Visiting Artist residencies are one-to-two weeks and offer in-depth and
often repeated contact between the artist and audience. Educational
performances in community sites and schools last 45 min, creating
personal connections between the artist and community. Each
residency then concludes with a full-length public concert providing
community members the opportunity to hear and see artists of
international acclaim for free or at a low ticket price.

Quad City Arts Mission
Statement & History
Quad City Arts is dedicated to the growth and vitality of the Quad City region through the presentation,
development and celebration of the arts. We serve a
bi-state area including Scott, Clinton and Muscatine
counties in Iowa and Rock Island, Henry and Mercer
counties in Illinois.
Quad City Arts has served the community for more
than 30 years. In 1988, four groups - Quad City Arts
Council (1970), Visiting Artist Inc. (1974), Festival of
Trees (1986) and the Bix Arts Festival - combined their
resources to make one of the largest arts organizations
of its kind in Iowa or Illinois. Quad City Arts has a
small staff that works with a board of directors, more
than 150 advisory committee members, and a volunteer
corps of more than 3,500.
Visiting Artist Series
The 37th season of Visiting Artist Series brought 38
artists in 9 residencies to the Quad Cities, reaching
more than 53,325 people in six counties.

We have seen our economy rise and fall over the past few years, which has had
a dramatic impact on all of us including Quad City Arts; financial challenges
that tested our strength and resolve. Through the leadership of Carmen and our
board, we have been able to make shifts necessary to enable us to continue our
legacy of presenting, educating and supporting the arts in our region. I am
proud to say we are stronger than ever.
We sincerely appreciate the support you have given in the past, and trust you will
continue your support as we look forward to many more rewarding years.

Our annual report tells the abbreviated story of our programming without being able to portray the immeasurable

Visual Art
79 local and regional artists provided
one of a kind functional and fine art
in the gallery store, showcasing the
high quality of talent in our region
to visitors.
Public Sculpture
Quad City Arts has been
facilitating Public Sculpture
in the Quad Cities since
2002. The 2010-11 season
showcased 9 sculptures
by 7 regional artists in
Davenport, Bettendorf
and Rock Island.
In June, artwork was installed simultaneously at Quad City Arts and the
German American Heritage Center for
“Roots-Who’s Your Mama?” (a bi-state
art exhibition based on heritage). A
progressive opening reception featured
ethnic appetizers and a poetry reading
at the GAHC, followed by ethnic
desserts, coffee and awards at Quad
City Arts gallery. Over one hundred
guests packed the GAHC for opening
comments and then made the trek
across the Mississippi River to Quad
City Arts for the award ceremony.
Both venues cross-marketed the other
while the exhibition continued for
an additional five weeks. Attendance
increased at both venues during the
exhibit. Thirteen regional artists, the
34th Annual High School Invitational
and our December Gift Show rounded
out the visual art offerings.
The Art @ the Airport gallery
continued to impress viewers from all
over the United States with exhibits
by 13 regional artists, plus 22 members
of the Quad City Woodturners
organization who were featured during
the winter holidays. Special thanks go
to airport volunteers, Chris Rayburn,
Jane Koski, Diane Bruce and Lauren
Sciascia.
Quad City Arts continued to serve as
a resource to developing, as well as
established, visual artists by providing
exhibit opportunities, referrals and
an e-news letter which disseminates
opportunities from throughout the
country.
mARTch Madness, the Visual
Arts programming fundraiser, was
even more fun this year with a Mad
Hatters’ theme. Guests enjoyed artistic
cupcakes handcrafted by Karin Woods
and served by Monta Ponsetto dressed
as a moving table, followed by a
colorful, full course meal. Activities
included contributing to a group
painting, taking a chance on a bottle
of wine, and participating in the fine
art auction for which 43 regional artists
donated original artwork. More than
$7000 was raised to
support programs and
galleries for regional
artists.

Metro Arts Summer Youth Employment Program
In its twelfth year, Metro Arts brought together fifty-six young artists for
five weeks with six professional artists. For the first time ever, the program
simultaneously produced three murals in three cities. Bettendorf hosted its first
Metro Arts project, facilitating a mural on Lincoln Road east of 18th Street.
The mural, titled “Active in Iowa,” was supervised by Metro Arts alumnus and
past lead artist, Michelle Garrison. First-time lead artist Steve Banks led another
mural painting group, which painted vibrant storefront designs on the westfacing wall of the YWCA building (16th Street in Rock Island, south of 2nd
Avenue). Sarah Robb led her fifth mural painting group, completing the mural
“Cultural Harmony” at the intersection of 3rd Street and Iowa Street in Davenport. Metro Arts also partnered with the Moline Public Library to produce book sculptures as a side
project for select mural apprentices. The sculptures will be on display at the library indefinitely. Continuing the successful partnership with Ballet Quad Cities, Metro Arts featured a dance group guided
by BQC dancers Maggie Huling and Jason Gomez. The dance group built on their success with outreach performances throughout the Quad City area. Metro Arts reintroduced Comedy Improvisation
with veteran lead artist and ComedySportz coach Jeff De Leon. The Establishment Theatre hosted
the showcase, which featured presentations by the mural groups, performances by the dance group,
and interactive games with the comedy group. The new venue added a dimension of professionalism
to the evening, enjoyed by participants and audience members alike.

Quad City Arts Gallery
Sept. 2nd-Oct. 14th
The exhibition, "You Are Here," showcases the talents of
Audrey Brown of Rock Island and Randy Richmond of
Muscatine.
Brown
"You Are Here" depicts the rural landscape as seen by contrasting perspectives. One is more literal,
yet thickly layered in color and atmosphere. The other is more literary and layered in ambiguity and
atmospheric histories. Both communicate an appreciation of the mid-western landscape and the
stories that sometimes go unnoticed and untold.
Pastel artist Audrey Brown creates timeless pastoral scenes that take the viewer on a daydream-like
journey to the countryside where one can begin to relax simply by gazing at her paintings.
Photographer Randy Richmond provides a three-dimensional aspect to the exhibit with photo
based assemblages created around brass mounted, unique photographs. The small photographs’
historical feel are supported by the antique boxes that are used to “frame” them. These will be in
addition to his landscape photographs.
Join us for the opening reception on
September 9th from 7-9 pm, in the gallery.
Refreshments will be served and artists will be
on hand to answer questions about their work.
Richmond
Oct. 21st-Nov. 23rd
From October 21st through November 23rd, Lisa Marie Barber of
Kenosha, Wisconsin and Gabriella Boros from Skokie, Illinois will
fill the gallery with their imaginative narrative works.
Boros
Barber
Multi-media artist, Lisa Marie Barber, will create a small city of ceramic
installations complemented by painting on the gallery walls. Influenced
by Mexican folk art and altars rooted in her Mexican-American heritage,
her work is intended to be both celebratory and sober; projecting positive
interpretations of the human condition. Barber will also exhibit some of
her mixed media works on fabric.
Painter Gabriella Boros produces paintings based on stories that come
from her experiences as a female, Israeli born daughter of Shoah
(Holocaust) survivors and of being Jewish. She makes religious,
cultural and geographical references to these themes in her art. Her
exhibit, titled “Stories of Today: Tomorrow’s Reflections” promises to
take viewers on a storytelling voyage. This trip spans cultures which
overlap and inform one another, resulting in images which are vivid
and universal.
Join us for the opening reception on October 21st
from 7-9 pm, in the gallery. Refreshments will be
served and artists will be on hand to answer questions
about their work.

September-October
The gallery at the Quad City International Airport,
in September and October, will feature black and
white photography by Michael Johnson and
sculpture by Donald Noon.
Michael Johnson of Mount Carroll, Illinois is a
photographer who spent forty continuous years
studying the landscape of Northwestern Illinois.
Johnson states that he spends most of his time
looking at the land and planning the finished image
before photographing it. His beautiful large
prints emphasize the rich complexity and specific
qualities of light. When planning the appropriate
motif, Johnson requires a suitable pattern of
shadow and light which can take weeks or months
to evaluate and find in the right combination to
resolve the composition.
Donald M. Noon of Streator, Illinois is a
sculptor whose work strives to evoke the viewer
through reflection and the use of amorphous
shapes that stem from Native American culture.
Noon will be exhibiting his dramatic sculptures
based on Monoliths, which have carried
spiritual, religious and scientific significance
throughout the course of mankind. His
sculptures and drawings aim to conjure
the significance of this beyond the formal
aspects of composition.
Both artists focus on the history and
significance of life. One artist
addresses the natural beauty of
Northwestern Illinois landscapes,
and the other on the spiritual and
human significance of the
Native American culture.

Save the Date for this
year’s “Quad City Arts
Festival of Trees” –
November 18-27
Under the guidance of Co Directors Michelle Tinman, Brock
Shradar, and Julie and John Smith, and with the blessings of
Honorary Co-Director Tom Getz, this year’s Festival promises
to be collaborative and fresh. The theme “Christmas Time in
the Cities” embodies all that the Quad Cities is about. We hope
the theme inspires our designers and committees to showcase
the amenities of our community.
With the Quad City theme in mind, some of the new attractions
that will be featured are:
• An over-the-top private collection display of Department
56 houses owned by Rock Island native Jayne Pearson
will entice the decorative spirit.
• A City Tree area will showcase trees decorated and
sponsored by various cities. Each city will highlight their
spirit, people, businesses and amenities in an effort to
exhibit collaboration and bring the communities
together.

We hope to again bring together a diverse population of local
residents to work together on this amazing event which is
entering its 26th year. Approximately 3,500 volunteers are needed
to accommodate all the events and attractions at Festival. Each
volunteer will receive a free ticket to Festival for every shift
worked and every volunteer’s name is entered into drawings for
valuable door prizes. We are now actively recruiting volunteers
and designers. For more information contact: Deb McDaniel
