Datasheet OnCommand Cloud Manager: Simplifying Your Hybrid Cloud Data Management KEY BENEFITS • Streamline the deployment, management, and tracking of your enterprise-class Data ONTAP® storage resources in or near the public cloud • Centralized management for multiple cloud providers and storage tiers based on Data ONTAP • Enabling storage admins to centrally audit and track resources and spending per department The Challenge The prominence of the public cloud in today’s IT ecosystem has brought new challenges to enterprise admins and architects. For many, the decision to utilize the cloud has already been decided, often by directive, and now come the bigger questions around the “what,” “when,” and “how.” What applications should we run in the cloud? When should we move them? How do we get our data there? This is rarely an all-or-nothing decision. Applications and data will reside in your data center and cloud environments in a true hybrid fashion. In this hybrid cloud environment, your storage management tools should help you address your day-to-day needs and help determine placement to costeffectively utilize the resources available to you in the cloud, near the cloud, or on your premises. On top of this, the raw storage that is available in hyperscale cloud environments is much like DAS storage in a server. It is raw storage that highly is susceptible to loss. To trust cloud storage environments, you need additional features such as RAID, replication, or snapshots to make sure that your data remains in case of an outage. Again, your data management tools will need to be there to track and control your storage environment to meet compliance and security for your data. OnCommand Cloud Manager OnCommand® Cloud Manager provides management for your Data ONTAP hybrid cloud storage environment, including NetApp® Cloud ONTAP and NetApp Private Storage (NPS) for Cloud. Cloud Manager eases the day-to-day requirements of your Cloud ONTAP and NPS for Cloud environments, including configuring, provisioning and monitoring each of your active virtual and hardware storage nodes. It also is the deployment environment for Cloud ONTAP that offers a point-and-click installation and automatically selects and assigns resources to each instance. When deploying Cloud ONTAP, Cloud Manager will use your AWS credentials to select the EC2 virtual machine and the EBS storage necessary to run the instance of your choice. With visibility into the actual resources consumed by each instance, Cloud Manager can monitor and track cloud resource utilization, which can later be used in assessing your environment. To best fit your individual needs, Cloud Manager can either operate as a cloud-resident Amazon machine instance (AMI) that gets deployed directly from the Amazon Marketplace or be deployed in your data center. Managing your hybrid cloud storage environment Hyperscale cloud providers offer many functions, including infrastructure as a service (IaaS), that provide customers raw server and storage resources to use as they see fit. For the storage, management should be done in a way that answers your key concerns and that best resembles how you manage your data on premises. Cloud Manager provides the interface that ties your hybrid cloud storage together. Addressing Resource Cost When determining the infrastructure that best fits your application and Table 1) Application deployment options. economic needs, NetApp offers a wide variety of options from which to choose. These options range from onpremises storage systems to the cloud, with both near the cloud FAS storage systems and storage that is directly in the cloud with Cloud ONTAP. Cloud Manager simplifies the deployment of your environment, whether it be for Cloud ONTAP pay-as-you-go environments in which you pay by the hour, longer term subscription deployments, or your purchased NPS solutions. Choosing which one of these models to use requires a basic guideline for the application pattern, as shown in Table 1. Cloud ONTAP takes it to the next level by tracking your cloud resource usage to help you better determine where your application should reside.
