Welcome back staff, students, and parents, to the new term. It will be a long term of eleven weeks (due to the Rugby World Cup) and so we need to pace it; it will prove to be a tiring
term and we need to look after our health because this is when people start to fall sick. So,
let’s look after each other, help each other to survive and do the best we can during this
term.
Students have to settle down to some hard work during Term Two. Expectations will be
high and parents are encouraged to support their children as much as possible to maintain
their high standards of effort in their learning. Please, continue to read with your children
because we know how important it is; continue to do simple mathematical problems and
challenge your children because this all makes it easier for them to access the curriculum in
the secondary phase of their schooling.
The most important thing that I need to say is that our roll is growing!! Our roll presently
stands at 189, and the Ministry predict that it will reach 198, and we are hoping to reach
that all important 200, by the end of the year. This is really good news for us because it
validates the work we are doing within the school, the impressions that are portrayed when
people visit our school, the value we are placing on achievement, and the success of our
students. This is what we are doing well and why we are a school of choice for our community. This is thanks to all the amazing staff we have here and the collaboration we have with
everyone here at school.
We have endured a period when we were making sure that the behaviour and efforts of our
students were educationally sound, and we have achieved this. We now have a behaviour
system in place that is well respected by both students and staff, using restorative practice
and justice. This takes a great deal of time, but it works. In using this system, I know that
our students feel safe and that we provide an environment where students can go to someone if they feel the need.
I am now preparing for my Sabbatical that I will be taking this year. It has taken me a long
time to earn it (nearly 40 years with the education service). I am doing a research project
which I hope will be available on the School Leadership space and the Teach NZ website in
the coming months. It has been an interesting project to have undertaken and it is of interest to the Ministry that I complete it. I am certainly looking forward to being able to work
on my research while on this leave.
I wish you all well and will see you when I return.

Reporting Student Absences from School:
Our school is committed to ensuring that all students get the most out of their education, and we want to support our students to maintain regular attendance. Students who attend school regularly learn more and
achieve better results. As parents, you have an important role in ensuring that your child attends school
whenever it is open, unless there is a good reason for his / her absence. Acceptable reasons for absence include sickness or serious family circumstances such as bereavement. If your child is going to be absent from
school, can you please advise Mrs Morrissey of the reason and the length of absence, by phoning 866 8893 or
by emailing her at [email protected]
Your role in ensuring your child’s regular attendance is so important that if you allow your child to miss school
without a valid reason, you can be prosecuted under the Education Act, 1989.
Please work with us to help support your child to attend school regularly.
Attendance is important and every day counts!
‘All children are gifted.

Kiwi Can News:
‘Kia ora’ from the Kiwi Can Team,
Welcome back to Term Two. We hope that you all had a wonderful holiday with your tamariki.
Our Kiwi Can students have been very busy. During Week One we had a Treasure Hunt to discover our new Theme and
Catchphrase for the term. The students were given a map of the school and had to search for the pieces to solve our Catchphrase puzzle.
This term our Theme is Integrity and we will be exploring this through our sub-topics of Honesty, Reliability and
Responsibility.
Our Catch Phrase for this term is:
‘We show integrity in what we do, being honest, responsible and reliable too!’
Note:
We have now revived the DROP US A LINE box in the Kiwi Can Room. The students are able to write us letters, or notes, either named or anonymous. They are able to say anything they like in these notes / letters, so if they are worried, need help
or just want to say how awesome we are and may be a little shy, they are able to do it through out Drop Us A Line box.
You are now able to donate to the FYD Kiwi Can Coromandel Programme directly through the FYD website. Go to
www.fyd.org.nz/donate and click on Kiwi Can and choose Coromandel as the region and know that your donation, no matter
how big or small, is going to our Coromandel Region to be used for our local tamariki. Your donation will be invaluable in
continuing this worthwhile and much-loved programme.
We are still seeking interested parties to sponsor FYD Kiwi Can Coromandel.

Discounted Insulation for Low-Income Families:
This Winter, there is a Government programme ,Warm Up New Zealand, offering 20% discounted insulation in Coromandel
to low-income families.
Many New Zealand homes are cold and unhealthy, contributing to respiratory disease and school absenteeism. Outbreaks of
rheumatic fever have also been linked to families sleeping together in one room to keep warm.
A warm, dry home with well-installed insulation is healthier and easier to heat and makes a significant difference to the comfort and well-being of families.
Warm Up New Zealand: Healthy Homes, which is run by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) is aimed at
households where:
 the home was built before the year 2000,
 the home owner, or main tenant, has a Community Services Card,
 there are children under 17 years or adults over 65 living in the household.
The programme is delivered by insulation companies working in most regions throughout the country. Visit the EECA website
for the contact details of insulation companies.
