Learn to do ruffles the easy way. Knit on a ruffle or a band as a clean finish to make your garment fashionable. Then, she will demonstrate how to do lace on the Bulky machine with the use of a punchcard. You can use all your lace
cards to make beautiful designs in scarves or bags (lined or unlined). Expand your bulky machine’s capability without the need
of a lace carriage!
Textile Lab – You don’t need a Master of Science degree in Textile Technology to find out what the fiber content and characteristics are in a mystery skein of yarn. Linda will show you how to determine what fibers you are working with using simple
chemical and burn tests that you can do at home. She will be doing live testing with “mystery” yarns to determine content and
from there, her new pamphlet, Basic Textile Analysis for the Fiber Artist, will point you to the answers.

Necklines Made Easy: teach yourself how easy it is to make various types of neckline that work every time. Choose any neckline from keyhole or draped to boatneck, round and square and do them without any trauma. They are easy one step at a time
and I’ll show you how to do them to make your garments unique and stylish

Knit Flowers: Make your own bouquets of roses or daffodils or many other flowers to match and enhance your decor. These
are easily done out of scraps of yarn with floral tape and wires. These flowers can be used for table decorations or worn on a
garment, belt or hat and use easy techniques.
Irish tuck sweaters: for the ‘real’ Irish look without transferring any cables unless you want to. This class will be talking about
the preferred style for this Irish garment with an easy diagram to follow. You can use punch card or electronic machines to knit
these sweaters
Designing and knitting fairisle sweaters: the ‘look’ this Fall is Nordic. Come and learn how to research and make your own
designs. Use the techniques that Dale of Norway uses to finish shoulders and make trims. Become an advertisement for your
knitting skills by wearing your own Nordic sweaters, tunics, or vests. Unique hems, trims, and buttonhole treatments to finish
your garments beautifully. The methods of shaping including traditional and Cut and Sew, will be covered.
Knitting for dolls: The idea behind writing these patterns was to teach knitting techniques like lace, fairisle and felting the
easy way. This was done by having you make many different types of garments that wouldn’t take much time, yarn or effort to
learn techniques that could be used in larger garments too.
Correcting Errors In Your Finished Garments: Anything can be corrected perfectly, including the terrible errors like cables
that cross the wrong direction, and Fairisle that went wrong. In fact ANYTHING can be corrected perfectly with a little additional hand work. Come and learn the types of hand work necessary to correct the errors we make while knitting.
Knitting NON Traditional Scandinavian garments: Using 24 stitch motifs to design your own sweaters, tunics, and vests.
Unique hems, trims, and buttonhole treatments to finish your garments beautifully. Exploring aspects of pattern and design
in both traditional and modern color combinations. All methods of shaping including traditional and Cut and Sew, will be
covered. These techniques can be used on any machine with patterning ability.
Taming the Cotton Yarn Beast! Knit with the beautiful cotton yarns now available to home knitters. Make cotton yarns do
what you want them to: NO twisting, biasing, or sagging and bagging. New hem treatments that really do work with this fiber.
Make garments using different techniques to make this wonderful fiber easier to use. Using cotton in combination with other
yarns.
