Miandetta Primary Newsletter – 11 December, 2012 From the Principal Achievements - We have two great achievements featured in our newsletter today. Congratulations to Mrs Ruffels for her co-ordination of our finger knitting challenge. Through her dedication and perseverance and the contributions of numerous student knitters we have broken the world record! Details of this feat further on in the newsletter. Another first for our school in recent history – Miss Reeves and the student council entered a float in the Devonport Christmas Parade on Friday evening with a ‘12 Days of Summer theme’. Hopefully the photos capture our Australian theme and friendly wavers (couldn’t capture the singing voices). I have included the 12 Days of Summer verse for your enjoyment! After the parade, Hayden Adams and Ella Woodberry presented our wonderful Christmas panel to the mayor which is now proudly on display around the Christmas tree in the Mall. Volunteer Morning Tea - Last week we held our annual volunteer morning tea. It was wonderful to be able to recognise the significant efforts of our volunteers, who generously donate their time and skills to support our students. Unfortunately many of our helpers were unable to attend so I’d like to thank you in print. We have over 150 people who assist us in a variety of ways; as classroom support, library helper, member of committees, gardener, fundraiser, literacy tutor, canteen helper, banker, sports coach and the list continues. Thankyou. You make a huge contribution to our school and are wonderful models of citizenship for our students. We value the support of everyone who has assisted and look forward to welcoming volunteers again in 2013. Congratulations - Last week Baynen Lowe represented the North West Coast athletic squad at the PSST championships. He performed extremely well coming 3rd in the State final of the 800m. Congratulations Baynen on your fantastic effort. Grade 6 Orientation Day - On Tuesday of last week our grade 6 students visited their high schools for orientation. These days are a great opportunity to meet students from other schools and the teachers they will be working with next year. Reports suggest our students enjoyed their day and are looking forward to next year. D e p a r t me nt of E d uc a t ion End of Year Reports - These will be sent home with students tomorrow, Wednesday I2 December for all classes except for Kinder Chilcott who will receive theirs on Thursday 13 December. 2012 Classes - Our class structures for next year have been confirmed as follows: Kinder (2 classes) Grade Prep (1 class) Grade P/1 (2 classes) Grade 1/2 (1 class) Grade 2 (1 class) Grade 3/4 (3 classes) Grade 4/5 (1 class) Grade 5/6 (2 classes) Your child’s class and teacher will be advised on Monday 17 December, subject to confirmation of staffing from HR. Our staffing has yet to be finalised. Teachers and senior staff have met on a number of occasions to consider class placements. These processes are very complex. Balance has to be maintained across class sizes, sibling placements, male/ female numbers, ability, behaviour issues, friendships, social/ emotion issues and any parent information provided. We appreciate your support. Students will visit their new classrooms next Wednesday afternoon and in most circumstances meet their 2013 teacher/teachers. Big Day Out and End of Year Assembly - Its hard to believe our 2012 school year is nearly over and within the next week there are two significant events for our forty one Grade 6 students. On Thursday they attend the Big Day Out in Launceston and on Tuesday we say farewell at our final assembly. The assembly will begin at 11.15am and conclude around 12.30pm. We will be reserving some front seating for the parents of our grade 6 students. The multipurpose room will not be open until 10.45am. As this is a public event, photos and videos may be taken. However, a message from our legal services area; these can only be used for private and domestic purpose, not posted on social media sites such as Facebook and You Tube. Thankyou. School Picnic - We will celebrate the end of the school year with our picnic at the Latrobe Pool on Thursday 20 December from 10am - 2pm (weather permitting). Students will need: suitable casual clothes including a hat, a rash shirt or t-shirt that covers the shoulders, bathers, towel and a plastic bag for wet items, snacks, drink bottle and lunch – if not ordered. Please ensure all personal items are clearly named. Class sunscreen will be available for students to use. However if you prefer, you may provide your own sunscreen. Parents are welcome to join us at the pool for this end of year event. Alternate arrangement will be made if there is inclement weather. Mandy Beard On Friday the 7th of December, the Student Council entered the Devonport Christmas Parade with an Aussie, Christmas themed float. The Student Council (were on the float) sang the song The 12 Days of Summer. Miandetta's float came first in the schools division and we would like to thank Miss Reeves, Mrs Hill, SERVE-AG and everyone else who has contributed in the float. Finger Knitting Update! On Saturday the large ball of finger knitting was unrolled and measured at the Reece High School gym. After completing 193 and a half laps of the gym we finally had our accurate measurement to submit to Guiness World Records. The previous record set last year by an American school was 9 kilometres, 86 metres and 72 centimetres. Our final measurement is 16 kilometres, 665 meters and 57 centimetres!! WE HAVE DONE IT!! Congratulations to everyone in the school community who has contributed by finger knitting, donating wool or helping to measure the knitting at the end. It was a massive effort by you all. Miandetta Primary School will be known worldwide and be a part of history. A special thank you to the following families and staff members who helped to measure the mammoth ball on Saturday: Angela, Eve, Meg and Alice Sutton, Georgina, Abbey, Sam and Lee Bonfield, Mrs Adams, Miss Reeves, Miss Clayton, Ms Dowie, Mrs Thomas and Mr and Mrs Somers. We could not have done this without Craig from Braddon Building Surveying. Craig gave up his time on the weekend to ensure that we had precise measurements and to act as a witness to our amazing effort. Thank you also to Reece High School who allowed us to use their gymnasium over the weekend. The finger knitting has yet to be rolled back up. This is going to take some time. Once it is complete it will be placed near the multipurpose room hopefully with our world record certificate. All of the documentation will be sent by mail to London this week, so it won’t be until next year that we will officially be told that we are the new world record holders for the longest finger knitting by a team! Mrs Ruffels During term three, P/1R have been using two litre milk containers to build an igloo as part of a maths investigation. Here are some facts that we found out: Altogether we had 629 milk containers. We counted the different coloured lids and this is what we had: 195 dark blue, 55 yellow, 47 red, 47 white, 32 light blue, 9 green and 2 brown which equals 387 lids. Instead of counting how many didn’t have lids we had a go at finding the difference between the amount of lids and the total amount of milk containers. The answer was 242 milk containers without lids. Our igloo can also hold 10 students!! We would like to say a special thank you to Izobel’s mum Sonia who collected many of the containers from Anvers and even washed them out for us - THANK YOU! A reminder for all raffle books, sold or unsold to be returned to the office by this Thursday at the latest. Thank you to all families who have already donated. Christmas Stall This week on Thursday and Friday after school there will be a Christmas stall held in the multi purpose room. Stocking fillers will be available for purchase ranging from $1 - $5. Come along and grab a bargain! RSPCA Visit This was a great success last Wednesday with most classes getting the opportunity to view a presentation by Andrea Carne, the state Community Engagement Manager. Andrea was impressed with our student’s respect for animals and their level of interest in caring for them. Andrea personally delivered our donations to the Devonport RSPCA shelter. The staff was very excited to receive our gifts and said the animals there would think it is Christmas already! Thank you to all families who sent along donations to this worthy cause. School Banking - Reminder There is only a small number of school banking days left: Friday14 December and Tuesday 18 December. Miandetta Sports Uniforms - Reminder With Spring rosters finishing in the coming week, all sports uniforms and tops need to be returned to the school office in a good condition. Thank you. Thank you. Get Moving Tasmania Last Friday at our Principal’s Assembly, the school was presented with a certificate to recognise our participation in the 2012 Medibank Active Tasmania Awards. On behalf of the school Mrs Adams had nominated our “Golden Foot” program as an entrant in this year’s awards. While Miandetta Primary was not a winner, the certificate we received recognises our efforts, along with 61 other programs set up in schools around Tasmania, with the aim of promoting healthier and more active students. Well Done! Term Dates ~ 2013 - Reminder Term 1: 5 February - 19 April Golden Foot Winners! Well done to Grade 3/4 AM who have won the Golden Foot trophy for the final time this year. What a massive effort by a dedicated and active team! This class consistently had high numbers of active arrivers throughout the year and in November averaged 14 people coming to school in active ways every day. Prep/One Somers was another outstanding team. Although they didn't win the trophy, having to compete against the power of 3/4AM, this class also maintained a consistent effort throughout the year having excellent averages every month. Well done to all the active arrivers in 2012!
