In colours Florence — orange (350) and Gooseberry — green (219). It’s recommended to knit on 4mm needles but for toys we find it’s better to knit a firmer tension and so take the needles down to a 3.25mm. Carrot piece Using orange yarn and 3.25mm needles, cast on 20 stitches and purl one row. Next row: *K1, M1, repeat from * to end (30 sts), then work 5 rows in st. st. starting with a purl row. **K2tog at each end of next row, then work 3 rows in st. st. starting with a purl row, repeat these 4 rows 2 times more and then the decrease row once again (22 sts), then purl one row. Continue in stocking stitch decreasing 1 stitch at each end of every Knit row until 2 sts remain and cast off remaining 2 stitches. Making-up and Greenery With right side of carrot piece facing you, join green yarn to top right edge stitch of carrot. Using this stitch from the carrot piece as your starting point, cast on 20 sts loosely with the green yarn and then cast them off tightly. Do not break off yarn. By casting on loosely and casting off tightly you are creating the curl in the carrot leaves. Then knit into third st. at top of carrot and cast on 20 sts loosely then cast off tightly. Continue in this way to the end of the top of the carrot and until 10 green leaves have been knitted evenly along this edge. With right side of work facing, and using orange yarn, neatly weave the row edges of the carrot closed. Leave the top open. Stuff the carrot putting rattle in last at the top to keep the top shape of the carrot firm. Gather the cast-on edge of the carrot and close tightly. Fasten off neatly. © 2011 Hathay Bunano ps www.pebblechild.com You will also need a small amount of polyester toy filling and a 4cm round toy rattle. hand made │ fair trade │ naturally distributed in the US by Kahiniwalla – kahiniwalla.com
