THE EVERGREEN EXPRESS PAGE 2 Resident Spotlight: Shirley Bonawitz Shirley grew up in Millersburg, PA with one brother who is nine years older than she. A graduate of Millersburg High School, she also graduated from Cedar Crest College with a BA in mathematics. Shirley went on for a teaching degree and permanent certification at Millersville State College. Her first teaching position was at Manheim Central High School where she taught math for six years. The first time the students had a fruit roll for her, she had no idea what was going on. Fruit rolls were not done when she was a student. THE EVERGREEN EXPRESS PAGE 3 Staff Spotlight: Sharon Adams Shirley has also worked as a home health aid and hostess at Millersville University. She is the mother of two and grandmother of two. Attending wrestling meets were a favorite for Shirley. She remembers she could hardly teach the following day due to cheering so loudly. Shirley enjoys anything that stimulates the mind. Reading, good music, working crossword puzzles, playing cards, and variety of hand held electronic games. Shirley came to Evergreen following surgery and a hospital stay. She said, “I’d rather be in my own home. But since it is no longer possible to live alone, it’s great to live here.” We are happy to introduce Sharon as the newest member of the activity staff. Already we have found Sharon to be enthusiastic, passionate, and caring. She enjoys working at Evergreen Estates with the warm smiles and welcoming words of the residents. Sharon has many interests. She loves hiking, biking, scrap booking, antique shopping, reading, and hanging out with friends. Another love is eating - especially desserts! A graduate of Garden Spot High School, Sharon grew up in New Holland, PA. She has three sisters, and said, “I always wanted a brother.” Her favorite childhood memory is times playing with the Amish neighbor children by the creek and in the corn shocks. Sharon previously worked as assistant to the president at Ladder Towers in Akron where they manufactured the aerial ladder part for fire trucks. Sharon met her husband Kevin at Hospice Grief Support Meetings. She and Kevin both lost their first spouse to cancer. Together they blend a family of seven children and also have a granddaughter. Sharon’s caring and love of life and people, grow out of her personal life experiences. CHRISTMAS BAZAAR - DECEMBER 8 Shirley volunteers for the activity department in taking care of the resident store three days a week. We greatly appreciate her help.
