The mother of an East Bridgewater teen who died last summer after overdosing on N-Bomb is leading the
charge to criminalize the drug in Massachusetts in the hopes that her family’s tragic loss can serve as a
warning to parents nationwide.
“Nothing taught me the meaning of life like losing my daughter,” Erin Valentine said of 15-year-old Emily
Miller, who died of liver failure June 21 — three weeks after she was put into a medically induced coma at
Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after overdosing on her first hit of the synthetic hallucinogen.

“Because of the severity of the initial insult, which was caused by the exposure to N-Bomb, the doctors said
she developed septic shock, which ultimately led to organ failure,” Valentine said. “Kids need to know that this
isn’t something that they can experiment with — my message to parents is simple: Be aware that this is out
there, spread awareness about it and be open to having conversations with your kids about it.”

Valentine said Emily, who went by “Tootsie,” was dealing with some psychiatric issues, including depression,
before her fatal overdose — but was otherwise a good student who loved art and didn’t experiment with
drugs.

Valentine, who testified about her daughter’s death before the Judiciary Committee last year, is hoping the
tragedy will prompt lawmakers to amend state drug laws to designate N-Bomb as a Class B substance.

“I want the legislation to pass. I want to empower our local authorities to be able to enforce the law,” Valentine
said. “As a community, as parents, as teachers, everyone needs to be on the same page with this drug. This
is something that is killing children.”
