The international nonprofit association, which publishes the journal Science, has a
membership of distinguished scholars who work to promote science for the benefit of
all people. Orme’s inclusion recognizes his groundbreaking work in understanding the
pulmonary immune response to tuberculosis, and in developing vaccines and drugs to
combat TB, an infectious disease that remains one of the globe’s most intractable public
health threats.

UNIVERSITY DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR EMERITUS,
DEPARTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
Named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors
The academy recognizes inventors who hold patents and
encourages the translation of innovations and intellectual
property for the benefit of society. Seidel retired in 2011 but
continues to work part-time at the Animal Reproduction and
Biotechnology Laboratory, a university Program of Research
and Scholarly Excellence. Seidel, a reproductive physiologist,
is an internationally recognized leader in assisted reproductive
technologies, with a focus on in vitro fertilization and culture
of mammalian embryos, including the related areas of oocyte
maturation, micromanipulation, and cryopreservation of
embryos and oocytes. Most of his research has been
conducted with cattle and horses.
