Who We Are
The Weaving and Fiber Arts Center is the primary outreach activity of the Weavers' Guild of Rochester, Inc., a 501(c)3
charitable organization. The Center, opened in January 2002, is located in Piano Works Mall. Managed entirely by Guild
volunteers, it is supported financially by course tuition and tax-exempt gifts. We offer classes in a variety of fiber arts

Display Your Work at the Center
When you next visit the Center, look to the wall on the right to see
unique and outstanding projects of students who attend our classes. The
instructors and management team encourage everyone to display their
treasures for a while. It may be that many of us have watched your
project in progress over the weeks, and we would love to see the
finished piece. Weavers, dyers, sewers, knitters, felters…step up and
share!

WaFAC is celebrating its 12th year! Since January 2002 we have offered weaving and other fiber arts courses at all skill
levels for youth and adults - year round, days, evenings and weekends! This is your opportunity to learn more about the
Weaving & Fiber Arts Center.
Come and meet our instructors, see demonstrations, and view sample work representing all our January to April 2014
weaving and fiber arts classes. Demonstrations will include floor loom, rigid heddle, inkle, table and tapestry loom
weaving, Fiberworks (computer software for weavers), spinning and more! Instructors and students will be wearing
garments, scarfs and other accessories they have made. Bring your fiber friends....and even kids will have an opportunity
to try weaving!

Is weaving for you? Find out! You will experiment with
color and texture while trying a table loom, inkle loom,
rigid heddle loom, frame loom, and kumihimo braiding
disk. As you sample these techniques, Jan will provide
lots of individual attention and help you explore
possibilities for future weaving adventures. You may
discover a new love, and take home a treasure! This
fiber-filled experience is fun and educational for all, even
parents and kids. Beginners and those with some
experience are welcome!

This is a great way to begin weaving, help set up a loom,
create a scarf, table runner or place mats and see if this
craft is for you! You will weave your project on a prewarped loom, while learning about basic types of
weaving patterns. Yarns at the Center may be used at
no cost, or you may bring special yarns to use in your
project. Some students may choose to bring their own
portable loom for weaving in class and at home. The
instructor will contact students prior to class to discuss
choice of loom, project and warp colors. Beginners and
those with some experience can repeat this class for
continued learning opportunities.

What Is a Core Weaving Course?
The next seven courses are Core Weaving Courses,
which have classes once a week over a 6-9 week
period. They are offered daytime, evenings and
weekends. The Center has floor looms, table looms,
rigid heddle, inkle looms, related equipment and a
selection of fibers. Students may plan a weaving
project on any of these looms, depending on loom
availability and paid registration. Students may also
transport their portable looms for weaving in class
and at home (indicate this on your registration form).

Unique Weaving Technique
Mini Looms / Marvelous Projects

Whether you call them palm sized pin looms or by
proprietary names such as Weave-It, Weavette, or Zoom
Loom, these simple to use little devices have great
potential! It takes very little time to weave a 4 inch
square that has the wonderful feature of no raw edges.
Squares can be assembled in many ways to create 2- or
3-dimensional larger objects, ranging from toys and folkart dolls to hats, bags, and other small accessories and
even clothing, throws and blankets. You’ll use a variety
of textures and color “tricks” as you learn not only the
useful and ubiquitous plain weave, but other woven
patterns, too! Your registration includes yarns and use of
the looms during class meetings. If you’ve not woven
before, this is a fun way to give it a try; if you are already
a weaver, you’ll be pleased and surprised to discover
this unique technique and tool.

theory and give you the support needed to progress to

Enjoy creatively exploring design, pattern and color
study while calculating and preparing a weaving project
for a floor, table or rigid heddle loom. Students can
utilize the WaFAC library and the Fiberworks software
program and receive inspiration and ideas from your
instructor. Students may choose to measure a warp to
weave at home or in another class. A variety of different
projects and design ideas will be shared. This is a great
chance to find ways to use some of your yarns. Bring
yarn for intended project; warp & sample of weft yarn, if
applicable. The instructor will contact students prior to
class to discuss individual options.

Often weavers wish to tweak patterns in books or
magazines but are not quite sure how to do it.
Drawdowns by hand are tedious and prone to error; this
is where the computer enters the picture. Students will
come to class with looms dressed according to
instructions from the teacher. Starting with some basic
weave structures, we will begin our designing process by
discussing specific traditional weaves and how they are
constructed. We will then proceed to explore tie-ups,
treadlings, float problems and color on the computer
using Fiberworks software. Once satisfied with a design,
you will go back to your loom and start weaving your
very own creation. We will try out several patterns so
that you can go home with several possible variations for
your particular weave, and ideas and plans for more.
Requirements: A loom, four, eight, or more shafts & a
laptop with Fiberworks installed. A downloadable version
is available for free on Fiberworks website. Let instructor
know if you need a laptop or have problems
downloading the program.

Lay it on! Theo Moorman developed an easy system of
laying in supplemental threads to allow free and
spontaneous placement of shapes, color and texture
wherever and whenever it is desired. Of course, carefully
planned designs are possible too. Transparent effects
resembling a watercolor wash are possible, as are the
thick rich, impasto look of an old master. The weaving
may look like a traditional tapestry--but have the
advantage of using MUCH less time to weave and
showing off every inch of a precious fiber—or may be
truly sheer see-through fabric--or an in-between weight
perfect for clothing and accessories. The techniques are
simple, and the class project will be a sampler of
possibilities and variations with each weaver working
only on her/his own loom. Participants will have a choice
of warp plans prior to the start of the workshop with the
option of a warp long enough to start a project to be
completed at home. Instructor will email instructions prior
to class. The warp may be supplied by the weaver, or
pre-made warps for inlay may be purchased from the
instructor for $6 to $15 dependent on fiber and size of
project.

Huck lace weaves appear to be intricate and
complicated, but once you learn the secrets of this
weave structure, you can design your own cloth. The
trick is in selecting the appropriate shafts to raise or
leave down to create warp and weft "spots". Once you
understand the design process you will be freed from
following recipes in books, and will be able to make up
your own patterns. You will come to class with a basic
threading given by the instructor for either a four- or
eight-shaft loom (or more!) and weave on your own
loom. We will discuss structure, color, suitable yarns,
and explore variations. Designing will take place on both
paper and computer as we experiment with pattern
possibilities.

Tapestry 1: The Woven Image

Using a simple loom and beautiful yarns, try your hand
at the ancient techniques of tapestry weaving to create
an image in woven cloth. The word “tapestry” means
something quite specific to a weaver….a design or
image woven directly into the cloth using some
specialized techniques to create lines and shapes,
designs and pictures. Your hands are the tools which
weave together strong warps with brightly colored wefts.
Beginning on a small portable loom, you’ll learn to
prepare the loom and use tapestry techniques to make a
small sampler. Then you are set to move on to begin a
design of your own, putting those techniques into
practice. Small portable looms will be provided by the
instructor and are available for purchase for $20.00.

If you’ve tried your hand at tapestry and would like to try
a bit more, here’s the opportunity. Bring your own
tapestry loom, and we’ll begin with a fresh warp and try
some new ideas. You’ll learn more about planning your
design and using a cartoon, play with color and blending,
and try some new tapestry techniques. We’ll also try
some textural effects and talk about finishing and
presentation. Materials for warps and a selection of
threads for wefts will be provided; class participants may
also bring other threads from their own collections.

definition to your woven piece, often with simple but

binding off or even increasing and decreasing don't work
for every project? In this class, the student will learn
many different and fun techniques that can then be used
as desired. Using these techniques the student can
make a miniature patterned sweater. Materials: 1 Skein

An Introduction to Knitting Machines

Try Spinning—Beginners Only!

Try spinning on one of the Center’s Louet wheels and
discover the creativity and satisfaction of making your
own gorgeous yarns. Spinning requires more than one
class session to perfect your skills, but this class will
show you what beautiful results can be achieved once
you’ve learned the basics. The instructor will also
demonstrate spinning on a drop spindle. Join us to begin
a journey of creativity and possibilities in fiber. Beginning
spinners may register for this class again. Indicate on
the registration form if you wish to use one of our
wheels.

popular right now. If you are interested in learning more
about the making of felt, from its ancient history to some
of the wonderful modern applications for this fabric, then
this is the class for you. No mess, no stress. View a
striking and amusing video. Learn about the history,
physics and chemistry that contribute to felt making.
Learn about the different methods of fiber preparation
and the felting properties of various fibers and how to

Garment Design Using Handwoven

Have you ever woven yardage, dyed a piece of material
or felt and been unable to decide how to use them to
best advantage? This class will help you overcome your
fear of cutting into that fabric. Using some basic
commercial patterns, students will learn how to trace the
design onto pattern material and modify the basic
pattern to include design elements, add pockets, change
closures and collars, add or subtract length and more.
The instructor will give tips on how to work with different
fabrics, how to place the pattern to get the most effect
from the fabric, and how to incorporate some of the
changes mentioned above. The student will leave with
fabric and pattern cut and ready to be sewn by you or a
seamstress! Patterns will be yours to use again if
desired. Patterns will include 2 short jackets, 1 long
jacket, and 2 vests - your choice. Students must bring
handwoven or dyed yardage. Instructor will email

This ancient Japanese braiding technique is perfect for
creating narrow wares---with or without beads—for use
as jewelry, ties and trims, closures for garments and
even more. You may choose to use the traditional
braiding stand, called a dai, or equipment as simple as a
foam or cardboard disc. Materials and use of equipment
are supplied, but you may wish to bring ribbons, yarns
and beads you’d especially like to incorporate. No
previous experience is required; advanced braiders will

Marbling is an easy, delightful method to decorate paper
or cloth in bright, colorful designs using thickened water
and special paints. Start with marbling paper for note

This is an introduction to the transfer of images to fabric
and paper using a light source. Sunprinting is a
photographic process which uses the “sunlight” to
expose images. Explore the different types of “sunlight”
needed to create a fabric unique to each student. No

experience are invited to return to continue
experimenting and developing their own technique.
Students can bring lunch or purchase from nearby

The Guild offers scholarship opportunities for new
fiber enthusiasts as well as those who have been
involved in the craft for a long time. Financial
assistance is available for individuals or groups
interested in pursuing knowledge that will enrich
the fiber arts community.
There are two sources for these funds: the
Margaret Carr fund and Horace Lethbridge fund.
Carr scholarships are for members only and
recipients are required to share the knowledge
gained from their study. Lethbridge scholarships do
not have these restrictions.
Scholarship awards are intended to enhance one’s
education in textile arts, and may be applied to
course fees and some related expenses at most
learning venues. Funds are not available for
lodging, meals or travel expenses. The maximum
award is $550 per applications.

Like a landscape designer, you’ll plan out where to place
pools of color, argyle style lattices of hues and columns
of subtle gradations in your knit or woven project. Then
we’ll calculate and create the required “packaging” of
yarn to achieve your goals. On the second day we’ll dye
the fiber to achieve the desired effect, and when the yarn
is dry and ready to work with, we’ll meet a third time to
critique skeins and begin the knitting--or weaving
process--of the final product. You may use any natural
fiber for your project and we will select the most
appropriate class of dye for your choices. Knitters should
note that a yarn with a little “spring” to it will be more
forgiving than a non-elastic choice; weavers will find that
the opposite is true. There will be time for you to work on
more than one project, so if you both knit and weave,
you might try one of each. A materials list will be sent
when your registration for class is confirmed.

try working with colorful felt. Students will be able to
choose from six wash-fast acid dye colors (over dyeing
creates new palettes) to dye a piece of wool felt yardage

felt can be provided to add sleeves for a jacket. The
instructor will provide instruction on the best way to
achieve the desired results on wool felt. Students will
leave with fabric dyed and ready for garment

are surface design techniques of hand stitching and
binding cloth with thread. In the dye pot, these stitched
and bound areas resist the dye leaving lines and marks
on the finished fabric. On 3/22, students will learn a
number of stitch and bound resist techniques and will
complete the stitching during the following days before
returning on 3/29 and dyeing the fabrics in a cochineal
dye pot. Supply list will be sent prior to class. Mordanted

In this exploratory, mixed-media workshop, combine the
shine and preciousness of fine silver metal clay with the
versatility and difficult-to-identify looks of resin clay to
create both fun and sophisticated jewelry. Sculptable
resin clay is available in both air-dry and two-part epoxy
forms, neither of which requires baking to cure. Play with
a few different types, achieving looks from delicate and
translucent to rugged and stone-like. Discover why resin
clay is catching on as a wonderful jewelry medium,
sometimes exhibiting exceptional strength, sometimes
an intriguing flexibility, and sometimes a terrific gripping
ability that allows small gems and other inclusions to be
pushed securely in place. Will you make resin clay

Learn how to set flat-backed stones, polymer clay or
glass cabochons, and other found objects after firing in
PMC, using strategies for controlling the size and shape
of the setting throughout metal clay shrinkage. The
demonstrated project will emphasize trapping a stone
from the back of the piece, allowing maximum play and
design opportunities in the creation of the front bezel.
