MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan was established through an ordinance
promulgated on the 19th May, 1962 by the President of Pakistan entrusting it to
promote specialist medical practice; arrange postgraduate medical training; conduct
examinations and award degrees (membership and fellowship); and provide for
research.
The CPSP has a long and proud history of achievements. Throughout its existence the
College has steadily progressed in the field of medical and dental specialization as a
premier postgraduate medical institution in the country and beyond. Important
benchmarks, accomplishments and milestones have contributed to this progress and
recognition. The renown attained by the College makes it a bastion of knowledge and
a source of unfettered flow of opportunities for the entire continuum of medical
education including undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education.
Today we take immense pride in marking this historic Charter Day event. The 3-day
celebrations include courses on ATLS, ALSO, BLS, PALS, and symposia on Surgery,
Medicine, Family Medicine and Medical Education Conference.
Attainment and maintenance of high quality practice requires continuity of learning
throughout the professional career. The College recognizes its responsibilities in this
regard, and has drawn an elaborate and phased program of CME/CPD at a national
level. The goal is to provide learning experiences that instill in physicians and dental
surgeons a passion for academic and professional excellence.

COURSES
Advance Trauma Life Support (ATLS):
Focal Person: Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz
The ATLS® is a 3 day course held throughout a year. It teaches a safe reliable
method for immediate management of the injured trauma patient. It is a multidisciplinary course enabling a standardized language of trauma care across the
specialities. It brought forward concept of golden hour in critical care so as to
decrease morbidity and mortality. Attendance at the course also exposes the

management.

The American Heart Association designed the BLS for Healthcare Providers

several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use and AED, and relieve
chocking in a safe, timely, and effective manner.
Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS):
Focal Person: Prof. Abrar Ashraf Ali
Paediatric Advanced Life Support provides healthcare professionals this
opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to improve
recognition, treatment and outcomes of seriously ill and injured children.
Totally redesigned to incorporate new science evidence from the 2005 AHA
Guidelines for CPR and ECC, this all new PALS Course includes a new teaching
methodology and course design. Through the PALS Course, healthcare
providers will enhance their skills in the identification and treatment of
medical conditions that place the child at risk for cardiac arrest; the systematic
approach to Paediatric assessment, the assess-categorize-decide-act approach
to assessment and management of a seriously ill infant or child; PALS
algorithms and flowcharts: and effective resuscitation team dynamics.
Advance Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO):
Focal Person: Prof. Rakhshanda Rehman
The need for management of Obstetrical emergencies is great in developing
countries, including Pakistan. With 99 percent of maternal deaths occurring in
developing countries, maternal mortality is the health statistic with the largest
disparity between more developed and developing countries. The maternal
mortality rate in Pakistan is 260 per 100,000 live births, compared with 8 per
100,000 live births in the United States. The lifetime risk of maternal death in
Pakistan is 1 in 31 compared with 1 in 2500 in the United States. ALSO Provider
