This Aladdin’s cave of treasures forms part of
the Arkwright Society’s recycling initiative,
whilst also raising funds. Sells glass, tableware,
quality bric-a-brac and a constantly changing
stock of second hand books. Opening hours are
dependent on volunteers – can be opened on request.

KEEP THE CROMFORD WHEELS TURNING
The mill complex at Cromford is described as the most
important preserved textile heritage site in the world. It is
from here that Sir Richard Arkwright developed technology
that changed the world by creating the modern factory system.

Following 50 years of dilapidation the site has been rescued
by the Arkwright Society which saved it from demolition and
secured World Heritage status.
Whilst the Society is making
fantastic progress with raising
funds for the delivery of the
Cromford Mills Masterplan, a
multi-million pound regeneration
plan for the site, the day to
day costs of our charitable
work still have to be met
through our trading activities
and local fundraising. Each
year the Society needs to raise
approximately £100,000 in
order to continue its education
projects for groups of all ages,
the extensive events and
activities programme, volunteer
schemes to help hard to reach
groups including the long
term unemployed and those
with disabilities, and a range
of projects ensuring our local
communities are engaged with
the resources that the World
Heritage Site has to offer.

the first water-powered spinning mill at
Cromford, Peter Nightingale and his associate
John Smedley established John Smedley as an
enterprise at the original mill in Lea Mills. Over 200 years later
the company is still based at Lea Mills. Jane Middleton-Smith,
archivist at John Smedley, gives an insight into the history and
present day business of this iconic British brand.

The White Peak’s River Bradford
flows through open
meadows and deep limestone
dales. It has been modified by man
since the Middle Ages and is now a popular
walk for visitors to the area. Christine

a delightful walled garden and large and comfortable reading
rooms, it houses an independent lending library that has
operated continuously since 1816. The building contains many
original Georgian features, some fine paintings and furniture as
well as a meridian line which is still operational. It is also home
to the first photographic studio in Nottingham.
In the 1950s Courtaulds was at the forefront of
the explosion in man-made fibres, employing
at its height 80,000 people world-wide. Coats
Viyella was formed later from several different
companies and today one in five garments on the planet is held
together with Coats’ thread. Back by popular demand Peter
South, Head Guide at Cromford Mills, delivers an insightful,
humorous and entertaining look back at his 38 years with these

A tour of JCB’s World Headquarters
in Rocester begins with a short presentation showing
a short film on the global manufacturing facilities and
products. Afterwards there will be a tour of the new Story
of JCB exhibition and the JCB shop. The tour then moves
on to the assembly line of the world famous Backhoe
Loader machine – see the process of how the machine is

who started his clock making business in Derby

The Lunar Society was a group of prominent
people that some said were, next to the Royal
Society, the most important gathering place of
scientists, inventors and natural philosophers
during the second half of the eighteenth century. The Society met
frequently at Soho House in Birmingham, the home of Matthew
Boulton who was a founder member of the Society. Listen to

London. Alke has exhibited in both the UK and abroad with her
work in private collections in Europe, the USA and Australia.
Tangled Yarns explores the politics and morality of the textile
industry with each of the works exploring a different episode in
the industry’s complex history. Schmidt reveals how the trade
was intertwined with issues of race and gender, exploitation
and violence. This is a rare opportunity to view this much
talked about exhibition.

played during the war years, the later supply of synthetic oils
for the jet age and the supply for Concorde, US Air Force, and

supplier of racing lubricants and finally its take-over and move

In 1817 a group of around 400 men,
in the main from South Wingfield,
Pentrich, and Ripley, marched upon
Nottingham where they expected
to be joined by many others. The
aim was London and the removal of
a hated Government and the implementation of what they
saw as a fair and democratic order. They were impelled by
desperate want and a Government agent provocateur, Oliver
the Spy. They aspired to revolution but in reality they were
met by the Dragoons, dispersed and their leaders executed
or transported. The episode can be seen as a sad and
stupid mistake or a stumble on the way to representative
democracy as told by Julian Atkinson.

Sir Richard Arkwright has brought modernity
to a remote corner of Derbyshire with
the creation of Cromford Mill. Now, as his
crowning glory, he’s going to build himself a
castle. But first a strange outcrop of rocks is
going to have to be removed.
Locals warn Arkwright of a local legend about
‘Crooker’, a dangerous nature spirit. Sir Richard scoffs at
such notions - until it becomes clear an uncanny force in the
landscape is prepared to fight him for ownership of the valley,
in a play mingling Cromford’s history with the supernatural
chills of an authentic local legend.... Multi award-winning
Wireless Theatre Company and playwright Marty Ross (BBC
Radio drama; Doctor Who audio), the team responsible for
last year’s sell-out ghost story The Woman On The Bridge at
the Buxton Festival, present another of their unique ‘live radio
drama recordings’... a Hallowe’en experience not to be missed.

booking. Tickets can be collected from Cromford Mills before

Cromford stands on the A6, 16 miles north of Derby.
It is within easy reach of the M1 (approximately 20
minutes) and on a fast route linking Nottingham and
Derby to Buxton, Stockport and Manchester.
There are regular bus services to Cromford, as well as
an hourly train service from Derby.
