CHRISTOPHER CHANDLER, PASTOR
What Is Pentecost?
Pentecost is a Christian holy day that celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit
40 days after Easter. Some Christian denominations consider it the birthday
of the Christian church and celebrate it as such.
Originally, Pentecost was a Jewish holiday held 50 days after Passover. One
of three major feasts during the Jewish year, it celebrated Thanksgiving for
harvested crops. However, Pentecost for Christians means something far
different.
Before Jesus was crucified, he told his disciples that the Holy Spirit would come after him:
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever
— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor
knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave
you as orphans; I will come to you. John 14:16–18
And 40 days after Jesus was resurrected (10 days after he ascended into heaven), that promise
was fulfilled when Peter and the early Church were in Jerusalem for Pentecost:
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and
filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be
tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them
were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the
Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1–4
Although many North American Christians hardly notice Pentecost today,
traditional European churches consider it a major feast day. Pentecost, also
called Whitsuntide in parts of Europe, is just behind Easter in overall importance.
For example, in Germany today, on only three occasions does the observance of a
national holiday span two days: Christmas (December 25 and 26), Easter (Sunday
and Monday), and Pentecost (Sunday and Monday).
Be sure to wear red to church on Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2015.

LAST WEDNESDAY NIGHT STUDY BEFORE SUMMER
SOUL KEEPING:
Caring for the Most Important Part of You,
continues through May 27.
Join us Wednesday nights at 6:15 in Fellowship
Hall for this thought-provoking study of our
soul. When the soul is whole, everything else
runs smoothly: one experiences peace in the
midst of chaos, ease during challenges, and hope in living. When
the soul is damaged, the body, mind, and will are at odds, working
against each other. When our souls are damaged, our minds believe an action is
good, but our bodies do another: we eat the ice cream knowing the kale is better!
Books are $15 in the office or are available on Kindle.
Below are some comments by some in the Soul Keeping Study and what they have
learned:
The classes often are thought
provoking to the point of me doing a
little "soul" searching. If I could just
put my finger on where, what, and
how deep I have to go to find my
soul? ~Roger Garten
An integrated soul is now my goal!
~ Anonymous
When I sat at the PW luncheon listening
to Stacy Chandler singing "Turn Your
Eyes upon Jesus" and my eyes welled up
with tears, I knew that it was my soul
saying "all is well." When Myra gives
one of her many awesome closing
prayers on Wednesday nights after choir
practice, and it touches all of us in ways
we can't explain, that is our souls saying
"I'm so glad to be here and be a part of
this awesome music ministry.

We wish to call your attention to the library cart in the hall outside Fellowship Hall. The special display
for May and June will be “Parenting” in honor of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. There are books that
run the whole gamut from raising children, to raising difficult children, step children, divorced parents,
and elderly or aging parents. Look for blue dots on the spines of the books.
There are also books devoted to the care of aging parents and caregiving for the caregiver. For example,
there is an excellent book titled, The Thirty Six Hour Day, helpful read for those taking care of parents who
have slipped into Alzheimer’s or other illness that requires full time care. These books will have two small red
dots. There are more inside the library---browse around
and find any that might be helpful to you.

There's a Mouse in our House!
Hey everybody. I’ve been spoiling myself lately by
staying inside, so I thought I might spend a little time
running around the garden in front of and around the
sanctuary maybe smelling a flower or two, if I could
only reach them. Then it happened, two nice ladies
showed up. They were pulling weeds and planting
some lovely flowers.
Luckily, they didn’t see
me. I got to watch them
the whole time they
beautified the area.
Thanks ladies – Sandy
Rossmeyer and Beebe
White. You sure make my
home look nice and I’m
finding out too, that it’s
your home on Sundays - that is the big building I’m
next to. Time to get out of that sun, it’s hot.
So I laid low for the day, kind of resting. Somebody
mentioned a food room. That sounded good, so I
headed for it. This move turned out to be very
dangerous because there was Roger Casey and Roger
Garten putting up food. Not only was their moving
around real dangerous to me, but I saw there is no
food open here that I might get into. Dog gone it! For
a food room I couldn’t figure out why it was so clean
and organized. Then I heard it was a room shared by
Katie Kemmer who is setting up
a program called “Buddy Break.”
They said it was a program
where parents have their special
-needs’ kids watched by
qualified people on a certain day
of the week so they can catch
up on things or just enjoy
themselves. I heard Katie
Kemmer is being helped by
Joyce Dawson, Bet Taylor,
Kacie Fuller, Lillie Ogle, Jake
Fuller, Nancy Burrows and
Jamie Sheriff. I sure could
have used such a program
when my wife Bella and I had
our 10 kids. Such help would
have been greatly
appreciated. I sure better stay
out of that room and out of their way. It could be fun
to run through it, though. I might get some free food.
It was a real pleasure living in the pastor’s room all
week. It was nice and quiet. What a guy he is! I heard Pastor
Chris just wanted to spend some time alone with his wife,
somewhere in New York. I hope they had as much fun as Bella and I
did. After raising our 10 kids, any quiet time alone is pure joy. I believe
they surely deserved it especially after that wonderful sermon Stacy
gave last Sunday. Yep! I was there - something about the Triumphal
Entry or what happens after you win a battle. Anyway, staying away
from your guys’ feet is a triumph for me. And by
the way, I heard Miss Stacy continued to “wow”
all the ladies with her talk in the women’s
luncheon after her preaching such a great
sermon. What a team those two are!
You may not realize that I’m around.. but any
morsels of food you “accidentally” drop for me
are much appreciated! Until next time..

were both born in Dayton, Ohio, and have been members of Christ Presbyterian
Church since 2012. They have also lived in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and
have been married for 46 years. Pam’s immediate family includes her
mother, Ruth Thompson who lives here and attends CPC, two brothers
and one sister, while Phil has only one brother. The Sweets have two
sons, Douglas (age 40) and David (age 36) who both reside in Michigan.
When asked about education, Phil and Pam both describe their degrees
as being in LIFE. Phil formerly worked in banking and sales, and Pam was
employed as a pre-school teacher and an artist. Favorite pastimes for
Pam include gardening and artwork. In addition to his music,
Phil enjoys hunting and fishing. They have traveled to every
state in the U.S. except for Alaska, as well as Tahiti.
You may not know this about sweet Phil and Pam, but they
have both gone bear hunting, and obviously from the
accompanying photos, they love the outdoors! When asked
whom they most admire, Pam responded “Mother Theresa,”
and Phil readily answered with “Franklin Graham.”
Phil and Pam are very involved at CPC! They are both in the Adult
Choir, JuBellation handbell choir, are Adventures in the Arts
leaders, VBS helpers, and on the Praise Team. Phil
also serves on the Mission Team as well as the
board for the Presbyterian Counseling Center.
When asked how they would like to be
remembered, Phil and Pam both responded…as
good, Christian people! We are so blessed to have
Phil and Pam Sweet in our midst!
Tom Peacock and Sherry Davis
Longtime sweethearts, Tom Peacock and Sherry Davis, were both born in Daytona Beach, Florida, and have
attended Christ Presbyterian Church for a long time, joining on April 27, 2005. Known affectionately to friends
and family as Tommy and Sher, they have dated each other for 26 years.
As a young girl, Sherry lived in San Diego, California. Tom lived in Texas, Illinois, and
England during his service in the Air Force. Sherry is the daughter of Chuck and Muriel
Butler and has one sister living in St. Augustine. The son of James and Ellen Peacock, Tom
grew up in First Baptist Church, downtown Daytona, and has two brothers, one living in
Georgia and the other in Ormond Beach. Tom also has two
daughters and five grandchildren, all residing in the Orlando area.
Graduates of Mainland High School
School,, Sherry has worked for 53 years
as a dental assistant. Tom retired from Southern Bell/Bell South after
35 years as the manager of installation and maintenance for Volusia
and Flagler counties. A favorite pastime of both Tom and Sherry is cruising, and they have
visited Hawaii, Alaska, the Panama Canal, and Europe on vacations. Sherry also enjoys
eating out, and snuggling with her favorite dachshund, Maddie, when she is pet sitting for the Willetts. Tom
continues to be an active softball player and golfer and works part time at Destination Daytona.
Still on their bucket list of places to visit are Niagara Falls for Sherry and the Baltic Sea for Tommy. Sherry describes
herself as the kid who was never going to leave home, and has lived the majority of her
life in the Daytona Beach area. Tom would like to be remembered as a fun-loving guy who
enjoyed life, and describes his mission as taking care of Sherry. Always ready with a hug,
Sherry would like to be remembered for her affectionate, warm and friendly nature. Both
Tom and Sherry help make CPC the kind of place where people want to be!

From the Presbyterian Counseling Center
We just had our Sixth Luncheon. Ever since The Great
Recession and the simultaneous end of the support provided
by a large bequest a decade before, the community of
Presbyterians have stepped up as individuals, couples and
families. The churches provide support from their Mission
Budgets, but $21 out of the $85 cost of every session comes
from the wonderful network of donors.
Those in attendance had a delicious lunch, heard beautiful "Music by Gordon and Ann,"
learned about the progress on our parenting class initiative which began last year, learned
of our new focus for the year ahead which is to carry the message of our special skills -clinical excellence and spiritual sensitivity -- to other churches in the area.
The generosity shown at the Luncheon was the donation, after costs, of the amazing
amount of $10,015! That covers about one quarter of the gap between what clients pay and
what it costs us. What a wonderful group of supporters we have in this community!
All I can say is, I thank our God whenever I think of all of you who pray for this ministry.
Humbly grateful,
Dr. Lex Baer

Dear Pastor Chris and CPC Scholarship
Committee,
I wanted to write now, near the
conclusion of my seminary education, to
once again say thank you. You have
generously supported me and my family
through much of my seminary journey,
and I can hardly find the words to
express my gratitude.
By the grace of God, we have been
truly blessed this past year. Both by the
honor of scholarships for school, and by
providence. Jeff has taken a new job and
has found great success in a job he
greatly enjoys. It is our desire to share
the blessings we have been given and
turn them into praise!
In our pursuit of glorifying God with
the great blessings God has given us, we
couldn’t help but think of our extended
church family at CPC. While this gift
pales in comparison to those you have
given us, we hope it will bless your
congregation. As people who feel deeply
called to the renewal and growth of the
church, we pray this small gift will
contribute toward God’s mission for
CPC.
With immeasurable love, grace and
peace, The Steinberg Family
Jeff, Katy, Macie and Sadie
