executive director’s letter of welcome
Welcome to Boise, one of America’s most livable cities. This small city offers the culture and entertainment of a larger urban
area in a place that feels a little like everyone’s hometown. BOISE IS... home to community and professional theater groups,
a philharmonic orchestra as well as opera, ballet and Shakespeare companies. Museums are plentiful and include the World
Center for Birds of Prey; a nature center and river observatory; one of three remaining territorial penitentiaries; a botanical
garden with a new theme garden highlighting native plants discovered by the Lewis and Clark Expedition; a hands-on science
center plus historical, art and black history museums.
Boise State University sits on the banks of the Boise River just minutes from downtown. Also along the river, the Idaho Anne
Frank Human Rights Memorial offers a tranquil spot for a moment of reflection.
In Boise, culture and entertainment exist in harmony with abundant outdoor recreation. Summer brings long days when a
workday can easily be followed by a round of golf, a bike ride or stroll on the 25-mile Greenbelt river path. Winter offers day and
night skiing just 16 miles up the mountain.
BOISE IS... affordable and is rated among the safest cities in the nation. Feel, see and touch this special city. You’ll go home
with wonderful memories.
Sincerely,
Bobbie Patterson
Executive Director
Boise Convention & Visitors Bureau

The Grove Plaza is a popular public gathering place downtown that hosts many
events such as Alive After Five and Jazz on the Grove and vendors from the Capital
City Public Market.
a rare blend
BOISE IS… A city nestled along
the river where the desert softly
meets the Rocky Mountains… A
city major corporations choose to
call home because they find urban
amenities without urban hassles…
A city touched by four seasons but
always with moderation... A city where
your daytime golf game could be the
warm up for your nighttime of skiing...
A city given birth by hardworking,
visionary pioneers and treasured
by those who sustain her life today.
Idaho’s capital is a small city with a
big heart and a hometown feeling.
BOISE IS… a nice place to be.
After more than a century, the
hard work and stubborn faith of
early pioneers have been amply
rewarded as Boise has grown into
a place where business, culture,
education, art and recreation thrive
in a comfortable partnership.
Those early settlers had the vision
to see that the plentiful waters of
the Boise River would be the pulse
of the community. Those waters
helped to turn the desert into a
lush oasis where trees now line the
boulevards and lend a sense of grace
to the developing lifestyle. Today the
river remains the place from which
this community draws its life.
The river banks have been developed
into a unique Greenbelt where people
of all ages find a quiet place to stroll,
jog, walk, skate or bike. A network
of city parks grace the river’s edge.
Residences, corporations, hotels
and restaurants have sprung up
within view of the pristine river, so
much a part of the Boise lifestyle.
To be counted among the city’s
great assets are Julia Davis Park, with
the Boise Art Museum, Idaho Black
Parades draw crowds of locals and visitors to downtown Boise.
Artisans set up shop at the Capital City Public Market Saturday mornings from April through December.

History Museum, Discovery Center,
Idaho Historical Museum, Zoo Boise
and, across the street, the Idaho Anne
Frank Human Rights Memorial; Ann
Morrison Park where soccer fields,
softball fields, playgrounds and picnic
areas draw constant activity; and
Kathryn Albertson Park where one
can stroll around ponds with gushing
fountains, island gazebos, a wetlands
area and thousands of trees and plants.
Boise’s leisurely feeling disguises
the pace of business activity in the
city. Major corporations here include
Boise Inc.; Boise Cascade, LLC.; J. R.
Simplot Company; Micron Technology;
Keynetics, Inc.; American Ecology and
URS. Hewlett-Packard and iLevel by
Weyerhaeuser (formerly T-J Technology)
are other major employers in the city.
Boise State University offers advanced
education opportunities for all ages.
The university has emerged as a
cultural center for the city. The new
community college, College of Western
Idaho, provides an academically
challenging environment for students.
A sense of rebirth and revitalization
is alive in the city. Downtown Boise
is developing a rich personality as a
place where people work, shop, eat,
meet and reside. Good examples of
this enjoyable mix are BoDo, the Linen
District, Old Boise, and Capitol Terrace.
Outside of the downtown area the
total shopping experience is greatly
enhanced by Boise Towne Square, Boise
Factory Outlets and Boise’s very first
shopping center, Vista Village, which
has undergone major renovation.
Boise’s people continue to influence
its future as they have its past. Thus
we find open spaces, even in the heart
of town, restoration and preservation
of history and a determination to
learn from the mistakes of other
communities. Quality of life is a tradition
of the past and a goal of the future.
To experience Boise is to feel the
sense of scenic beauty and recreation
that comes from living in the shadow
of the Rocky Mountains. The great
outdoors is literally a few miles up or
down the road. Both alpine and cross
a rare blend
country skiing are less than an hour away.
Water lovers will find lakes and rivers to
choose from and history buffs can reexplore where miners and trappers made
their mark. There are gemstones to be
found and wilderness to be experienced,
canyons to be wondered at and wildlife
to be photographed. The beauty of
this region, along with the full range of
outdoor recreation, makes Boise a perfect
base for business and extended pleasure.
BOISE IS… The hub of a great region
with a widely diverse economy… The
center of recreation in a state which
means recreation… The city where
people live because they choose
to… The city where the quality of life
is testimony to an urban center at
peace with its natural surroundings.
Kids love to splash around in the fountain at the Grove Plaza.
You can rent paddle boats to paddle around with the geese and ducks at Julia Davis Park.

The Hyde Park neighborhood, located near downtown Boise, is a great
place to people watch on one of the many sunny patios or do some window
shopping or antiquing.
community
BOISE IS... Idaho’s capital city, and
is the largest metropolitan area
in the state. It’s also the business,
financial, professional, transportation
and recreation center for a good
share of the Intermountain West.
From its founding in 1863, the City
of Trees has grown to anchor a 373,406
(2007) population base for urban Ada
County. This metropolitan area is among
the most rapidly growing in the country.
Recreation
Idaho is famous for its scenic beauty,
abundant wildlife and recreational
opportunities. Boise makes the
perfect jumping-off place to discover
these outdoor wonders and the city
itself offers a variety of recreation.
Not far from the city, whitewater rafting is a
popular summertime activity and a great way to
experience some of Idaho’s famous scenic beauty.
The state draws anglers from around
the world to its blue-ribbon streams
and lakes. You can cast a fly for rainbow
trout in the Boise River as it runs through
the heart of town. Or, bait a hook for
trout and bass at nearby Lucky Peak
Reservoir just 10 miles outside of town.
Water sports include swimming,
waterskiing, windsurfing, scuba diving
and tubing down the Boise River. Nearly
2,000 acres of beautiful parks make the
City of Trees a summer oasis. Five major
parks parallel the Boise River connected
by a unique greenbelt that offers
more than 25 miles of paths for
cycling, skating, jogging or strolling.
Boise’s golf courses offer an average of
325 playable days each year. The city has
tennis, racquetball and handball courts;
horse racing with pari-mutuel betting;
auto racing; rodeos and a public ice rink.
Winter brings both nordic and alpine
skiing with superb powder and nightlighted runs at Bogus Basin Mountain.
Additional cross-country trails can be
found at numerous locations near the
city. Snowmobiling is also a popular
winter activity and many sites are
available which offer recreational
trails and longer excursion routes.
Business and the Economy

Boise has a diverse economy. The
city began as a mining-supported
community and matured around
an agricultural economy.
Today, Ada County is headquarters
for six major corporations with a
combined annual sales volume
exceeding $17 billion. The corporate
6
headquarters group includes Boise
Cascade, LLC, Washington Group
International, Trus-Joist-A Weyerhaeuser
Business, Albertson’s, the J.R. Simplot
Company and Micron Technology.
This sector of the economy is
joined by wholesale and retail trade,
government, a growing services sector
and increasing manufacturing activity,
including high-tech firms like HewlettPackard and Micron. National, regional
and local banks are all well represented
in Boise and there is also significant
activity in real estate, brokerage,
insurance and other financial concerns.
The area’s cost of living - among
the lowest in the entire West continues to attract new business
and industry to Idaho’s capital city.
Education and Culture
Education and culture are virtually
inseparable in Boise thanks to the strong
contributions Boise State University
makes to its home community. It’s no
accident that both the multi-purpose
Taco Bell Arena and the Morrison Center
for the Performing Arts are located on its
spacious campus along the Boise River.
Boise State is the fastest growing
institution of higher education in
Idaho and now enrolls over 19,000
students each year. One of the recent
improvements at the university
includes the addition of the CavenWilliams Indoor Sports Facility.
Both the University of Idaho, located
in Moscow, Idaho, and Idaho State
University, located in Pocatello, Idaho,
have growing adjunct campuses in Boise.
The Boise Art Museum is Idaho’s
premier visual arts organization and
has been dedicated “to promoting
the enjoyment, appreciation and
understanding of the visual arts
to a broad public audience” since
opening in 1937. The museum offers
a lively array of exhibitions, collection
displays, educational programming
and community events throughout
the year. Both the Idaho Historical
Museum and the Idaho Black History
Museum are neighbors to the Boise
Art Museum in Julia Davis Park.
Professional dance and symphony
seasons are mounted each year by
Ballet Idaho, Idaho Dance Theatre,
the Trey McIntyre Project and the
Boise Philharmonic. A Master Chorale,
Opera Idaho and performances by the
Idaho Shakespeare Festival enhance
dramatic offerings by a number of
theatrical troupes around the city.
The Discovery Center of Idaho
adds another dimension to Boise’s
educational and cultural scene by
bringing science and technology
together in an environment
especially adapted to learning.
The hands-on exhibits are a
delight for the entire family.
Health Care
Boise’s major health care facilities
represent both specialized and acute
care. Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical
Students work on a portraits assignment in the
Drawing and Painting Program, just one of the
many fields of study available at Boise State.
Center is the region’s nationally
recognized Trauma Center and home
to Life Flight, the area’s first air medical
transport program. Saint Alphonsus
specializes in neuroscience, orthopedic,
surgery, rehabilitation, cancer, heart,
vascular and emergency services to care
for the most critically ill and injured. It
also offers family-based services that
include a Maternity Center and Neonatal
ICU that focus on personalizing the
birthing experience for women and
their families, plus a variety of health
and wellness classes for all ages.
St. Luke’s Boise Regional Medical
Center is Idaho’s largest healthcare
provider. Recognized as the region’s
leader in cancer, heart and women’s and
children’s care, St. Luke’s Boise services
also include a Center for Minimally
Invasive Surgery, Center for Heart and
Vascular Health, and St. Luke’s Internal
Medicine, a group of 30 internal
medicine physicians in four convenient
locations in the Treasure Valley. St. Luke’s
Boise has Idaho’s only children’s hospital
and the state’s largest cardiac programs.
St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor
Institute is a regional cancer treatment
center that includes the only dedicated
outpatient children’s cancer clinic.
Both medical centers have fully
staffed emergency departments that
are open twenty-four hours a day, seven
days a week. These institutions are
joined by the Veterans Affairs Medical
Center and the Idaho Elks Rehabilitation
Hospital which provides treatment
for the physically disabled. There are
also short and long-term acute care
facilities, mental and psychiatric care
centers, public health services, minor
emergency centers, exceptional
surgeons, specialists, family physicians,
dentists and retirement/assisted
living facilities throughout Boise that
provide convenient, top-of-the-line
medical services to the entire area.

Transportation
Boise’s airport is served by Alaska,
Delta/Sky West, Frontier, Horizon,
Northwest, Southwest, United Airlines
and US Airways. General aviation
facilities are available for private
aircraft. For more information,

Greyhound Bus Lines, BoiseWinnemucca Stages, Northwestern
Stage Lines, Valley Express and Sun
Valley Stages provide bus/charter
service. Cars can be rented at the
air terminal as well as downtown
and at hotel locations. Taxi service
is readily available and most local
hotels and motels provide airport
van services for their guests. Boise
Tours offers a shuttle service from
the airport to other area locations.
Valley Ride is an alternative way to

art galleries
& antiques
Touring Boise’s art galleries and
antique shops is easily worth a day
of your visit and then some. Pick and
choose according to your interests or
take the plunge and work as many of
them into your schedule as possible
- it’s an adventure well worth the time.
Boise’s art galleries are plentiful and
varied with exhibits which are sure
to interest all ages. All the galleries
are located in, or are easily accessible
from, downtown Boise. A visit to any
one of them is a bound to please.
Among the city’s art galleries you
will find an excellent representation
of local and regional artists as well as
works by nationally and internationally
recognized ones. The galleries offer a
unique blend of artwork that reflects
the character and flavor of the area.
You will find that character to be
sophisticated and to represent the
cultures, terrain and wildlife which
make Idaho such a great place to visit.
As with its art galleries, Boise also has
an abundance of antique stores and
vintage collectible shops. Whether you
are looking for a unique grandfather
clock or African artifacts, American
country furniture or Depression-era
glassware, Art Deco or Victorian,
primitives or native creations, books
or old trunks, pressed glass or
carnival glass, there’s a place in the
Treasure Valley just waiting for you
to make your own “special find.”
Spend some time browsing in the
Hyde Park historic district, downtown
Boise and some of the outlying areas.
Remember, most antique and
collectible stores are closed on
Sunday and Monday. It’s best to
call ahead and make sure that the
shop you want to visit is open. If
it is… it’s time to go antiquing.
The choices are numerous in Boise. View works
in a variety of media from over 42 artists at
the Art Source Gallery or visit Blanche-Laura
France’s gallery to see more of her work like the
painting to the right.

boise river greenbelt
The Greenbelt concept was originated by Boise civic and political
leaders to protect the quality of and assure public access to the Boise
River. Designed as a linear park for leisure and recreational use, the
Greenbelt is enjoyed by Boiseans and the city’s visitors of all ages. The
path follows the banks of the Boise River from downtown, stretching
through the Boise Valley from the Glenwood Bridge on the west to
Lucky Peak State Park on the east. It incorporates approximately 25
miles of paved and unpaved pathway. Mile markers along the path are
1/2 mile apart and are numbered consecutively from the Base or Zero
marker at the Capitol Boulevard Bridge.
The Greenbelt accommodates walkers, bikers, skaters, joggers,
runners, wildlife observers and fishermen. As you stroll the Greenbelt,
take time to enjoy any of the twelve parks connected by the path.
Many offer picnic areas, playgrounds, open spaces for kite flying or
impromptu football games and public restrooms. Bike rentals are
available from Bikes 2 Boards (208-343-0208). In-line skates can be
rented from Newt & Harold’s Boards & Skates (208-385-9300) or Wheels
R Fun (208-343-8228). The path and parks are all wheelchair accessible.
A popular summertime activity in Boise is floating the river by inner
tube, raft, kayak or canoe from Barber Park into the city. People of all
ages can cool down while enjoying a few hours of total relaxation.
Tubes and rafts can be rented seasonally at the put-in location, Barber
Park from Epley’s River Rentals (208-577-4584). Shuttle service between
the put-in and take-out points is available for a small cost.
Wildlife lovers enjoy the Greenbelt year-round. Ducks, geese, great
blue heron and many species of songbirds can be seen along the entire
length of the path. The sight of bald eagles wintering along the river is
an added treat for trail-users. For the practiced observer, beaver, grey
fox and muskrat can also be seen.

Idaho’s Wine Country
Idaho wineries range from very small,
by-appointment-only cellars, to larger
wineries open for tours and tastings
year-round. Southwest Idaho currently
boasts 17 wineries spread across its
fertile volcanic soils. Here, at the same
latitude as the famed wine regions of
France, Idaho vintners are producing
award winning wines. In fact, in March
2007, the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax
and Trade Bureau designated Idaho’s
Snake River Valley as an American
Viticulture Area (AVA) - an important
distinction that brands the southern
portion of the state as America’s next
great wine region. For more information
about Southwest Idaho wineries, call
455-8354 or visit www.idahowines.org.
Snake River Birds of Prey
National Conservation Area
Just southwest of Boise lies an 80-mile
stretch of the Snake River Canyon.
day trips
This wildlife refuge protects one of the
world’s densest concentrations of nesting
birds of prey. Falcons, eagles, hawks, owls
and other raptors hunt, nest and raise
their young here each spring. Spring and
early summer mornings are the best time
to visit, but you’re sure to catch sight
of at least some birds all year round.
Tour information, maps and brochures
are available from the Bureau of Land
Management, which administers
the Birds of Prey Area. A half-mile
interpretive trail is located at Dedication
Point where the road nears the canyon
rim. Guided tours and float trips are
also available through the Outfitters
and Guides Association. (For further
information call 1-800-49-IDAHO.)
Take I-84 west to exit 44, travel eight
miles south to Kuna, then follow the Swan
Falls Road for another 12 miles. Picnic
facilities and a boat ramp are located on
the canyon floor at Swan Falls Dam. For
information call the BLM at 384-3300
or visit www.birdsofprey.blm.gov.
Idaho’s Wine Country has begun to catch national attention with its recent Snake River Valley
American Viticulture Area designation.
Celebration Park
Just a one-hour drive southwest of
Boise, this former wintering ground
for the Paiute Indians features a large
concentration of petroglyphs and
campsites. Learn the history of this
nomadic tribe at the visitor center or

Silver City and the Owyhees
Silver City, established in 1864, is
another well-preserved ghost town.
Nestled in the Owyhee Mountains
south of Boise, more than 70 historic
buildings still stand where a boom
town once rumbled with silver miners,
gamblers and other fortune-seekers.
Stop at The Idaho Hotel for food and
beverages and tour other historic
structures like the Post Office, Drug
Store and the School House Museum.
Silver City is only accessible May
through September when the snows are
off the Owyhees and the 20-mile gravel
road is passable. Turn west at the Silver
City sign five miles south of Murphy
on Highway 78. On the way, stop in at
Murphy’s Owyhee County Museum,
which includes a homestead cabin,
stamp mill, railroad depot and one-room
schoolhouse. For further information call
495-2319 or visit www.ghosttowns.com.
Old Fort Boise &
Warhawk Air Museum
For history buffs, there are two
attractions which can easily be
combined into one trip. These are the
Warhawk Air Museum at Nampa and
the replica of Old Fort Boise at Parma.
The Warhawk Air Museum is located
at the Nampa Municipal Airport and
contains a great collection of WWII
vintage planes and war memorabilia.
To reach the museum go west from
Boise on I-84 to the first Nampa exit
and follow local signage to the airport.
For information call 465-6446 or visit
www.warhawkairmuseum.org.
To reach Old Fort Boise get back on
I-84 and continue west to the Parma exit
and proceed west on Highway 20/26
to the edge of Parma. Old Fort Boise is
an exact replica of the original trading
post built on the Snake River, near
present-day Parma, by the Hudson’s
Bay Company in 1834. It provided
supplies and protection for pioneers
traveling the Oregon Trail. Today, this
museum includes a pioneer cabin,
schoolroom and blacksmith’s shop.
