CAMP
REGISTRATION.
Saturday, May 3, 8 a.m. Children ages 5 to 12 take part in
“Passport to JJP,” a four-day educational summer program.
Parent or legal guardian must register in person and provide
identification and child’s birth certificate. Priority is given to
Harris County residents. For camp dates and times visit

CONTEST
RIBBON
PRESENTATION. Saturday, May 3, 1 p.m. Get snapping
and check out this year’s best photos taken in the park at the
presentation of the winners of Jones Park’s 2014 Photo
Contest. Contest entries due Mon., April 28. All ages.
FATHER/CHILD MOTHER’S DAY CRAFT. Saturday,
May 10, 10 a.m. Kids, bring your father or grandfather and
make a handmade Mother’s Day gift. Limit one per family.
Ages 5+. Reservations required beginning Wed., April 30.
SECOND SATURDAY SETTLERS: WOODWORKING.
Saturday, May 10, 1-3 p.m. Volunteers and staff bring the
Homestead to life as they demonstrate woodworking and other
daily activities of early Texas settlers. All ages.
WILDLIFE GARDENS. Saturday, May 17, 9 a.m.-noon.
Learn how local wildlife is relying more on humans for their
habitat, especially the pollinators. Understand the role of
native plants, and tour the Nature Center’s wildlife gardens.
All ages.
FLAGS OF TEXAS. Saturday, June 14, 10 a.m. Did you
know that the Lone Star flag was not the first flag to fly over
Texas? Attend this Flag Day celebration to learn about all six
national flags that have flown over Texas. All ages.
SECOND SATURDAY SETTLERS: SALUTE TO OLD
GLORY. Saturday, June 14, 1-3 p.m. Join park volunteers
and a local scouting group for a flag retirement ceremony,
display of the six national flags of Texas, and a salute to Old
Glory. Also witness some of the daily activities of early Texas
settlers as hands-on demonstrations bring the Redbud Hill
Homestead to life. All ages.
POLLINATORS. Saturday, June 21, 10 a.m. To celebrate
National Pollinator Week, come learn about their importance,
how to attract them to your area, and how you can help ensure
their survival with a presentation by Texas Parks & Wildlife
entomologist and bee expert, Mike Warriner. A tour of the
Nature Center landscape included. All ages.
DRAGONFLY WORKSHOP. Saturday, June 28, 9
a.m.-noon. Join a Citizen Science project to help monitor
the three beautiful migratory dragonflies that move through
this region and, and learn how to identify their characteristics.
Then take a walk to the park’s waterways to practice
photographing and identifying them. All ages.
JULY
SCAVENGER HUNT. Saturday, May 24, 10 a.m. Young
TEXAS BOUND! Wednesday, July 2, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Kids
nature lovers, parents, and scout groups are invited to join this
nature discovery outing. Ages 5-15. Reservations required
beginning Wed., May. 14.

and hands-on activities, day campers join together in
“families” for a journey to Texas. Find out if you have what it
takes to survive the hardships of an earlier period and re-create
a homestead of your own. Ages 7-12. Reservations required

BROWNIE BADGE: SENSES. Saturday, May 31, 9 a.m.noon. Girl Scout Brownies use their five senses to explore
nature and learn how animals also use their senses.

JUNE
NATIONAL TRAILS DAY CREEK BASH. Saturday,
June 7, 9 a.m. Join staff and volunteers to clean up Jones
Park’s waterways. Be prepared to get dirty and wet! Wear
close-toed shoes, no sandals or flip-flops. All ages welcome;
ages 16+ only for canoeing clean-up. Reservations required
beginning Wed., May 28.

WEAPONS & HAWK THROW CONTEST. Saturday,
July 12, 1-3 p.m. Watch as volunteers and staff demonstrate
black powder weapons, tomahawks, and more at Redbud Hill
Homestead. Also take in some of the other daily activities of
early Texas setters. All ages.

PROJECT WILD EDUCATOR WORKSHOP. Saturday,
July 19, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Learn how to teach young people of
TADPOLES CLUB. Wednesdays, May 7, 14, 21, and 28;
Sept. 3, 10, 17 and 24, 10:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. This interactive
all ages about ecology and wildlife using fun, hands-on
educational activities. Receive a TEKS aligned curriculum and
activity guide. TEEAC & SBEC accredited. Bring a lunch and
wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Material’s fee: $30. All

FISH OF SPRING CREEK. Saturday, July 26, 9 a.m.
Wonder what lives in the park’s waterways? Find out during
this wet, hands-on program using dip-nets and seines, and
observe the TPWD electro-shock boat in action. Be prepared
to get muddy and wet! Please wear suitable clothing, closetoed shoes, no sandals or flip-flops. Ages 10+. Reservations
required beginning Wed., July 16.
AUGUST
SNAKES OF HARRIS COUNTY. Saturday, August 2,
10 a.m. Only a few of the local snake species pose any threat
to humans. Attend this program to learn about the snakes that
inhabit this area and how to properly identify them. All ages.
REPTILE OPEN HOUSE. Saturday and Sunday,
August 2 and 3, 1-4 p.m. From the largest pythons to the
smallest frogs, the Nature Center is packed with live reptiles
and amphibians from around the world. Learn about these
fascinating creatures and their natural history. All ages.
HUMMINGBIRDS. Saturday, August 9, 10 a.m. Join
Texas Parks & Wildlife Information Specialist Mark Klym to
learn about local hummingbirds, their migration patterns, and
how you can be involved in tracking their numbers. All ages.
SECOND SUNDAY PICKERS. Sundays, May 11, June
8, July 13, and August 10, 2-4 p.m. Get out of the heat and
join this musical group that is celebrating over 25 years of
concerts. Bring your instrument and play along! All ages.
INVASIVES BEWARE. Third Sunday of most months, 24 p.m. Join the JJP Eradicator’s to record locations and remove
invasive plant and animal species in the park. Wear long pants
and closed-toed shoes. Ages 16+ or accompanied by adult.
JESSE JONES PARK VOLUNTEERS. Mondays, May 19,
June 30 and August 18, 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend
the JJPV monthly program and meeting. Call for more
information about volunteer opportunities. Ages 16+.
BICYCLING. The Jones-Bender, Judy Overby Bell, and
Spring Creek Greenway trails are open daily for bicycling. All
park trails are open for bicycling on Sundays ONLY. All ages.
Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
T’AI CHI. Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. Meet near the outdoor
green space stage for a one-hour beginner class with JJPV
member Doug Ebeling, 3rd degree black belt. All ages.

family per phone call. Group reservations are not allowed
unless otherwise indicated. Reservation priority is given to
Harris County residents. All programs are free of charge
and open to the public regardless of socioeconomic level,
race, color, sex, religion, physical ability, or national origin.
Anyone requiring special assistance to participate in these
programs should contact the nature center. Programs meet
at the nature center unless otherwise noted. Solid shoes are
recommended for all walks. Call for information.
ALL ABOUT TEXAS BATS. Saturday, August 16, 9 a.m.noon. Curious about bats? Join Texas Parks & Wildlife Urban
Wildlife Biologist Diana Foss to discover which bat species are
found in Harris County, the role they play in the wild, threats
they face, what makes them so vital to the balance of life, and
how you can be involved in monitoring. All ages.
HUNTER EDUCATION CERTIFICATION. Saturday or
Sunday, August 23 or 24, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. This one-day
course meets the mandated Texas Parks & Wildlife Hunter
Education requirements for Texas. Material’s fee: $15. Ages
9+. Reservations required beginning Wed., Aug. 13.
