“SCIS imbued me with a strong passion for learning
and creativity. SCIS has provided numerous after-school
activities to teach students how to be cooperative and
creative, and it has created a comfortable environment
for students to reach a high-level of academic
achievement. I participated in the volleyball team and
learned to cooperate with other teammates; moreover,
I contributed to the school’s community by translating
the school’s “Dragon News” publication into Korean
for Korean parents.

Saying Goodbye
in Shanghai
A Summer Of Self-Discovery
By: Andrea Smollan
By: Siobhan Brown
Losing friends to repatriation is a constant
reality for expats living around the globe.
Saying goodbye to those we have formed
strong bonds with is never easy and the
adjustment that follows can also be
challenging. I recently faced this struggle
when I said goodbye to my dear friend of
three years back in January. Our two year old
children Hayden and Kaden (or Hay-Hay and
Kay-Kay as they came to refer to each other)
grew up thinking they were siblings, sharing
holidays, celebrations, friends and even their
Ayi who split her time between our homes.
As often happens, after three years we
received the news that Lauren and her family
would be moving back to Kansas City. I had
conflicting emotions. My first thought was
of my son. I felt such anguish that he would
be losing his best friend, someone he had
known since birth. We were happy for our
friends and this new opportunity, but also
feared the hole they would leave behind
would be vast and impossible to fill. It was
time for them to go and for us to move on,
I just didn’t know how we would do that
exactly. I have been an expat for four years
now and said goodbye to many friends but
never to an entire family, one I had come
to adore and whose life had become so
completely enmeshed in mine. It didn’t feel
like I was saying goodbye to friends, It felt
like I was losing a sister and a daughter and
the emptiness I felt was palatable. Selfish as
it may be, I would have preferred we were
the ones saying goodbye, not the ones who
were being “left” behind.
For many expats, saying goodbye to valued
friends is nothing new. It begins when we
leave our home countries and embark on
new adventures abroad. According to Carrie
Jones, Director of Counseling Services at
CCS, common feelings that occur during a
move are “sadness and a reluctance to leave
family and friends as well as the comforts
and conveniences of a familiar way of life.
Many people will be assuming new roles or
even re-shaping their identities as they take
different jobs/promotions, or transition in or
out of the workforce. This can cause great
anxiety and stir up all sorts of questioning,
even for children who are often nervous
about starting new schools and making
new friends.” Expats don’t really know with
any certainty how long they will live in any
Coping Strategies To
Help During A Move

Hayden & Kaden having a ball
location or when it will be time to repatriate.
For expats returning to the life they once
knew, the change can still be overwhelming
and full of emotional conflict. According to
Carrie, “Those returning home may worry
about fitting back in after having such a
life-changing experience, seeing so many
different things and having a perspective
few can share.”
It has been three months since our friends
departed and while we miss them dearly,
we are making our way, exploring new
friendships, traversing the city, trying new
activities, working and traveling. When my
son asks me, “Where is Hay-Hay?” I simply
explain to him that she is in America and we
will see her this summer. He seems to find
this idea acceptable and is patient to wait.
I know I must learn from his resilience and
recognize that with each new friend we
welcome into our lives, we give our families
an invaluable opportunity. It’s how we
handle this fluid and somewhat transient
lifestyle that will determine how emotionally
successful we are during our time abroad.
This is an extract from the full version
article printed in the April issue of
Shanghai Family Magazine.
Losing friends to repatriation is a constant
reality for expats living around the globe.

•Take time to process the experience you just left, grieve if you need to, but also be sure to focus on and remember what you learned and gained from it.
•Be intentional about establishing new, healthy, fun routines, rituals, and
traditions (kids especially need this).
•Stay in contact with friends you leave behind. For young children, help them arrange Skype dates or visits, the impact of this is immeasurable!
•Plan a special outing, party, meal etc.
to help give family members a fun and
positive way to put closure on that
chapter of a relationship.
•Parents need to encourage children to
talk with parents or another trusted
adult so they can freely express their
feelings and acknowledge how difficult
it is to say goodbye.
Community Center Shanghai has
a team of more than a dozen
certified counselors, specializing in a broad range of psychological, emotional, and relational issues and offering sessions in multiple languages in convenient locations across Shanghai. So whether you could use assistance with a clinical
level mental health issue or just need a little extra support or a caring presence, CCS can help.

COMMUNITY CENTER SHANGHAI
COUNSELING PROGRAM
Summer is around the corner. For some expats, this may mean returning home to visit family
and friends, or an extended vacation that offers a welcome respite from the heat. But for
those who remain in Shanghai, it can also be a time of challenge and change. With the stress
of altered routines, prolonged periods of unpredictable weather, and feeling distanced from
family and friends, expats remaining in Shanghai may be inclined to wish the summer away
rather than embrace it. While it may be hard to approach the summer with the same kind of
excitement as a trip back home, perhaps expats staying in Shanghai can prepare for the
summer by embarking on a different kind of journey…a journey of self-discovery.
Often the busy pace of our lives in Shanghai can leave us feeling out of touch with ourselves
as our schedules fill up with school, work, social and travel commitments. The idea of a few
‘quiet’ months in Shanghai may leave some feeling uncertain how to spend their time and
with whom. While some expats may look forward to a slower pace of life, for others, such
uncertainty may give rise to feelings of frustration, loneliness, isolation, and perhaps even
depression or anxiety. However, finding time to reconnect with yourself over the summer
may be the very thing you need to combat these feelings.
Self-discovery is defined as the process of learning more about yourself and trying to better
understand what your potential is, and what unexplored interests you may have. Here are a
few tips to help you begin your process of self-discovery and development over the summer.
REFLECT ON YOURSELF
Take a moment to reflect on yourself and how you feel. Try thinking of ways to begin a
journey that transforms or strengthens both how you think about yourself and your life in
Shanghai into something more deep and meaningful. Begin by examining what your motives
are and what it is you would like to develop within yourself over the summer. Are there
specific areas you would like to focus on or things you would like to do or change? Ask
yourself what brings you joy, fulfillment or inspiration? The key is to approach your selfexploration with patience and a willingness to be surprised.
CULTIVATE INNER & OUTER CONNECTIONS
“Discovery consists of looking at the same thing as everyone else and thinking something
different.”(Albert Szent-Görgyi) Try examining new and different opportunities for growth
and exploration within yourself. Embrace challenge. Take up a hobby or commit to a course
you have been meaning to do but can never find the time or confidence to pursue. Take a
risk. Often self-development involves pushing yourself and your limits by trying something
different. Be curious about your potential and your world around you.
Find ways to reconnect with others and Shanghai. One of the advantages of living in a place
like Shanghai is there is a wealth of opportunities to investigate and learn from. External
curiosity often leads to internal growth and fulfillment. So explore, explore, explore. Take a
tour. Connect with nature. Walk a different part of the city. Perhaps take some time to give
back by getting involved in your community or volunteer. Research shows that helping others
can influence our self-perspective and is linked with internal well-being.
CCS is pleased to introduce our
Director of Counseling at CCS.
Carrie is a licensed Clinical Social Worker
from Texas (USA) who holds a Master’s
degree in Social Work. Carrie works
with children, adolescents and adults
on issues related to cultural adjustment
and transition, family and relationship
issues, grief and loss, substance abuse,
anxiety, eating disorders, stress,
depression and mental illness.
If you find yourself in need of guidance
or feel you could benefit from a little
general support, don’t hesitate to reach
out to your local Community Center.
CCS has a large team of compassionate
counselors with solid experience
supporting families in Shanghai. Our
highly trained counselors fully understand the unique challenges families
face and can help adults and children
find balance during times of change.

An equally important aspect of self-discovery is taking time for self-care and giving yourself
a break. Take a time out. Meditate. Exercise. Journal. Paint. Space and time away from others
may feel strange but try using the break to be present and connected with your mind, to
enjoy the quiet, and to be silent. Self-reflection is an internal activity towards discovery and
will encourage personal development, bringing you closer to knowing yourself more deeply.
After all, as Maxwell Maltz so aptly said, “If you make friends with yourself, you will never
be alone”.

River Of Hearts
River of Hearts (ROH), established in 2003,
is the oldest outreach program associated
with the Community Center Shanghai.
ROH provides expatriates living and
working in Shanghai the opportunity to
graciously donate new and used items. The
donations are delivered throughout the
year to needy communities across China.
Thanks to committed donors, enthusiastic volunteers, and the support of our generous
sponsor Hogar Property Services, approximately 10,000 boxes of donated items
have been shipped to provinces such as Yunnan, Heilongjiang, and Guizhou.
ROH’s flagship event is called the Sorting Party and approximately fifty parties have
been held over the last twelve years, averaging 4 per year. Volunteers at the party help
prepare donations for sorting, loading and transporting. Check out the below website
for details on our next event.

You can also support River of Hearts initiatives by shopping at the Buy a Mile Bazaar
found at CCS events and at the Sorting Party. At the Bazaar, shoppers can get great
deals on gently used or new items and proceeds from these sales will help cover ROH
shipping costs. Designer items, books in several languages, children’s toys, housewares,
and more, can be found for fantastic discounts. Enjoy the pleasure of shopping with the
knowledge you are supporting a good cause.

Shanghai 123 is a grassroots initiative
led by the local international community.
This program was designed for individuals
and families during their most critical period,
and most attendees have less than 6 months
experience in Shanghai. Shanghai 123 is a
free half-day orientation where community
volunteers talk about common challenges,
answer questions and provide practical
resources and tips.
A light breakfast, lunch and care for children
2-12 years old is provided free of charge.
The program was launched in 2008 with
the help of Michelle Wright, a Shanghai
Community International School mother,
American Women’s Club member and
CCS employee. The idea grew organically
as an initiative to create a not-for-profit,
non-partisan platform for sharing resources
and tips. Relying 100% on informed and
engaging speakers, the program grew into
what the Community Center Shanghai
proudly calls Shanghai 123. The program
is incredibly successful at providing the
international community basic but
essential information to ensure a soft
landing in Shanghai.
Programs are held at our three center
locations in Pudong, Hongqiao and
Minhang, Saturdays from 9:00-12:30pm.
The 2015 season will resume in August.

By offering workshops, networking

opportunities to collaborate, make

LINK’s quarterly volunteer matching

annually. Check the website for more

www.communitycenter.cn/charitylink
Each year Giving Tree provides gift bags to over 10, 000 underprivileged children, filled
with much needed school supplies, winter clothing, and other necessities. It is our hope
that these children will be inspired within the program and grow up wanting to carry
on the mission of Giving Tree. These small bags have positively impacted thousands of
volunteers and children throughout its twelve year history. This year, Giving Tree will
celebrate a momentous milestone when it presents its 100,000th gift bag to a
deserving child. From humble beginnings in 2003, the program has gone on to touch
thousands with a message of love and generosity.
There is still time to get involved as a donor or to sponsor a child at migrant schools
found throughout Shanghai and in the surrounding provinces. Team up with one of
fifty organizations that help fill bags or get your own workplace or community group
involved! Each bag is personalized for a specific child with their preferences and details
in mind. In late November/early December, bags are given by the donors directly to the
children in a fun half-day event held at the migrant schools.
“ Thank you for our gift, clothing and toys, and for not asking anything in
return, only wanting us to grow up in the sunshine of love. You want us
to do well in our studies and to serve our country when we grow up. We
respect your spirit, we want to learn from you and we will never forget
you.”

Why Do Teachers Love Instructing at CCS Minhang?
Private Tours at
CCS Pudong
Cheng Fei Chinese Language Teacher
CCS is the best place I’ve ever worked. Everyone I have met here is
easy going, professional and well organized. I love those big, cheery,
bright classrooms as well as the small and intimate rooms for private
lessons. I can’t help telling people about CCS when I make new
friends somewhere. I explain that CCS has so much to offer because
students can learn new languages and have the opportunity to learn
all about the different cultures living here in Shanghai. I am so proud
to work at CCS.
Registration Policy
Please refer to our website or visit your local center for complete
information on CCS registration and policy procedures.

I have been working as a Mosaic Teacher at the CCS in Minhang
for almost 3 years now and I love being a part of this team. It’s a great
pleasure working at the centre because I get to meet women from
different countries. I feel the courses offered contain valuable
information that helps new-comers settle down in Shanghai.
Students can learn international cooking, language skills, oil painting,
Chinese brush painting, mosaic, jewelry making, and so much more.
I feel that the Minhang Coordinators are very friendly, warm and
provide students with the perfect environment & amenities to
facilitate learning.

Nongluck Thai Cooking Teacher
6-12 years of age
I have been working with CCS for over a year. I have met so many
wonderful people who are passionate about learning to cook Thai
food and many of my students become good friends later. I’m proud
to teach them a skill that they can later share with their entire family.
At the end of each class, I’m so pleased to see a smile on my students’
faces when they taste dishes they have lovingly prepared.
