iOrchestra is an amazing opportunity to step inside an extraordinary
orchestra. Last year 45,000 people took up that opportunity in Plymouth,
Torbay and Cornwall. This year, the Philharmonia is returning to each of those
locations, with a new immersive digital installation, creative projects for all
ages and abilities, an updated version of the iOrchestra truck and a fresh
programme of live concerts.
In the iOrchestra Truck you will find MusicLab, a mobile pop-up play and
create which invites you to step into the shoes of a conductor, a composer,
a horn-player, a clarinetist, a timpanist, and a cellist. Be introduced to the
Philharmonia Orchestra and its work, by the people who know it best:
its players. Record yourself, singing with them, and discover how the
instrumental families work, and what the Philharmonia do when they’re not
playing in concerts. As last year, MusicLab will be visiting Penzance, Liskeard,
Redruth, Bodmin and St Austell. Visits to MusicLab are completely free.
There are bookable sessions for school and community groups plus drop-in
sessions for families after 3.30 each day and on Saturdays.
The MusicLab truck will be in each town on the following dates:
• Penzance, Harbour Car Park - 8th to 13th June 2015
• Liskeard, Westbourne Car Park - 15th to 20th June 2015
• Redruth, Heartands - 22nd to 27th June 2015
• Bodmin, Priory Car Park - 29th June to 4th July 2015
• St Austell, Polkyth Car Park - 6th to 11th July 2015
In the iOrchestra Tent you will find Universe of Sound
– a multi-screen digital orchestra, in which 103 musicians
from the Philharmonia, and Principal Conductor Esa-Pekka
Salanon will take you on a journey through Gustav Holst’s
The Planets from the inside out. Visiting it is like walking
into the middle of the orchestra as they perform. The Universe of Sound giant
marquee will be on Lemon Quay in Truro from 29th June to 11th July 2015.
The whole project culminates in a free outdoor public
concert by the Philharmonia Orchestra on Lemon Quay
on Sunday 12th July at 5.00 and a concert for schools
on 13th July at the Hall for Cornwall. All the iOrchestra
events are free
Before, during, and after each of these events, the Philharmonia have been
working with community groups creating opportunities for composing,
performing, dancing, animating, exploring and inhabiting the world of
orchestral music.
Both MusicLab and Universe of Sound are now open for bookings by school
and community groups. To find out about these and all other aspects of the
project, please contact:
Patrick Bailey on [email protected] or 07766 742738.
More details about the project can be found on www.iOrchestra.co.uk
First Access is 12 week
introduction to learning an
instrument for the whole class
across Key Stages 1-3.
The programme consists of:
• An initial planning meeting.
• 10 x weekly 45 minute
instrumental lessons for the whole
class.
• A review meeting.
A key part of the programme is
that the classroom teacher learns
alongside the students in order
to develop their musical skills and
confidence. The CMEH is able to
offer grants to schools to fund a
music specialist to deliver these
sessions.
Schools will need to identify a
suitable deliverer for the sessions
and also provide their own
instruments. The Hub can assist in
this as we have a list of teachers/
organisations who are able to
deliver First Access and also sets
of instruments which can be hired
at the subsidised rate of £70 per
term.
Further information about the
programme and how to access the
funding can be found on

County Orchestra Concerts
Both the Cornwall Youth Wind Orchestra and Cornwall Youth Orchestra rounded off their Easter residential courses
with highly successful concerts.
On Friday 10th April, CYWO
performed an exciting programme
of music to a crowded Carnglaze
Caverns, highlights included
a rendition of the Harry Potter
Symphonic Suite by John Williams
and Pilatus Mountain of Dragons by
Steven Reineke.
Cornwall Youth Orchestra
The CYO performed two sell out concerts at
Launceston Town Hall and Truro Cathedral.
Their programme focussed on music from the BBC Ten Pieces
project but also included a new composition by local young
composer, Ben Comeau, and the debut performance of the
Cornwall Family Orchestra and Chorus who performed their
own piece, A Cornish Solstice. One of the highlights of the
CYO concert was the theatrical performance of Persian masterpiece, Prince
Zaal and the Simorgh. For this piece, the CYO were joined by a group of
50 young violinists, narrator John Brolly and visiting Iranian musicians,
Fariborz Kiannejad and Arash Moradi. Fariborz and Arash had spent the
previous week delivering workshops in cornish schools, introducing them to
traditional Persian music and folklore.
CYMAZ MUSIC INCLUSION UPDATE
Count Me In! Making Music more Inclusive
Conference at Heartlands on 15th April
Cymaz Music and the Cornwall Music Education Hub hosted a one day event to raise awareness and commitment to
ensuring that music education is as inclusive as it can possibly be. The day brought together key partners involved
in music education in Cornwall to discuss and debate issues relating to quality and inclusion in music education.
The day was chaired by Kathryn Deane, Chief Executive of Sound Sense and co-architect of the concept of Music
Education Hubs.
Following the debate, there were presentations, covering a range of inclusion projects and ideas, a Music Technology
workshop delivered by Cymaz Music’s Giles Woolley and Simon Williams. The National Foundation for Youth Music
gave an overview of the national picture and movements towards Musical Inclusion. All delegates fed back that they
went away with a greater understanding of musical inclusion, having made new connections with colleagues and
with a commitment to working together towards making music more inclusive.
“I’ve come away with lots of ideas.”
“A great day. Thank you!”
“I now have connections with a couple of music teachers.”

Songfest 2016!
A Vocal Showcase for young Cornish choirs!
The Cornwall Music Education Hub is inviting schools to take part in an
evening of vocal excellence, showcasing and celebrating the county’s
talented young choirs and singers as part of its vocal development strategy.
Songfest 2016 is a showcase performance of vocal excellence that will take
place in three different venues across Cornwall, over a period of three nights
in Spring 2016 and will be offered to any pupils in Upper KS1, KS2 and
Lower KS3 including SEN settings.
The first half of each evening will be taken up with performances by some
of the newly formed county choirs as well as exclusive invitations to some
school choirs and up and coming young solo artists. The second half of
the evening will focus on a massed School Choir performance made up of singers from local schools and settings,
directed by a guest conductor.
The massed Schools’ Choir will perform ‘Ocean Commotion’ composed by Debbie Campbell, a short cantata written
for primary and lower secondary aged pupils, which lasts approximately one hour. The performance will include
instrumentalists as well as ‘narrators’.
The event itself and preparation workshop will be free but schools will need to fund their own travel to the
performance venue and dress rehearsal. They will also need to buy their own copy of ‘Ocean Commotion’.
All details regarding Songfest will be given at the next VOICES Twilight meetings, held across Cornwall in early
summer 2015.
The Twilight Voices sessions will be led by Patrick Bailey and Angela Renshaw and will take place on:

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
Cornwall Residency 2015
From Tuesday 21 – Saturday 25 April 2015 Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
packed up their instruments and made their way 180 miles west, bringing 5 action packed days of
participatory events, concerts and community collaborations to Cornwall.
The orchestra offered a wide range of events across the region, including school visits, ensemble coaching, teacher
training, rural concert programmes and a full orchestra concert at Hall for Cornwall. The week culminated in a
community event where BSO musicians and local musicians joined forces side by side in an ensemble of more than
160 to rehearse and perform a piece of contemporary music – Stephen
Montague’s Dark Sun in an aircraft hangar at RNAS Culdrose, Helston.
Across the entire residency BSO offered 40 different sessions with
thousands of participants from Penzance to Launceston.
Participation Programme Manager, Caz Vale felt that the week was hugely
successful:
“We are the orchestra of the South West, so it is really important for us to
reach as many communities as we can during the course of our season.
The week long residency has been a wonderful opportunity to connect
with Cornwall, celebrating music making with local players and bringing
performances to people who may not normally get the opportunity
to hear a professional orchestra. It’s been fantastic and we are hugely
grateful to Cornwall Music Education Hub for their financial support,
expertise and local knowledge which has enabled us to reach a huge
number of young musicians”
Local musicians, schools and community groups were hugely
supportive of the visits and enjoyed a range of activities from
BSO professionals:
“What an uplifting rehearsal – I learned so much. Thank you
and please come back soon.” Truro Sinfonia member, after a
coaching session with BSO Conductor in Association, Frank
Zielhorst.
“The session has inspired me to move on to larger projects,
starting with a large ensemble.” A Level Student from Helston
Community College, after a composition workshop with
Stephen Montague.
“Thank you for this event. We really enjoyed it. Although the music seemed strange, it was a very thought-provoking
and atmospheric final performance.” Participant at the community side by side event, experiencing contemporary
classical music for the first time.
“I think I can speak for all of us in saying that this was easily one of the best experiences that we’ve had.” Young cellist
performing side by side with BSO musicians at a concert in St Endellion.
Although the Residency is over for this year, the orchestra has recruited two new Associate Musicians to develop and
deliver more music making activity in the region whilst we are away. Matt Harrison and Patrick Bailey are both resident
musicians who are able to provide even more opportunities to explore and enjoy music as part of the BSO’s work
across Cornwall.
For further information on any of the events that have taken place, or to discuss opportunities with Matt and Patrick
please contact Caz Vale, Participation Programme Manager on 01202 644725.
Many thanks for the substantial support offered from our funders of this work; The Foyle Foundation, Cornwall
Music Education Hub, Coral Samuel Charitable Trust, Basil Samuel Charitable Trust, The Steel Charitable Trust, Norman
Family Trust and Arts Council England, along with the Royal Navy for the use of RNAS Culdrose.
