Dear friends in Christ,
Happy Easter! Christ is risen! Alleluia! Alleluia! Today is
the final day of the Easter octave. It's such an important
feast for us, we celebrate it for eight glorious days. In fact,
the Easter season continues for 50 days (as opposed to the
40 days of Lent), so let us celebrate with hearts and minds
renewed in the Risen Christ! Alleluia!
Today, the 2nd Sunday of Easter, is also known as Divine
Mercy Sunday, a day dedicated to the Divine Mercy devotion that focuses on the mercy of God the Father through
His Son, Jesus. St. Faustina, a 20th century Polish nun,
promoted the devotion in her life and the late Pope John
Paul II also had a great devotion to it and authorized the first
celebration of a particular Divine Mercy Sunday in 2001. Let
us all recall the mercy of God in this great Easter season.
To mark Divine Mercy Sunday, Fr. Orrin will lead a service at 3 p.m. today in the chapel. There will be a reading of
Scripture and a reflection on the Divine Mercy as it relates
to the Eucharist. We’ll have a time of quiet reflection and
adoration, and then a recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
All are invited to join us for this time of prayer in thanksgiving for the gift of the Divine Mercy to the Church.
Today we also welcome 27 of our brothers and sisters
into the Catholic faith today at the 9 a.m. Mass as they
make their Profession of Faith, are confirmed and receive
Holy Eucharist for the first time. They join the 32 who were
baptized at the Easter Vigil last week. My thanks to our
wonderful RCIA team that has prepared these 59 new Catholics over the past year (and more in some instances). Do
you have a family member or friend interested in learning
more about our Catholic faith? Invite them to “come and
see” what the Church is all about. My thanks to Julie Cook,
Director of RCIA, Deacon Jack Alexander and all the RCIA
team for “walking the walk” with those who join our church.
We have even more who are in preparation to join our faith
later in the year.
I would be remiss if I did not again thank all of the wonderful people who made possible the celebration of the Triduum and Easter Sunday. Those days are always so busy
and full of many liturgies with an infinite number of details to
attend to, but our staff and volunteers really outdid themselves to make them flow so flawlessly. My special thanks
to Carol Moses and Ofelia Carrasco in our Liturgy Department, along with the many women of our Art & Environment
committee, headed by Patty Arnett. They worked multiple
hours each day to get the church prepped and ready. Bridget Wenk and all in our various choirs and Music Department led us beautifully to worship the Risen Christ in song.
Thank you one and all. A special thank you to our facilities
supervisor, David Prieto, and his staff who worked extra
hours climbing ladders, hanging banners, changing lights,
setting up tables and speakers. There are numerous others
who stopped by for a day or two, or maybe just lent a hand
for a couple of hours. Extra special thanks to our deacons,
altar servers, EMHCs, sacristans, ushers and greeters and

all liturgical ministers. Your gift of your time and talent was a
true show of Stewardship, something we are all called to do.
I encourage all of us to “step up” in these Easter days and
become great servants of Christ’s Church through our own
efforts in Stewardship.
I won’t say that “Easter is behind us.” Easter is always
ahead of us! But our immediate attention now turns to our
coming 30th annual Spring Festival, April 25-26. That’s just
three weeks from today. The Festival core committee is in
full preparation mode and your help is especially needed.
The Festival booth will be open today and the next two
weekends for ticket sales, T-shirts, barbecue dinner tickets
and volunteer sign-ups. Raffle tickets for a chance to win a
new Chevrolet are also for sale, and don’t forget to sell
those that were mailed to you and return your stubs and
money. The raffle is the top fundraiser of the Festival so
please support it generously. We truly need your help and
assistance. Stop by and volunteer for a shift or two, or
maybe be chairperson for a ride or game (it’s easier than
you think). Just a few hours of your time in service to the
community makes the Spring Festival a great success.
Items are still needed for the auction, both live and silent.
Remember financial donations are also welcomed so that
the team might buy high quality items to put in the auction.
Also, now is the time to work on some “spring cleaning”
of your garage and attics for items that can be donated to
our flea market booth. That’s always a big part of the Festival, so clean out some items and donate them for the rummage sale. I can tell you it is a high priority for the rectory.
I’m determined to clean my garage and closet. I know I said
that last year, but this time I really mean it! We’ll have more
details next week on when to bring them to the church, but
get prepared now. Also, it’s time for you bakers to start
warming up your ovens for items to donate for the bake sale
and Sweet Shop!
For those of you who regularly attend the 5 p.m. Mass
on Sunday, please note that the Mass on April 26 will not be
held. At the recommendation of the Festival Committee,
Liturgy and Music departments, and the Parish Pastoral
Council we are going to cancel it this week only. It traditionally has not been well attended on Festival Sunday (less
than 150 people), and with the bleed over of music and
noise from the Festival grounds, not to mention the dirt and
grime that is tracked in by visitors who want to "peek in," it's
not a very prayerful experience. We're dropping it for this
one day only on account of Spring Festival, and we'll evaluate it afterwards to see if we want to do it in future years.

Celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday
Although it would be difficult to pinpoint exactly what a
“correct” celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday would look
like, we know from Vatican documents and from what Jesus Himself asked for through the Diary of St. Faustina,
what it should contain.
Pope John Paul II said that he had fulfilled the will of
Christ by instituting this Feast of Divine Mercy. We should
look at what Christ said about this celebration. Many might
be surprised at what He didn’t ask for on that feast day.
Jesus gave the instructions for the feast to St. Faustina
and she faithfully recorded them in her diary. Jesus said
that “the Feast of Mercy was a refuge and shelter for all
souls, and especially for poor sinners” (Diary, 699). Jesus
never asked us to recite the Chaplet on the Feast of Mercy.
He never asked for separate Masses or adoration at 3 p.m.
So what did Jesus ask us to do? That can be found in
diary entry No. 206. Jesus said “On the day of the Feast of
Mercy, you will go through the whole world and bring fainting souls to the spring of My mercy. I shall heal and
strengthen them.” Notice that Jesus was trying to get us to
“go” out, not stay “in.” Jesus said that the loss of each soul
plunges Him into mortal sadness (Diary, 1397). We need to
do our very best to “go” out and evangelize poor sinners,
inviting them to the feast, thus helping Jesus with His deepest desire to save these poor sinners. Adoration is good,
the Chaplet is good, but on the Feast of Mercy don’t you
think that Jesus would rather have us focus on inviting others (sinners) to His feast, to the Eucharist, so that He can
heal and strengthen them?
The readings for this Octave Sunday of Easter did not
change when Divine Mercy Sunday was instituted. They
were already perfect for this day. Providently, the Gospel is
always the same for this day (John 20:19-31) and is about
the institution of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and about
trusting in Jesus. The Responsorial Psalm is always about
the Lord’s mercy.
The image is of the Resurrected Christ walking into the
Upper Room, showing the Apostles His wounds and bestowing on them the power of the Holy Spirit to forgive sins.
The two rays of light, one red, the other, pale like water,
represent the Sacraments of Communion and Reconciliation. We can’t forget the words “Jesus, I trust in You” on the
image that helps us to remember to trust in Jesus.
So what would a “correct” celebration look like? Let’s
start with a resolution to help Jesus save souls. Let’s do
everything within our power to alleviate the pain and sorrow
that He experiences when souls are
lost. Let’s focus on reaching out to poor
sinners, those Easter-only and fallenaway Catholics, the “fainting souls,”
and invite them to the Feast of Divine
Mercy.

First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion
Information and Registration Meeting for 2015-16
Parents of children entering 2nd-5th grade are invited to learn
about the sacrament preparation process and register their
children for the celebration of the First Reconciliation and
First Eucharist during the fall 2015 or spring 2016. Children
must be baptized in the Catholic faith and have had formal
Religious Education/for one year prior. Join us from 7-8:30
p.m. on Monday, May 4 OR Thursday, May 7 in the Parish
Hall.
Registration for Catholic Faith Camp (CFC)
Catholic Faith Camp (formerly Catholic Children's Camp) will
be held July 20-24. Registration for volunteers and participants will open online on May 1.
CFC is a week of activities ending with Mass on Friday. CFC
is open to elementary children entering 3rd grade through
entering 6th grade in the fall of 2015.

Friday Morning Women’s Bible Study
The Friday Morning Women’s Bible Study is on the eternal

Parent Meeting: All parents who have a student in Rise
are encouraged to attend our parent meeting from 7-8 p.m.
on Monday, April 13 in the chapel. The meeting will go
over the content that will be covered at Rise on April 29.

Seniors seminar. Join us at 10 a.m. in the Community Center. Deputy Sheila Enloe of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department will speak on many safety topics. This event is
