They died in an airplane crash some 8 years later. In 1964 my mom and dad, Dick and Eleanor Leech, took over the restaurants, the kids and everything else. Back in ’64 there was the original Congdon’s take out stand in Wells, a sit down, full service restaurant right next door called “The Pancake Room” and another seasonal take out store on Route One in Ogunquit. I remember the Ogunquit store as a kid and it had this huge awning that covered a bunch of picnic tables right up to Route One. The pancake room sat right where the office is for the Nautical Mile Condo’s which is right next to Congdon’s. The original building that housed the Pancake Room was moved and is now part of my personal home. The Pancake Room ran for over 25 years with breakfast anytime as it’s main theme. There were over 24 different kinds of pancakes available including lobster and clams. The restaurant was open seasonally for breakfast and lunch for a few year was even open for dinner. ServSafe Training Recently 8 staffers completed ServSafe training mandated by the state of Maine. All food service sites are required to have a certified employee on site. This review is a great way to stay up on any new regulations and helps keep the entire staff aware of safe food handling. In 2014 Over 100,000 farm fresh eggs Over 40,000 slices of bacon Over 800,000 doughnuts By our best calculations we should be coming up to our 1,000,000,000 (that’s 1 billion) doughnuts this year!! Open Mondays We expand our schedule to include Mondays starting school vacation week. April 20th will be our first one of the new reason. Open Thursdays through Monday 6am -3pm Do you remember? April 4, 1979 some 36 years ago is when the old Congdon’s blew up in a propane explosion. Thankful no one was hurt that day even with the glass and debris everywhere. Leadership Graduates We recently had 6 staffers graduate from our leadership training in our bakery. Zach, Amber, Marie, Hailey, Ali, and Adriana had extensive training on customer service, systems, understanding the accounting part of a business and even what to do when things aren’t going well. This hands on; real life training was handled very by all 6 of these young adults. I was very impressed with their input, engagement and willingness to learn. You can be assured that these young folks will be great leaders in whatever career paths they choose. This program is completely free to all participants and revolves around a 5 to 6 day stay. Crunch, my three legged golden retriever is doing well. Missing that 4 th leg has slowed him down in some ways but for the most part he’ll still chase the birds and squirrels. Mind you he’s never caught one and truthfully I don’t think he’d know what to do if he did. I love taking Crunch to the beach this time of year. Without the tourists he has the beach to himself and a few sea gulls. For the most part the gulls will ignore him unless he gets too close. He’ll still take wide swings running down the beach and occasionally looking back to keep me in his sight. He still loves running into the water even if it’s cold. Oh that Crunch. Who’s the Favorite? Many folks are interested in all kinds of Congdon’s trivia. From which is the favorite flavor, to how many do we make on a busy day, to how do you get that crispy exterior and a soft interior all in one doughnut. Congdon’s by the numbers: Check it out on the web at www.CampSunshine.org. Camp Sunshine sits on the shores of Sebago Lake and resembles a Disney Resort. While at times a little emotional the bonds and friendships that engage everyone every week is not something you soon forget. On a busy summer day we’ll make between 7,000 to 8,000 doughnuts a day. When we had 2 outlet stores at Wells Beach and Kennebunk we could make over 10,000 doughnuts a day. The favorites have changed some over the years… honey dip, raspberry filled and straight up plain have always been the top sellers but since the introduction of fritters back in 2000, this one has taken doughnut lovers taste buds by storm. March Answer: Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy Where in the world is this? A free doughnut if you know! Tips To Stay In Good Shape Aaaachooooo! A healthy lifestyle isn’t that hard to achieve. Start with these basic tips for getting into good shape and staying there: The allergy season is upon us, creating misery for more than 35 million people. Here are some tips for alleviating allergy attacks caused by pollen and mold: • Energy. For more energy that lasts longer, avoid sugar and eat foods like lentils, soybeans, couscous, and dried fruits. • Water. Make sure that you drink plenty of water every day to replenish and cleanse your body. • Happiness. Pop a single chocolate kiss into your mouth. They’ve been shown to raise endorphin levels and make you feel better. Just don’t go overboard; a full bag won’t make you feel any better than just one. • Digestion. Add some ginger to your recipes. Ginger has been used since ancient times in China to help digestion and cleanse the body. • Exercise. After age 30, people begin to lose muscle mass, and weight-bearing exercises become increasingly important. • Nutrition. Eat 1 cup of yogurt per day. In one study, women who ate 1 cup of yogurt per day for six months got fewer yeast infections. • Keep your windows closed at night. Use air conditioning, which cleans, cools, and dries the air. • Minimize early morning activities outdoors between5 and 10 a.m. This is the time of day when pollen is most prevalent. • Keep your car windows closed when you drive. • Take a vacation during the height of the pollen season. Pick a place that’s more pollen-free, like the beach or the sea. • Take the medications prescribed by your allergist. • Don’t spend too much time outdoors when the pollen count, humidity, or wind factor is high. • Avoid raking leaves or mowing lawns, which stirs up molds and pollens. Delegate these tasks to someone who isn’t allergic. • Don’t hang sheets or clothing out to dry. Pollens and molds may collect on these items. • Don’t grow too many indoor plants. Wet soil is a breeding ground for molds. CONGDON'S DOUGHNUTS FAMILY RESTAURANT U.S. Route One 1090 Post Rd.
