After a winter that wouldn't seem to end our 2013 Hike for Hospice committee was a little worried about snow melt on the trails of our new location at Kerry Wood Nature Centre. Literally a week before hike we still had snow on the trail, but Executive Director Brenda Watts, BA Psych. 403-309-4344 Ext. 102 Nurse Manager Tara Nielsen, RN, BScN, CHPCA(c) 403-309-4344 Ext. 103 Fund Development & Marketing Coordinator Marian Cloutier 403-309-4344 Ext. 108 Bereavement Support Coordinator Simone Schumacher, BScN, CT 403-309-4344 Ext. 105 Events Coordinator Lori Dufresne 403-309-4344 Ext. 109 on Hike Day, May 5th, the temperature soared to 28 degrees encouraging 200 hikers to come out and hit the trails. The trail did offer hikers another challenge however. A storm in the days prior brought down a tree across the trail that city workers were unable to remove prior to Hike. Our hikers were great sports about this obstacle though, as they navigated a trail that was already the most challenging in Hike for Hospice history. Our new location at Kerry Wood Nature Centre offered two routes: a paved, 1 km wheel chair friendly route and the more challenging 4 km trail through The Sunshine Walkers give Hike for Hospice 2013 a thumbs-up! Just ask Sherri Doyle who came to Hospice on May 24, 2013 with her Outreach Worker carrying six very large, soft and colorful knit blankets, which she donated to the Hospice residents to enjoy and stay warm. Sherri worked very hard throughout the fall and winter knitting square after square of yarn. But she didn't know how to put them all together so she handed all of the squares over to Sharon, a Service Coordinator at Catholic Social Services, who crocheted them into the beautiful blankets that you see in the photo. Last year, Sherri donated a number of her blankets to the Red Deer Hospital. She is taking the summer off though to spend more time enjoying the outdoors. But in the fall, when the leaves start falling, Sherri will again get out her knitting needles to create another large colorful stack of knit squares. She hasn't decided where she will donate next year's blankets to, but we are so excited that she chose us this time. Our residents are thoroughly enjoying them! Thank you so much Sherri for your donation to the Hospice. Sharing your time and talents with us, as well as your thoughtfulness and kindness is truly appreciated! The residents and staff from the Hospice would like to give a great big thank you to all of the massage therapists from the Alberta Institute of Massage who treated us to muscle relaxation therapy. Each Tuesday from March through June, two students alternated coming to Hospice, where they worked towards completion of their 1000 hours of practicum time. We would like to thank: Chantelle, Tabby, Melissa, Rita, Paula, Tiana, Michelle, Dawn and Tessa. The students expressed that they loved coming to the Hospice as much as we loved having them here. As Dawn commented, “the atmosphere here at the Hospice is wonderful!” Handmade with Love We would like to give a big thank you to the Central Alberta Quilters Guild for their donation of quilted placemats. Placemats are used on a daily basis on each resident's tray for all of their meals. Every placemat is different and their beautiful colours really make the trays more attractive. They are also a very practical gift, as the dishes and cutlery don't slide around on the tray, and they are easily laundered after each use. So thank you to the quilters for their t i m e , e ff o r t s a n d sharing their talents with us! BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT PROGRAMS Community Connections H.E.A.R.T.S. CONGRATULATIONS to Tara Veer and Bryan Senn for winning the technical award and to Terry Loewen and Natalie Brooks for winning the overall dance competition! Thank you so much to ALL our Dancers and Instructors for raising over $200,000, but a very special Thank You to Terry Loewen for raising the most money! The event was an unprecedented success!! We are very proud of and grateful to all our dancers and instructors for rising to the challenge and putting their best foot forward for Hospice! As so eloquently stated by another of our corporate sponsors, Russ Wlad of Stantec, “Your hard work to raise funds while investing your blood, sweat and tears in preparation of the event is a true sign of your dedication to our community. Each of you embody the hands-on, volunteer spirit that make Red Deer and Central Alberta a special place to live and work.” Please watch for announcements regarding next year's event via our website, www.reddeerhospice.com, or our Facebook page. Thoughts from our Executive Director As I searched for a quote to begin this newsletter article I never dreamt that I would be quoting Taylor Swift, however she said it best when she claimed, “This is a new year. A new beginning. And things will change.” To date 2013 has been a year of new beginnings and change for Red Deer Hospice and we are not even half way through! We welcome three new staff to our administration team. A new position, Event Coordinator, was introduced in early March. Lori Dufresne hit the floor running just four days before our spring Gala and then immediately turned her focus to Hike for Hospice, an event that was a tremendous success again this year. Lori's focus has once again shifted and we look forward to a new format for Voices for Hospices this fall. It's great to have Lori on our team and to witness the new energy she brings to our events. Linda Murray joined our staff as Administrative Coordinator in April and has been busy learning the numerous tasks this position demands. Welcome Linda, we love having you as part of our team! In May we welcomed Tara Left to Right: Lori Dufresne, Tara Nielsen, Linda Murray Nielsen as Nurse Manager. We are sad that Cheri Purpur had to step away for a one year's leave of absence due to health challenges, but we are thrilled to be working with Tara and appreciate her energy, experience and ideas. Three very positive additions to our team, three very big changes! In the middle of all the staff changes, we very proudly announced the unprecedented success of our spring gala, Celebrity Dance-Off 2013 'Viva Las Vegas.' Thank you to the Dancers, Dance Instructors, Gala Cabinet, supporters, volunteers, staff and all the attendees who made this event so successful. Together we produced a fundraising event of new proportions for Red Deer and we're excited to begin work to make next year's Gala just as spectacular. And if all that didn't constitute enough change, it has become apparent that as we approach the end of eight years of operations, we need to do a makeover of our hospice home. We recognize the wear and tear of high traffic flow on our facility and furnishings. The scratched and dented walls need to be fixed and the worn and torn furniture replaced. We will be reaching out over the next many weeks as we bring our home up to current health standards and provide a facelift to the entire facility. “… a new year. A new beginning. And things will change.” 2013 at Hospice has certainly included change - new staff, incredibly successful events and a hospice home make-over. Thank you Central Alberta for your continued support. Have you ever said to yourself, “I wished I had known that person – she seemed like a lovely lady”. Blessed with good health up until the last couple years of life, Maline enjoyed her time spent at West Park Lodge – even though when she first arrived she said “I'll stay one night.” I think the smile on Maline's face says it all – she was always laughing and was very friendly and outgoing. Born in the small hamlet of Dubuc, Saskatchewan, in 1920, Written by Marian Cloutier Maline grew up with 5 brothers and 2 sisters. She and her husband Ed only had one child, Garry, who unfortunately died in 1969. It is not sure what year Maline and Ed married, but they lived a long life together with Ed passing away when Maline was around 86 years old. Maline continued to care for herself in her own home with the help of Home Care, until the age of 89 when she moved to West Park Lodge. Both people that I interviewed confirmed that Maline was an avid cross-country skier and loved this sport right up to the age of 84! However, she often referred to the activity as skating. According to Linda, cross-country skiing was what she did when it was too cold to golf. She would walk the entire course, saying it was too beautiful and people shouldn't use those machines. She golfed until she was in her 80's. Even after she gave up skiing and golfing, she continued to walk everyday. There was a school across the street from their house and she would walk the field at the school. What does your Will say about you? Smiling Maline at her home in West Park Lodge. One of her last big travel adventures when I found out that one of our was a trip to Vancouver Island for a family reunion when she Hospice Volunteers, Candy Moorhead, is also a friend of was 100 years old. But she doesn't travel too far nowadays, Edie's. Candy came with me on my most recent visit, just out to the car when her daughter Eunice comes to pick her although she has been visiting Edie for many, many years up. now. Candy was first introduced to Edie through her Mom, Edie has four children – three daughters and a son. Edie again has a quick and concise answer, “My brother-inlaw and two nephews have used the Hospice in Calgary, so when one was built in Red Deer, I decided to start supporting it, knowing what a vital need it is for the community”. In fact, Edie has supported Hospice since before it was even built, with a first donation back in 2006. Today, over seven years later, Edie is still giving. Her usual practice is to give a donation every time a friend dies, so as much as we love her support, we know too, that each donation comes from her heart and from the fact that she has lost another friend. Even though we do not know when the time will be, we hope that we will have the privilege and honour to care for Edie when she needs us. After all, she deserves it!
