I invite you to make a list of questions your children (or you) ask at the Seder table, or a list of questions you would like to discuss at your table. We are all familiar with the four children of the Passover Seder – the wise, the cynical, the simple, and the one who does not know how or what to ask. I Even as we pray that the prophet Elijah will come and suggest we keep in mind the 5th Child, the one who does herald the era on earth when everything is as it should not care enough to ask questions! be, so do we pray that the 5th child and her parents will come “home” understanding that her participation is There are children today – between the ages of 13 and vital not only to her own sense of being, but to the 120 – who have no connection to Judaism’s rich essence of all generations within the Household of Israel. religiously cultural Heritage. They feel no connection following the Bat/Bar Mitzva experience. I think of the mother who fought with her son about studying for his special service. One day the child came in with a positive — Rabbi Rick Sherwin attitude, studying and chanting the selections with a [email protected] smile. I asked him about the change. His response: “My mom promised that as soon as I get through my Bar Mitzva I will never have to step foot in a synagogue again.” This is the 5th child, the one whose parents will resign from the congregation as soon as the service is over, who never bring their children to a non-Bar Mitzva Shabbat service, who will not attend a Megila reading or enjoy a meal in the Sukka, who will not enjoy a felafel and get a taste of Israel. They might hear the Shofar out of a sense of “tradition” and leave immediately, or enjoy a brief Passover Seder with only the story and dinner, but not the philosophy of freedom. Rabbi Rick, We must model for our children that Judaism is a rich tradition that goes beyond simple rituals and familiar Thank you so much for visiting Hillel, and introducing Hebrew words. Following a meeting with the Volunteer coordinator, Fran Gelfand and Norma Greenberg rallied the troops and put together monthly support teams. The Pearlman Pantry provides emergency food assistance to Central Floridians who are hungry. Over the years, they have provided 80,000 meals to people in need. Since this is an emergency pantry, once a person or family has received support, there is a six month waiting period until assistance can be provided again. In a nutshell, the pantry provides emergency food for immediate needs and then refers the client to other food sources to ensure ongoing support. The pantry provides two full bags of food. The food consists of meats, bread, canned goods, cereal, pastas, dried milk, produce and desserts. This is not a kosher pantry and is open to people of all faiths. Members of the Mitzvah Brigade have been volunteering on a monthly basis. At one time, teams were going twice a month. Due to availability of support help, the teams now provide assistance on the last Monday of every month. The teams are made up of CBA members who work on a rotating schedule. They assist the employees at the pantry for two hours in the afternoon. The work is not very challenging but proves to be very rewarding. Workers are asked to fill shopping bags based on a list of available food, give out the food bags to the people who come to the pantry, stock the shelves, weigh food when a private donation arrives and check food for expiration dates. BOOK & MOVIE CLUB When Comedy Went to School is the next movie to be watched and discussed by the CBA Book &Movie Club. “Why are there so many Jewish comedians? This movie answers this question with an entertaining portrait of this country's greatest generation of comics – the generation that includes the likes of Jerry Lewis, Sid Caesar, Jackie Mason, Mort Sahl, and Jerry Stiller, all of whom make appearances in the film, telling jokes and telling their stories. The answer is also found in upstate New York's Catskill Mountains, aka the Borscht Belt, where Jewish immigrants transformed lush farmland into the 20th century's largest resort complex. “ We will meet on Thursday April 16, 2015 at 7 PM at the home of one of our members. We welcome anyone who would like to join us. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP for planning purposes only. Hope to see you there! Norma Greenberg ([email protected]) MEN’S CLUB Sunday Connection Hosted by the CBA Men’s Club Sunday, March 29th at 10 am Professor Rich Gair will speak about his experience Our synagogue has always been supportive of the pantry. During the holidays, members have donated bags of nonperishable food items and now we are stepping up our game. In preparation for Passover, an effort was made to collect food items which might otherwise be thrown away. Thank you to all who supported the Pre-Passover Chametz Dinner. What can you do to help with this project? It is simple! Please contact Norma Greenberg and let her know that you would like to join one of the support teams. Service was a bit on the slow side, but the food makes up for it. We tried the falafel and it was probably some of the best I've ever had; really well done. The homemade beef soup was very nice, loaded with chunks of meat and vegetables. It reminded me of the soups my grandmother used to make. Good flavor and definitely homemade. Max had the shwarma wrap and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the mixed plate, which is a sample platter of shwarma, falafel, grilled chicken tenders, kibbe, and an Israeli salad, all of which were very tasty and of excellent quality. The shwarma had a very subtle curry flavor which I really enjoyed. The sample plate has enough food for two. Kosher Grill’s hot tea was a pleasant surprise. It is prepared with a fresh mint plant left to steep in scalding water, which was wonderful. It was so unusual and really worth trying. All other beverages are bottled. The portions are substantial and the prices are what you would expect for a kosher restaurant on International Drive. The staff is very friendly and most of them are Sabras, so English is not their primary language. That being said, they really want you to feel like you are at home and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The decor is modern and they have a small area where they sell packaged Israeli food. We would definitely go back. Come early to avoid the crowds. The food was worth the trip.
