WEATHERIZING THE BUILDING ENVELOPE
Weatherization is often an area where new product technology has raised more questions than answers. Maybe the perceived simplicity
causes field application to be getting less attention and understanding than it does. Weather resistant barriers, vapor barriers, exterior product
compatibility, moisture issues and installation sequencing all need to be properly understood before any type of housewrap hits the wall. Using
Tyvek housewrap, cedar siding and Henry’s new fully adhered membrane, Pete Heard is on hand to clear a path in understanding and installing
weatherization products. Set aside some well-invested time with Pete so at the end of the day you have more answers than questions.

Simpson Strong Tie - Live Deck Collapse
Many Americans view adding a deck to their home as a simple, do-it yourself project. However,
since 2003, there have been thousands of reported injuries and more than 20 deaths as a result
of deck collapse. To help raise awareness about the prevalence of deck collapse and promote
code-compliant deck construction, Simpson Strong-Tie will stage a live deck collapse onsite. The
demonstration features two side-by-side decks, each 8 ft wide by 6 ft deep and 7 ft tall. Although
the decks look similar, one is safe and the other is not. Come see if you can tell the difference while
learning about the common causes of deck failure and the five warning signs of an unsafe deck.
We also will discuss the critical connections on a safe, code-compliant deck. For more information
about deck safety, visit the Simpson Strong-Tie Deck Center at www.strongtie.com/deckcenter.

W01: Finish Carpentry: Lessons Learned the Hard Way
Part 1
Speaker: Gary Katz | Room 551 | P MT
Join Gary as he discusses in detail the installation of doors, casing,
baseboards and crown molding. You don’t want to miss this 3-hour intensive
session with a specialist in the field of high-end finish carpentry.
W02: Avoiding Costly Construction Mistakes
Speaker: Michael McDowell | Room 552 | P
It is difficult to oversee employees and sub-contractors and errors sometimes
occur. It is important that they are caught and corrected as soon as possible.
Using the building code as one of our guides we will touch upon errors that are
often detected after the fact and learn ways we can prevent them.
W03: Five Metrics for the New Economy
Speaker: Melanie Hodgdon | Room 556 | B
A couple of decades ago, if you had a construction/remodeling company,
it was almost hard to avoid making money. Then came the crash, which
many contractors not only failed to see coming, but couldn’t believe it even
when the work dried up. Driven by a mix of loyalty, hope, and desperation,
some hung onto employees for longer than they should have, many slashed
their prices, and lots changed their target market in an effort to keep selling
work. What metrics could have told them what was happening and how to
cut their losses early in the game? As the economy recovers, learn what
to watch for and how to be sure that, when you ask the questions, the
answers will be available.
W04: Design/Build: Defining the Opportunities
Speaker: Peter Feinmann, CR | Room 557 | B

W07: So It’s Time to Hire a Bookkeeper
Speaker: Melanie Hodgdon | Room 556 | B
If you’ve been in business for a couple of years (or if you’re ramping up
again after downsizing), you may be poised to hire your first key office
employee: a bookkeeper. But what do you really need? In some ways, it’s a
lot easier to hire a carpenter, whose work output and skill set will be right
there in front or your eyes. But office positions involve work that may not
be as simple to define or evaluate. This session will look at the range of
services provided by “bean counter types” from data entry folks to CFO’s.
What should you have in place before you hire or even advertise? What
kinds of questions should you ask during an interview? How can you tell
whether or not they’re doing their job? What can you afford to entrust to
them? How much power and expertise do you need now? What about
down the road?
W08: Strategies for Growth-Oriented Companies
Speaker: Peter Feinmann, CR | Room 557 | B
This session will examine the elements of a growth-oriented company and
strategies for success. We will discuss the signals that you are poised for
growth and the benefits of operating a growth-oriented company. We will
define the critical steps for growth, including hiring, training, and managing
the people on your team. We will answer the question of how to effectively
use your production team, sales team and administrative team. Finally, we
will look at how to manage your limits and expectations. Remodelers will
take away ideas and tools for running a successful and profitable business.

T01: Training Your Production Staff: 5 Steps to Creating
a Dynamic Training Program!
Speaker: Tim Faller | Room 551 | P
Walk out of this seminar with a detailed outline of a training program that
will double efficiency and get your team geared up for profits. I’ll focus
on why training is essential for your company, how to effectively train,
and what training areas are critical for your production staff to master to
achieve a profit.
T02: Understanding, Managing and Mitigating Risk
Speaker: Leslie Shiner, MBA | Room 552 | B
All it takes is one or two bad jobs to destroy the profits from your best jobs.
To prevent risks from sinking your business, you must identify, understand
and quantify the risks that you face—financial, contractual and operational.
Managing risk starts with the estimating process and runs through your
entire work flow, including the effects on your relationships with clients,
subcontractors and employees. This session will equip you with the tools
to manage risk by teaching you how to assess, measure and mitigate risk
and then be able to proceed on your jobs with confidence. Attendees will
leave with a worksheet to learn how to quantify risk.
T03: Common Details - Uncommon eye
Speaker: Steve Baczek | Room 555 | MT
My non-traditional architectural career provides for a different perspective
when looking at common building assemblies, In this session we will use
my experience to scrutinize common building assemblies through the
multiple filters of water management, thermal efficiency, vapor migration,
air tightness, and overall durability. We will discuss the failure modes,
inadequacies, and possible enhancements of common details and develop
options for performance improvement, cost, and durability. Understanding
what the next steps are in a detailing will provide you with the ability to
discuss relevant performance options with your clients.
T04: 5 STEPS TO CLEAR COMMUNICATION
Speaker: David Lupberger | Room 556 | B
Clear communication isn’t by accident. It happens when project details are
shared with everyone. Because of the diverse group of people involved
with our projects, we need to make sure that the homeowner, trade
contractor, and supplier are all “on the same page”. In this course, I review
the 5 steps that will clarify expectations and responsibilities for everyone
associated with a project.
T05: RESIDENTIAL VENTILATION – NEW REQUIREMENTS, NEW
SYSTEMS, NEW ISSUES
Speaker: Mike DuClos | Room 557 | T
Until recently, residential ventilation has consisted mainly of installing
bath fans and kitchen exhaust hoods, but that is changing with the new
code requirements for testing, and with tighter houses driving the need
for balanced ventilation – a novelty in homes until recently. Learn why
something as simple as a bath exhaust fan may not deliver anything close
to the specified air flow, and why this is likely not an issue with the fan.
Ventilation is a real issue to consider, especially in Mass., where homes
permitted after 7/1/2014 must have ventilation flows measured by an
approved 3rd party that meet a written specification – or no Certificate
of Occupancy. See data from exhaust only and balanced ventilation
systems that graphically depict a surprising difference in CO2 levels.
Learn about the two major functions of a balanced residential ventilation
system. Understand why commissioning can result in a smoothly operating
ventilation system, or ‘rip up and redo’ when a balanced system is not
designed to be commissioned – and what “commissioning” means. This
interactive session will feature two stories of ventilation systems gone
wrong, how the issues were diagnosed, and what was done to improve
them after the drywall was installed.
9:30 AM - 12:30 PM
T06: THAT’S UNIVERSAL DESIGN?
Speaker: Bill Owens, CGR, CAPS, CGP | Room 551 | MT
Most designers and builders are still reluctant to include Universal
Design features because the majority of homeowners simply aren’t
asking for them since UD often is confused with accessible design, home
modifications , and aging related issues. As a result, UD in one’s home is
often seen as a “need” instead of a “want”. This course will demonstrate
proven techniques to use in the marketplace that are revolutionizing how
homeowners view the value of UD in their homes. Learn how universal
usability is now being successfully balanced with mainstream marketability,
yielding very intriguing results.
T07: SMALL BUSINESS FINANCES: PROFIT STRATEGIES FOR
NON-ACCOUNTANTS
Speaker: Shawn McCadden, CR, CLC, CAPS | Room 552 | B
Eight of every ten high quality remodeling businesses with raving fans for
clients fail within the first five years. The number one reason contracting
businesses fail is due to a lack of available money when they needed it,
even if they are operating profitably. The number two reason is that they do
not know the costs of being in business. For many Builders or Remodelers
financial management skills are not necessarily part of their educational
background. So what do those who want to succeed need to know? Why
try to figure this stuff out yourself by attending the “Lumberyard School of
Hard Knocks”? Join us for a fun and enlightening discussion to find out.
Our instructor will share some of the simple and successful strategies
contractors use to achieve the financial success they deserve. If earning
and keeping profits is important to you and your business, you need to
attend this down to earth, interactive and easy to follow seminar program.

T08: QUALIFYING PROSPECTS: COULD THIS PERSON BE
WASTING MY TIME?
Speaker: Jason Hartz | Room 555 | SM
Quite often we tend to invest too much time and energy in prospects
that may have no intention of using our service. Subconsciously we may
sabotage our day, climbing the next rung of success, or career by filling
our days with suspects instead of prospects. You have the right to put
as much energy into the sale if the prospect is legitimate. This forum is
designed to help streamline a sale, prevent price shopping/bidding wars,
and comfort zones by stopping the vicious cycle and leave participants
with an actual plan. Given many contractors wear many hats in their own
business time is a commodity that cannot be wasted. Jason will discuss
a particular questioning strategy that will limit free consulting and help
participants look for warning signs. This is a participatory forum that will
require brainstorming and insight from attendees so as to have the material
fit their industry.
T09: ORGANIZING FOR SUCCESS: 5 STEPS TO IMPLEMENT
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES
Speaker: David Lupberger | Room 556 | B
In this program, I take business owners through a systematic 5-step
process to implement “standard operating procedures” within their
company. This is a required step for any owner who wants to lessen
company dependence on them as an owner, and to begin to effectively
delegate day-to-day responsibility. With effective delegation, the owner
can begin to take on more of a “strategic” role within his/her company,
working on the business as well as working in the business. This is a key to
becoming a true business owner.
T10: ALL ABOUT WINDOWS – PERSPECTIVES FROM AN
ARCHITECT AND AN ENGINEER
Speaker: Mike DuClos & Steve Baczek | Room 557 | T MT
This is an updated and expanded version of last year’s very well attended
“All about Windows”.We will review the fundamentals to establish a
window language (adding a few new things) and cover new ground
including Architect Steve Baczek’s perspectives and experience on the
correct (and incorrect) use of windows, and how quality windows are
designed, manufactured and installed. Windows are arguably the most
important architectural element in a home, impacting the appearance,
comfort, energy use, ventilation, cost, maintenance and overall enjoyment
of our homes in a number of ways – some not so obvious. We will present
some new ideas about windows, including how they impact comfort and
home energy use, can supplement a heating system, assisting with ‘passive
survivability’ when the power fails - with real data. We will explain window
construction, performance parameters, and HVAC implications. We’ll
discuss architectural implications of windows, with some very interesting
insights on their design and manufacture. Steve and Mike have worked
together on a wide variety of both new Zero Net, and Passive House
homes, as well as Deep Energy Retrofits of existing homes, including the
first true National Grid Net Zero DER and the first retrofit of an existing
home in the US to meet the Passive House EnerPHit standard, in which
windows played a key role. This will be an interactive workshop, questions
and discussion will be encouraged, so we can all learn together.

Bring every question you’ve ever had on interior wood finishing.
T12: Growing Your Business Without Growing Out of
Business
Speaker: Leslie Shiner, MBA | Room 552 | B
Are you looking to grow? Growth can be good, but sometimes when you
double your sales, your profit is cut in half. The industry today is tiered with
contractors of different sizes, but there are wide gaps between growth
stages. This session will discuss why, as a contractor, you can’t grow
slowly and steadily, but have to make incremental jumps.
T13: Fall Protection OSHA Subpart M
Speaker: Mark Paskell | Room 555 | S
OSHA requires that remodelers, home improvement contractors, builders,
roofers, painters, siding and gutter contractors and trades protect their
workers when they are working at heights of 6 feet or more above a lower
level. Falls are the leading cause of deaths in the construction industry
and OSHA says these deaths are preventable. This three hour seminar will
teach contractors what they need to do to meet the OSHA Fall Protection
requirements in Subpart M.
T14: QuickBooks: Basics and Beyond
Speaker: Melanie Hodgdon | Room 556 | B
Sure, you can pull up a P&L and Balance Sheet, and maybe you’ve even got
a pretty good handle on job costing. But would you like to be able to learn
more about utilizing Quickbooks for your business. Join Melanie and learn
how to squeeze quite a bit more useful stuff out of this flexible software.
T15: Charging for The Estimate
Speaker: Brian Altmann,CAPS | Room 557 | B
Learn how to charge potential clients for estimating and have them happy
to pay you! It is time to become a consultant for hire rather than a free

F02: Hiring Right - Filling your Team with the Right People
HR
Speaker: Leslie Shiner, MBA | Room 552 | B
Having the best field crews and office staff can improve your company’s
effectiveness and profitability. And now that the economy is on the mend,
it is crucial to build your company with the right people. All too often,
contractors waste time and money hiring the wrong people for the wrong
positions. Learn how to create better hiring practices to hire right the first
time. Discover ways to determine if your potential and current employees
are expandable or expendable.
F03: Excel Introduction and Basics
Speaker: Melanie Hodgdon | Room 555 | B
Spreadsheets are powerful tools with multiple uses in the office, from
estimating to creating custom forms. But creating a spreadsheet without
putting the time into the planning process can produce disappointing or
even misleading results. This session mimics the design/build process,
with emphasis on the design portion accompanied by the building of a
basic estimating tool.
F04: Managing the Emotional Homeowner
Speaker: David Lupberger | Room 556 | B
Managing emotional homeowners means managing expectations, and
managing the process as well as the project. In this program, I review how
to clear set project expectations, how to guide homeowners through the
remodeling process, and how to implement specific strategies for managing
homeowners during the remodeling process. Done properly, your customers
become your biggest fans and best source of future referrals.
F05: SIPs 101: Introduction to Structural Insulated
Panels
Speaker: Paul Malko | Room 557 | T MT
Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) have been around since the 1950’s and
are one building material that can be used on a wide variety of building
projects where thermal performance and energy consumption are
priorities. This session will introduce SIP materials, installation, detailing,
and design techniques to allow one to evaluate SIPs as an alternative
material for most light construction projects. This includes the structural
plan, estimating energy performance, and how to work easily with a SIP
vendor. The main goal of the presentation is to demystify SIPs while also
answering several of the most common questions about them.

F06: HouseWrap Update: Good - Better - Best Strategies
for WRB’s
Speaker: Matt Risinger | Room 551 | MT
When the mold crisis hit the US in 2002 I was caught flat-footed. I was
building houses with ThermoPly sheathing at that time, and would silicone
my windows in place then Tyvek Tape the flanges. Well, as you can image
the pain of buying a few houses back from their owners changed my
strategy on moisture management. Fast forward to 2015 and I’ve used and/
or tested just about every product on the marketplace. In this session I’ll
outline what I consider good/better/best practice products/methods to
weather resistive barriers (WRB’s). We’ll talk about housewraps, peel &
sticks, and fluid applied WRB’s. I’ll also touch up on Joe Lstiburek’s “Perfect
Wall” concept and a house I completed in 2014 using all peel&stick WRB’s
plus 4-6” of exterior rigid foam.
F07: Marketing for Contractors
Speaker: Kristen Koehler | Room 552 | SM CSL
Contractors and remodelers will learn the fundamentals of creating a basic
marketing presence for their business. Topics will include basic marketing
strategy, web presence, social media, advertising, cultivating word of mouth
as well as other creative ways to develop clientele. Participants will leave with
a checklist of things to do immediately to get their marketing presence started.

Speaker: Tim Faller | Room 555 | P
This seminar gives lead carpenters and contractors an understanding of
the skills necessary for dealing effectively with work crews, subs, and
customers...all with the express purpose of improving company profit. We
will cover practical skills needed to effectively manage the site, personnel,
and hands-on work. Key issues such as cost controls, scheduling, change
orders, and safety are covered as well as overviews on the systems and
paperwork required. Learn management skills and how to apply them
effectively to crew members, subs, inspectors, architects, and clients.
F09: What’s the Next Step For You And Your Business?
Speaker: Shawn McCadden, CR, CLC, CAPS | Room 556 | B
Are you outgrowing your current business model and is crisis management
becoming your modus operandi? You may want to move on to the next
stage of business, but is your business ready to grow? To get better results
from new and remaining employees, most contracting businesses will
need a different organizational structure than the one they were using in
the past. Find out from an industry veteran how to create and maintain an
employee organizational structure that will help your business grow, offer
opportunities to the right employees and at the same time won’t leave you
hanging in the future if you lose employees or have to let employees go.
F10: Making Efficient Buildings Durable
Speaker: Paul Malko | Room 557 | E
Low-energy-use buildings have unique design and detailing needs in order
to make them durable. Reducing the air infiltration and heat transfer through
a building’s walls and roofs reduces the rate at which the building dries
itself. Applying conventional exterior building wraps, weather barriers,
and interior air barriers to a low heat loss building often causes expensive
damage in 5 to 10 years. This session will review a small selection of
the durability problems Mr. Malko has witnessed and techniques will be
presented that have been demonstrated to prevent the issues.
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
F11: How to increase your sales by $5M annually
through Architect Referrals
Speaker: Matt Risinger | Room 551 | SM
When Matt started focusing on his business on Architect referrals in
2008 he realized there was little competition. Most builders or remodeling
contractors simply don’t “play nice” with architects. Now his company
doesn’t spend a dime on advertising and the referrals from architects are
flowing in. This approach isn’t without pitfalls, but it helped Risinger Homes
grow from a one-man operation in 2007 to a 14-man with $20M in the
pipeline for 2015. Matt will share tactics, strategies, and touch on social
media for gaining architect referrals.
F12: Say Hello to Better Living Design
Speaker: Bill Owens, CGR, CAPS, CGP | Room 552 | MT
For over 30 years, proponents of universal design have unsuccessfully
attempted to change homeowners thinking by insisting that UD is something
everyone eventually needs. A completely new approach is to make UD
aspirational through great design, certain transparency and knowledgeable
installation. Learn how Better Living Design is taking a perceived “need”
and successfully redesigning it into a sought after attribute of well-planned
and properly executed residential projects. Finally see how BLD endorsed
homes can be easily achieved by seeing first-hand the qualifying criteria
and associated commentary for BLD Approved Projects.
F13: 2012 Code Update: IRC and IECC

the updates and discuss the experience of Maryland and Massachusetts
builders with the requirements.
F14: Financials Through a Credit Manager’s Eyes
Speaker: Thea Dudley | Room 556 | B
This presentation is a great opportunity to get the small businessman
thinking about how his vendors and bankers see his business. We will
focus on practical information regarding how to make your company more
attractive to lenders, be they a supplier, banker or other investor, and what
credit manager in those industry looks for, and how communication (or lack
thereof) can impact the ability to purchase moving forward.
F15: Exterior Sustainability: Water Doesn’t Always Run
Downhill
Speaker: Matt Whitbeck | Room 557 | MT

trim on a large scale trim replacement project by Topcoat, and Scott offered
finishing tips in the article. This session will drill deeper into the do’s and
don’ts of painting PVC exterior materials. Demonstrations will show how to
apply durable and aesthetically pleasing finishes on PVC exterior materials
with a particular emphasis on prep steps, material selection and surface
maintenance.
F17: Scheduling Made Simple - That Works!
Speaker: Mark Scott CR | Room 552 | P
Would you make more money and get more work done if you could
complete a 14-week project in just 8 weeks? Clients want to be delighted
with the project progress. In this session you will learn how to develop a
scheduling system that everyone understands and everyone can follow.
F18: Classic Home, Modern Consumer
Speaker: Matt Whitbeck | Room 555 | MT

Speaker: Bill Robinson | Room 552 | MT
You already know why managing moisture is important, come see state of
the art details on how to manage moisture in a wet environment. Roofs,
Walls, Floors and everything in between.
S03: Markup and Margin
Speaker: Alan Hanbury Jr,CAPS,CGR,CGP,GMR | Room 555 | B
Knowing your margin and the corresponding markup required to
theoretically make that target are only part of the puzzle. Margin creates
our pricing model and margin depends on our sales volume, overhead costs
and our cost of sales and how much slippage we have in miss cuts, miss
orders, weather etc. This session will deal with the math, how to apply the
concepts to real world situations, the effect of discounts, effect of added
overhead purchases, or even stuff that is out of our control. Learn the steps
to creating a margin target, a markup that incorporates real world issues,
and using margin to better manage business profitability.
S04: Change Orders: Lose Money, Make Money, You Choose!
Speaker: Tim Faller | Room 556 | P
Changes or additional work orders can be money makers or money looser
it just depends on how you handle them. Setting the structure in the
contract, how the field staff interacts with the client, and how the boss
follows through are major factor that define success or failure. Each of
these will be discussed and clear direction for success will be given.
9:00 AM - 10:30 AM
S05: Production Systems You can Implement Now!
B
Speaker: Mark Scott CR | Room 551 | P
