Once you (the designer) have established sizing and grading
standards, the next step toward productivity in grading is to create
detailed, re-useable spreadsheets. Jeane DeCoster has created what
she calls “Magic spreadsheets”. Jill Wolcott will help you see how
you can make them work for you. They aren’t really magic, but the
process of creating a well-written and documented spreadsheet
with flexible formulas does seem magical when you change a few
numbers in one part and, Voila! Everything else changes! It would
be impossible to create a single spreadsheet that could be re-used
for every garment design, but this is a big step-along-the-way! You
will learn how to build a simple, sleeveless vest template that can
use up to 2 stitch patterns in the same garment. We will provide a
template, but you will learn by creating your own – using a series
of formulas uniquely suited to knitting/crochet patterns. You’ll also
learn how built-in error checking will help keep your tech editing
costs down. To make it possible to build another spreadsheet based
on the class template, we’ll teach you how to build one for your
unique projects. Students should bring: a computer loaded with
Excel or equivalent spreadsheet program. Material Fee: $25
Please pay instructor onsite. Correct change appreciated. Class
Max: 22
Technical writing - communicating how to do a complex task using
a specialized vocabulary - is at the heart of a knitwear designer’s
(or teacher’s) job. Being able to write a clear and concise pattern
is key to being both successful and productive. Technical editors
must be adept at not only understanding the math of a pattern,
but also at helping the designer present the information in the
best possible way for an intended audience. In Technical Writing &
Editing, we will cover: * Identifying the audience * Developing and
working with style sheets * Developing and working with pattern
templates * Developing a glossary of terms * Handling specific
wording challenges * Working with (or working as) a technical editor
* Understanding the basics of information presentation * Writing
crochet patterns (if there are students interested - if possible I
would like to know this before class starts). There will be time for
discussion of the pros and cons of certain wording choices, and
for students to learn from each other. The students will leave class
with a style sheet adapted for their audiences, a knit and a crochet
pattern template, and a method for efficiently writing knitting and
crochet patterns. There will be homework overnight, probably to
include writing a pattern using the numbers and pattern template
provided. Students should bring: Laptop with word processing
program and charged battery, pencil and paper for note-taking,
calculator (optional). Material Fee: $5 Please pay instructor
onsite. Correct change appreciated. Class Max: 30

Learn to get outstanding color pattern effects using a rigid heddle
loom. Make your weaving look like complicated patterns with very
little effort. If you are already familiar with the rigid heddle loom, this
class will help you master more advanced techniques. If you are a
relatively new weaver, the technique is not too difficult to learn. This
type of weaving is portable, easy and fun and can add variety to your
fiber abilities. Students should bring: scissors, tape measure,
pins, 2 paper grocery bags, tube from inside a paper towel roll
Material Fee: $5 Please pay instructor onsite. Correct change

In any class I teach, I always find myself spontaneously adding
various useful techniques from my rather large bag of tricks. I’ve
gotten used to hearing knitters say, “this one thing is worth the price
of the workshop!” This class combines mini-tutorials on 7 of my
most appreciated techniques with a 1-skein project which you can
turn into a class for your customers, and make them proud of their
new-found ability to finesse their knitting. Students should bring:
the usual small bag of knitting paraphernalia and a 24-inch
circular needle in size 11 (or, if you are a loose knitter, in size
10.5, or if you are a tight knitter, in size 13). Class Max: 26

If you want to sell what is on the shelves, your shop needs to be
comfortable with yarn substitutions and gauge alterations. Shops
that can easily customize a commercial pattern sell more of what
is already in stock – it just takes a bit of practice. Gain insights on
working with swatches, learn methods to simplify the math and
practice working through a pattern rewrite based on a new yarn.
Students should bring: homework swatch, yarn label from yarn
used in the swatch, commercial pattern to rework in the new
yarn, ruler, calculator and pencil. Class Max: 35
Lucious fruits look fresh and inviting through the sparkle of
wonderous threads and beautiful beads and sequins on this 8”x10.5"
18 ct canvas by Sundance Designs. Sandy will lead you though
creating dimension by adding felt padding and coverings with beads
and sequins. Airy stitching is created to let the beautiful painting
show through as well on some of the fruits as the playful Sparkles
worm travels across to his destination. A whole world abounds atop
the lovely needle felted turban. The classy skull is stitched with
and accented with sparkly threads. Stumpwork techniques will
add dimension to this wonderful character – buttonhole stitches;
needleweaving; ruching; when will it stop? Students should bring:
set of 8" and 10" stretcher bars; laying tool; normal stitching
supplies. Material Fee: $10 Please pay instructor onsite. Correct

your previous knit and crochet experience so that you can become
comfortable teaching the technique. Learn the basics, how to match
hook sizes with various weights of yarn, how to plan and prepare
classes, and how to work the project on the cover of Get Hooked on

an actual washing machine, I have a method that requires no
plumbing). I’ll teach you to add new elements to create the more
complex Bootstrap Felfs, Cowboy Boot Felfs, Color-Play Felfs, Elfin
Felfen, and Jewel Felfs, and how to embellish with needle-felting,
embroidery, or beads (including holiday ideas so you can repeat this
class year-round). Before you know it, Felfs will be marching around

If you look up the definition of BRIOCHE, the dictionaries will tell you

difference between the two techniques ... is there one? How do you

Are you ready to try? Let’s venture into this cozy layered texture
together; tips and practice will make these a great addition to your
technical library! Students should bring: 4 balls of different

In this workshop, I’ll present the
basics of color theory geared toward knitters, focusing on how
to apply five types of contrast to choosing and combining yarns
for a multicolored project. The Albers Cowl will be the class
project, because it uses anywhere from four to eleven colors. In
addition to the basics of color theory, I’ll discuss how to apply
these color theory principles when helping knitters select colors
for a multicolor project like the Albers Cowl (and any striped and
stranded projects that use small amounts of multiple colors). I’ll
cover how to encourage knitters to purchase yarns to complement
stash yarns, how to successfully combine yarn brands and bases
available in your shop, and how to give knitters the confidence
to select a color combination they will LOVE! Students should
bring: center square created as homework, at least 50 yards
of one color of fingering-weight yarn in addition to the color
in which the center square is knit (the more colors you bring,
the better!) US size 2 needles. Material Fee: $12 Please pay
instructor onsite. Correct change appreciated. Class Max: 30
Content marketing is an incredible method of marketing to your
audience without selling to them directly. By creating and curating
valuable content that entertains and informs, you can develop trust
and authority with your customers that will lead to sales. Major
brands like Sharpie, P&G, and Microsoft use content marketing
to build their audience, and you can too. In this class you will
learn how to use blogging, video, audio, and social media to
create engaging content for your audience. Through case studies,
tutorials, and lively Q&A you will learn how to simply and quickly
create content that will turn visitors into evangelists for your store.

Are you selling fiber, but don’t speak the language? Do terms like
woolen, worsted, combed, carded, roving, and sliver have you
stumped? Want to know the different between a rolag and a puni?
Interested in creating better marketing copy for your displays?
According to the 2013 State of the Specialty NeedleArts survey, 50%
of yarn shops are selling fiber; if you are among them or considering
stocking fiber you need this class. In hands-on demonstrations, we
will go through step-by-step how fiber is prepared commercially and
by hand. Even if you don’t plan to stock fiber, this class will give you
a better understanding of how yarn is made. Class Max: 25

Let your computer handle the math!
Spreadsheets are perhaps the most
powerful tool for a knit or crochet pattern writer or tech editor. In
this hands-on introduction to spreadsheets, we’ll use Microsoft Excel
to learn the basics of how spreadsheets work, including naming cells,
completing metric conversions, rounding numbers, and setting up
basic formulas that calculate stitches, rows, stitch multiples and yarn
amounts. You will begin setting up a powerful, multi-use “calculator”
that can save you hours of work. Students should bring: laptop
(PC or Mac) loaded with Excel or OpenOffice Spreadsheet, power
cord (if needed), pencil and paper. Class Max: 30
By combining another yarn to your knitting via methods borrowed
from weaving, many aesthetic possibilities become apparent, certain
problems may be solved, and a new technique is added to your
oeuvre. Textures are easily obtainable, colors may be taken more
advantage of, and patterning is more accessible. Novelty yarns are
handled better, less yarn might be used, gorgeous but uncomfortable
fibers need not touch your skin, and stretching can be minimized.
Learn: * The “up/down” method of applying a separate yarn onto
knits, * The “in/out” method of applying a separate yarn onto knits,
* The slip stitch method of the same yarn as a “weft” thread, *
Vertical weaves, color weaves, smocking weaves, and much more.
The applications of these techniques include: * What kinds of yarns
are best suited for these fabrics, * What kinds of garments are best
suited for these fabrics, * How to chart these weaves so you’ll know
what you’ll be getting beforehand. Students should bring: worsted
weight yarn of at least 2 different colors, size 6 & 9 needles,
sport weight yarn, bulky weight yarn of yet another color and/
or some textured/novelty yarn of any weight, graph paper,
pencils (preferably in several colors), eraser, tapestry needle and
homework swatches and needles. Material Fee: $1 Please pay

My latest obsession? Knitting Intarsia
IN THE ROUND! Intarsia is a multi-color knitting technique used to
create separate pieces of different colors and (sometimes) fibers
that appear inlaid in each other much like a jigsaw puzzle. Unlike
Fair Isle, the yarn strands are not carried across the back of the
work but dropped and twisted as color changes. Most often, designs
are achieved within a flat piece of knitted fabric. But what about
socks, hats or a cowl? I don’t want a seam running up the leg of
my socks! So, let’s get together, join in the round and knit Intarsia
– seamlessly! Students should bring: homework, basic knitting
supplies (scissors, markers, etc.). Class Max: 25

Create your own signature store fashion
style with the help of Josh Bennett. In this class, students will review
current and upcoming fashion trends and develop their own sense
of store style to differentiate their independent shop to their target
markets. The designs that are featured in a store are reflections of
the shopowner and staff and are the basis of making a store brand
that sets them apart from others in the market – both regionally and
nationally. By blending fashion with store personality, the store brand
becomes stronger and shopowners are refreshed and renewed with
more excitement. Participants are asked to sketch a design and
