April 20, 2015 Subject: Oppose efforts to transfer control of national public lands Dear CO State Senators and Representatives, We, the undersigned businesses, urge you to oppose legislative efforts to transfer or sell off Colorado’s national public lands. Public lands are a major driver of our outdoor recreation and tourism economy in Colorado, which generates over $13 billion in spending a year and supports over 122,000 jobs. The huge cost to the state of managing these lands would lead to greatly increased development and a loss of access that would put our businesses at risk, damage our economy, and diminish our uniquely Coloradan way of life. Access to public lands draws locals and travelers alike into our businesses while helping us attract and keep good employees. Over 70% of Colorado voters - including us- agree that tourism and outdoor recreation is an important part of our economy, and know that our public lands belong to all Americans, not just Colorado. Public land seizures and the resulting closures would not only hurt our businesses, but also deny Americans our shared heritage and identity by locking us out of our most treasured landscapes. For the above reasons, we urge you to oppose any legislative action to transfer or sell off our national public lands to the state or private interests. These lands belong to all of us, and are crucial to the success and growth of our businesses.
