School Bag News and Issue 3 March 4th information for the Faction Athletic Carnival Cowaramup School Community CALENDAR OF EVENTS 400m, jumps and throws Wed 11th March Faction Athletics Carnival Friday 13th March Westpac Helicopter Visits 20th March Landing at 2pm Parents Welcome Next Wednesday 11th March, selected students will commence our Faction Carnival with the running of the 400m, jumps and the throws. The action will commence at 9.15m. The main carnival will commence on Friday 13th March. All students will be in a number of events, both individual and team games. This week students will be given a program to highlight which events they are in so they can share this with their parents. The P&C will be making lunches for those that pre-order. An order form has been sent out and is required to be returned by Tuesday 10th March. If you need more information please contact our canteen manager, Amanda Duggan. We encourage all students on the day to wear their school hat, use sunscreen, have a bottle of water and to be in their faction colours. Students enjoy using streamers taped to a stick and to paint their face with the colour of their faction to cheer for their team. This year any coloured hair spray or zinc should be applied at home before students come to school. If parents are looking for zinc and spray in our faction colours, Ashley from Cowaramup Pharmacy has them in stock for a great price. Interschool Athletics Carnival Thursday 26th March Our faction tents will need to be set up the day before on Thursday. If you can assist in setting them up, we would appreciate your assistance from 11am. Cowaramup Primary School - An Independent Public School Page 2 Student Absences A reason for your child’s absence from school can be sent to school using the School Phone App. Just use the Parent eForms from the menu. This now works on both the Samsung and Apple Iphone. Uniform Shop Kirsten Zan runs the school uniform shop every Wednesday before our school assembly, 8.30am – 9.00am Twice a year families are asked to place an order for school uniforms. This is in terms 2 and term 4. Some stock is kept on hand for new students and for those that might need an extra item. School hats are always available from the front office. Outside Play During the summer and autumn weather it is a wonderful time to reconnect with the magnificent natural environment we are so very fortunate to call home. Nature Play WA (http:// www.natureplaywa.org.au) and Outdoors WA (outdoorsoctober.com.au ) have a range of resource, ideas and inspirations to encourage families to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Being outside and enjoying the natural world doesn’t have to come with a price tag. A few online links before you swap the screen time for some green time follow. These are engaging simple ideas that will put the spark into the outdoors. www.natureplay.org has a wonderful section for families with great ideas for fun, active things to do. One of our favourites is “51 Things to do Before You’re 12” These are some things that the people at Nature Play believe every child should experience. You can print out the list and see how you are faring. The Green Time vs Screen Time tool for families is a fun way to help you keep track of how much time your children are spending playing outdoors ('green time'), versus time spent indoors, watching TV or on the computer ('screen time'). Before you turn off the screens, follow the link above to download the tool. http://www.outdoorsoctober.com.au/calendar/ This calendar has a wide range of family friendly, outdoor ideas and can be searched by area, by week or by month. Children's Crossing to Commence Shortly Training for our Voluntary Traffic Wardens will commence this Monday the 9th March and will be run by Sgt David Hurdle from Bunbury Police. It is then planned to train the students in each of our classes so that they know the correct way to safely cross at this crossing when there is a Traffic Warden on duty. Have you downloaded our school app for your favourite phone? From a road rules perspective the only time traffic is required to stop at the crossing, is when a Traffic Warden has directed them to stop. It is not a crosswalk that requires all traffic to stop when a pedestrian is waiting to cross. It’s a great way to get newsletters, send in student absences, read the canteen menu and so much more. Have a look today! A letter will be sent home to all parents letting them know the times the crossing will have a Traffic Warden and the day the crossing will commence operation. Phone App It is available on Apple Iphones and Andorid phones. For those that have had trouble before with the App. It has now been updated and should solve any issues you had before. Please let us know if the fix hasn't worked for you. It is hoped that once operational, we will be able to demonstrate over 4 weeks, that there are 20 students regularly crossing the road for the Traffic Warden to become a paid position. School Board Last week, I was able to confirm the final positions on our School Board. The voting for our parent representatives was exceptionally close and required myself and Karen Barrett-Lennard to recount the voting twice to ensure that the result was accurate. Can I thank all of our nominees and the parents that voted. The School Board for 2015 is the following: Peter Howse Jemma Hopkins Karen Barrett-Lennard Kathleen O’Shea Michelle Hallyburton Sue Vernon David Groves Principal Staff Representative Parent Representative Parent Representative Parent Representative Community Representative Community Representative A number of our School Board members were able to be part of our School Development Day yesterday, as we began developing a School Business Plan for our school. I look forward to our first meeting as we work collaboratively in making Cowaramup Primary School a very special place for children to grow and learn. Illness and School Attendance There have been some bugs going around the school community this term. Please make sure that you keep your children away from school while they are still contagious. Guidelines can be found on the Department of Health WA website. If your child is absent due to illness or for any other reason please let the school know. You can phone the office, send a letter in with your child or use our school phone app. Casual Cleaner Required Our school requires the services of a casual cleaner. No experience required.
