Week 8, Term 2
A Word from the Principal:
We were so lucky that the sun was shining for last Friday’s Cross Country event. I enjoyed
meeting several of you over at the sausage sizzle! It was a great day, and it was positive to
see so many children taking part with enthusiasm. A big thank you to Mrs Lynne Hunt for
her organisation on the day, to make it all run so smoothly.
Reporting to Parents
It is that time of year when the teachers throughout the school are completing assessments
and beginning to write progress reports on your child’s learning. In Years 1-6, the teachers
will be making overall judgements of the progress being made towards reaching the
National Standards in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. They will outline what learning
your child has achieved, and the next steps in learning that they need to take. Years 7 & 8
are reported against their progress towards National Standards, and also their progress in
modules. For Years 9 & 10, it is a mid-year progress report, and Years 11-13, subject
teachers will report on the progress being made in the various learning areas, in relation to
NCEA requirements. The written reports will be posted to families at the end of the school
holidays. Reporting conferences with your child’s teachers will take place in Week One of
Term Three, on Thursday, 23rd July. School will finish at 2.00 p.m. for primary students
(Years 1-6) on this day. Afterschool care will be available. More information on this is to
come.
Principal Position
An advertisement to find a new principal for Coromandel Area School has been placed in
the Education Gazette, where all teaching vacancies are listed. The timeframe for this will
take several weeks, as the Board wish to find the best person to lead and manage the
school. The Board would like to have an appointment made by early August, so that the
new Principal can start in Term Four. Meanwhile, I will carry on as Acting Principal until the
end of Term Three.
Grandparents Day
This year, Grandparents Day has been timed to also coincide as a welcome for the newly
appointed principal in Week Two of Term Four. The format of the day will be a gathering in
the hall, where visitors will be entertained by musical items, followed by a morning tea, and
then a chance to visit classrooms and view the children’s art and other displayed work.
More details will follow closer to the time, but keep Wednesday, 21st October free.
Showcasing our Musical Talent at Coromandel Area School
The school is lucky to have the talents of Maria Dove working with our students in music.
On Wednesday, 12th August at 1.45 p.m., primary classes, the choir, individuals and bands
will share their talents and learning in music for you all to enjoy. This musical performance
is a new format of the talent quest that was last held a couple of years ago. Please note,
this is a change to the previously advertised Talent Quest that was due to be held on the
25th June.

ERO Visit
The Board of Trustees have had notification that the school will have its three year visit from the Education Review Office in
the last week of Term Three—the week of 21st-25th September, 2015. During an ERO visit, the reviewers evaluate the
quality of education in the school. They focus on student learning and the ways in which school policies, programmes,
processes and practices contribute to this. I usually find ERO visits a positive experience, as they affirm what the school is
doing well, but also give feedback on what next steps the school should take, in their goal to continually improve student
achievement.

Coromandel Area School Uniform Requests:
Coromandel Area School is always on the look out for unwanted school uniforms. If parents wish to donate, or know of anyone who is wishing to donate, could they please drop uniform items off at the school office. Thank you.

Reporting Student Absences from School:
Our school is committed to ensuring that all students get the most out of their education, and we want to support our students to maintain regular attendance. Students who attend school regularly learn more and
achieve better results. As parents, you have an important role in ensuring that your child attends school
whenever it is open, unless there is a good reason for his / her absence. Acceptable reasons for absence include sickness or serious family circumstances such as bereavement. If your child is going to be absent from
school, can you please advise Mrs Morrissey of the reason and the length of absence, by phoning 866 8893 or
by emailing her at [email protected]
Your role in ensuring your child’s regular attendance is so important that if you allow your child to miss school
without a valid reason, you can be prosecuted under the Education Act, 1989.
Please work with us to help support your child to attend school regularly.
Attendance is important and every day counts!
Continual Lateness to School:
It has been noted that there are a number of students continually arriving late to school in the morning. It is
important that your child be at school on time and attend morning class. Students arriving late to class disrupt
the learning of other students. It is also important that they attend morning classes so that morning notices
are received and the students are aware of what is going on in the school that day.
Your support in ensuring that your child understands the importance of being at school on time would be
greatly appreciated.
Attendance to all classes is paramount to student achievement.
Winter Reminders about Uniform:
With the arrival of the wet and cold weather of the winter months, we would like to remind parents, and
students, of acceptable winter uniform.
 The black school jersey with embroidered school logo
 Black socks, or tights, with totally black regulation school shoes
 Long sleeved white school shirts for Year 7-13 students
 Black trousers or skirts
A reminder for Year 7-13 students who feel the need for extra warmth—a white long sleeve thermal top can
be worn under your white school shirt.
There is also a black school jacket available from
The Warehouse.

Wearing Bicycle Helmets when Riding Your Bike:
It has been noticed that a number of our students are not wearing their bicycle helmets when riding their bikes
to and from school. Please note, action will be taken by the school if helmets are not worn. It is compulsory
for all cyclists in New Zealand to wear cycle helmets. Your cycle helmet must meet an approved standard, be
the correct size for your head, and be securely fastened. If your helmet gets damaged, replace it. A cycle
helmet can provide some protection for your face, head and brain in case you have an accident.
A check was carried out at school recently by the local police, on students with their bikes at school and they
were pleased to report a 100% helmet pass rate. Well done!!
‘Wear a cycle helmet every time you ride, even if you are only riding a short distance!’
