Worship Welcomes Us All!
by Tom Ferry, Director of Music Ministries
Worship, from the Anglo Saxon word ‘weorthscipe’,
literally means to ascribe worth to God. We do that
every Sunday in many ways. Some of the ways we do
this are: by remembering all God has done for us, by
reading God’s word, by singing hymns of praise, by
calling on God for help, and by playing or singing
music for the glory of God. J.S. Bach, arguably one
of the best church musicians ever, wrote on every
piece of his music S.D.G., short for Soli Deo Gloria,
which means, “only to the glory of God.”
When a person or group of people provides special
music in worship, that music is an offering of the
whole congregation to God. It may be that the music
is complex enough that the congregation could not
all sing it, or it may be on an instruments that
require skills many in the congregation have not
developed, but the musical offering is not just from
the people making the music but from the whole
congregation. We as a congregation support the
music makers in their learning and practice so that
they may give of their best to God. We also get to
enjoy listening to and praising God through the
music.
What does it mean to give of your best? It does not
mean that only the most skilled musicians can praise
God in worship. It does not mean that years must be
spent perfecting a particular piece of music. Instead
it means that those who give of their gifts prepare
with God in mind and strive to do their best job in
that moment. Someone who is feeling ill will
obviously not sing or play as well as they would when
feeling better, but they can still strive to make the
best offering to God possible in their condition.
Again, someone who has only studied their
instrument for one year will not play as well as they
will with another year of practice, but they can still
work to play the best that they know how for God.
During the summer, with all the choirs taking a rest
until Rally Day, there are even more opportunities
for individuals and small groups to praise God
through special musical offerings. I encourage you to
share your gifts in worship whether you are 5 or 85.
God has blessed us richly, let us ascribe worth to
God, let us worship!
Tom Ferry

THANKS!
From the Social Missions Committee
2015 Mission Auction Disbursements
Another wonderful year for the spring Mission Auction due to your
generosity and the generosity of local businesses who provided items
and monetary support for the event on April 18. The food was
fantastic, the decorations very ‘up north,’ and the volunteers
entertained the crowd with games for kids and adults. The Social
Missions Committee has discussed the needs of and commitments to
various local, regional and global groups for disbursement of the
contributions which totaled $12,551. The disbursement decisions thus
far are in the chart below, with local missions receiving $5,140,
regional missions receiving $1,000, and global missions receiving
$4,600. A remaining amount of $1,911 will be appropriated at subsequent meetings. We want
to express our most sincere thank you to the members, sponsors and friends of Como Park
Lutheran for making such a tremendous outreach possible to those who are in need of
support. We can assure you that the recipients will be greatly appreciative as well.
You should also know that the Guatemala Baptismal Font for which money was raised last year
has been handcrafted with care by Brad Peper’s father, Phillip. We will be blessing this font as a
congregation prior to the next trip to Guatemala, tentatively scheduled for February 2016
around President’s Day. Meanwhile, take a look at the picture on the back cover and admire
the talents God has given Brad’s father! God also gave Brad a talent to be the Emcee this year
for the Mission Auction!

* Meet Lue Moua! *
Our Next Pastoral Intern
I was born in Ban Vinai Refugee Camp in Thailand,
and came to the United States in 1987 with my
family when I was five years old.
I received my M.A. in Mission and World
Christianity from Luther Seminary in 2007, and,
in 2014, I made the decision to return to Luther
Seminary to enroll in the Master of Divinity degree
program. For the past five years, I have served as
the youth director at Good Samaritan Lutheran
Church, a mission start with outreach to Hmong
families on the east side of St. Paul.
I am married to Kao Nou, and we have a two-year-old son,
Nathaniel. Kao Nou is currently a PhD student in the Social Work
Department at the U of M. We enjoy fishing together as a family
and vacationing in Missoula, Montana, where Kao Nou's family
resides.
I am excited about joining Como Park Lutheran Church and look
forward to both the teaching and learning that I will experience
here.
Lue will begin his internship with us on Sunday, August 23rd.

THE LAST WORD
by Pastoral Intern Dan Schewe
When I was a child we would spend much of our summer vacation at our family’s lake
lot. It is a plot of land in Northern
Minnesota, past the pavement and just off
a gravel road. I remember it being filled
with trees, animals, and situated on a
peaceful little lake. Throughout my
childhood that plot of land changed some.
We cleared trees, made paths, built
structures, but it always remained full of
nature. There was always something
special about that place for me. I
remember exploring the
woods with friends or our
dog, being amazed at all the
different creatures we would
find. I remember taking an
inflatable raft out into the
middle of the lake and just
floating where the tide took
me. I would do that often,
just take out a raft to soak
up the beauty of nature and feel the wind
blow me where it would as I gazed across
the serene still waters.
It was on that lot and on that lake that
started to truly experience God through
the beauty of nature. I saw God’s
boundless creativity in the plants and
animals. I experienced the vastness of God
as I saw on a still lake looking up at the
night sky. There is much of the almighty
we experience through nature, and for
many people this is where they experience
God most acutely.
As we make our summer plans, I wonder
how we will all experience God this
summer?
I’m excited to take a group of students to
Sky Ranch in Colorado. Not because of the
brilliant views, or the experiences they may
have with animals, but because of how they
may experience God there. How they will
be met by the divine in their adventure and
how that will affect the course of their life.
I’m excited about our
Summer Vacation Bible
School, from July 27 – 31.
I’m looking forward to
how the children of our
congregation and
community will
experience God that
week, and how those
helping will as well. I
want to invite you to think about how you
might be a part of this program for the
children of our community. We all have
gifts we can share with these children to
help them experience God, from creating
decorations to listening to the children that
week.
Wherever our summer takes us, I hope and
pray that we can all have our eyes and
hearts open to see and feel how God is
already ahead of us, calling us to experience
Him in the adventures that lay before us.
Shalom,
Dan
