What We’re Learning…This Week
Reading: We will finish studying our Solar
System and Space. Lots of factual
information will allow us to practice our nonfiction comprehension skills.
Working with Words: We will continue to
review all 200 first grade sight words! We
will also be focusing on multi-syllable words.
Writing: We will be finishing up our extra
SUCCESS writing each morning. Something
new to help us master the writing essential
learning goals we need to complete.
Math: We will be reviewing the math skills
that have not been mastered. Students are
working on individual goals in the areas
they need. Math facts with addition and
subtraction continue to be an area that can
benefit with speed and accuracy
practice.
Please make sure
you are checking
your child’s folder
every night. Lots
of information and
papers will be
coming home in
the next week as
we work on
cleaning out of
desks! 

When students are assessed on reading levels, he/she
needs to be confident when answering comprehension
questions. Reviewing these skills with your child each
night will greatly help build his/her confidence.

Main Idea – Students are asked to retell the story
including the main idea (the most important part) and
key details. Ask your child to tell you what the story was
about. Stress the importance of telling it back in
sequential order.
Fiction:
Setting – Where the story takes place
Characters – The people, animals, or creatures that
take part in the story. Ask your child to describe the
characters to you (actions, look, and behaviors).
