Session Abstract: Beginning in 2013, hospitals faced potential reimbursement penalties for excessively high 30 day readmission rates for congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, and
pneumonia. Each year the potential penalty increases. Lean methodology is a proven strategy in
the manufacturing industry to reduce waste and improve outcomes. The basic premise of Lean is
to include the people who do the work to improve the work by understanding the current state to
build a better future state.
