Cubert Parish News Nowodhow an Bluw MAY 2015 Dreams Coming True It’s long been acknowledged that to meet one’s hero is to court disaster. After spending years, nay, sometimes decades, worshipping from afar, the reality is bound to fail to meet expectations. So, Paloma Faith, Stephen Fry, James Taylor, James Lee Burke etc., you can all breathe easy. I won’t be camping outside any of your doors! I’ll just carry on dreaming of perfect encounters. But, we all have different sorts of dreams. Mine usually involve cars. Fast, luxurious, and ridiculously expensive. A few weeks ago. Adrenaline! A race track. A Ferrari 458. Concentration. Rain. Wind. Heavy rain. A Lamborghini overtaken. Masses of Adrenaline. Masses of concentration. Disbelief. And then, the moment. An Aston Martin DB9!!!!!!! The imaginary ’phone call, “ So Billy (Piper), thanks for the invite to help you pick out some costumes for “ Secret Diary of a Call Girl II “, but I’ve just got to take a DB9 round the track“. Pouring rain. Massive concentration. Massive amounts of Adrenaline. Another Lambo’ overtaken! Euphoria. “Big Al”, has had his moment! So, did it live up to expectation? I can’t remember. It was all just a blur. Would I do it again? Too right I would! Anyway, I can accept imperfections. I live with me! Members, friends and our President enjoyed an excellent meal. Trophies for the 2014 Season were presented to successful members. Although rather smaller in numbers than usual, members enjoyed a fun evening culminating in a raffle with Colin Hunt, up to his usual tricks, donating a mystery prize. Our group having been slightly subdued because other people were having meals, the management later told us that we could have been more vocal – even indulging in an 'Oggie Shout'. Roll on next year for the Anglers! Rodney Phillips New double surf ski and website for Holywell Bay Surf Lifesaving Club ‘The Big Launch’ took place at noon on Sunday 12 April when Holywell Bay Surf Lifesaving Club launched their brand new double surf ski. Fundraising and sponsorship from C-Bay restaurant and bistro, Treguth Inn, Treworgans Holiday Park and Usfor design and printing financed the ski. Further information can be found on the club’s brand new dynamic website at www.holywellbayslsc.co.uk – launched on the day by club member Jeeka Griffin (www.majik-websites.co.uk). Founded in 1962, Holywell Bay SLSC strives to maintain lifesaving, not just for its members, but for the whole community through a combination of determination, courage, teamwork and an awful lot of fun! The club trains our local children from the age of 6 and by a system of age and ability related programs, create opportunities for them to become fully trained and qualified lifeguards. Several of our children have become lifeguards on Holywell Beach and through vigilance and service maintain a safe environment for us all to enjoy. Beach training for nippers and juniors resumes on Saturday 2 May at 9.45am sharp! On a serious note, in the first week of April this year, Chris Bisson, Rhys Ellis-Davies, Mike Gough and Steve Peck - all senior club members at Holywell Bay rescued 4 people from the sea in separate incidents. Full time lifeguards are not employed until May, but club members still maintain an unofficial watch over the sea even when surfing socially. Bob Heayel Email : [email protected] Web Site : www.cubertnewsletter.co.uk MAY 2015 CUBERT METHODIST CHURCH 10 The story is told of a farmer who had lived on the same farm all his life. It was a good farm, but with passing years, the farmer began to tire of it. He longed for a change – for something “better.” Every day he found a new reason for criticising some feature of the old place. Finally, he decided to sell and called an estate agent to value the farm for sale. As one might expect, it emphasized all the farm’s advantages; ideal location, modern equipment, healthy stock, acres of fertile ground etc. Before placing the ad in the newspaper the agent rang the farmer and read out the copy for his approval. When he had finished, the farmer cried out, “Hold everything! I’ve changed my mind; I’m not going to sell. I’ve been looking for a place like that all my life.” Our Sunday services during May will be led by the following: May 3rd Ann Redfern 11am 10th Christine Roberts 11am th 17 Gareth Jones 11am 24th John Hogarth 11am 31st Reverend Sandy Osgerby 11.15am Pentecost Sunday 24th May will be our 3rd Anniversary in the new chapel. The top ten birds, with figures per. Garden is as follows: House Sparrow (2.9), Starling (2.7), Blackbird (2.7), Blue Tit (2.7), Wood Pigeon (2), Chaffinch (1.4), Robin (1.4), Great Tit (1.4), Goldfinch (1.3), Collared Dove (1.2). Locally our figures were vastly different, with Goldfinches and Chaffinches the most numerous by far. The Isles of Scilly has proved a haven for Greenfinches, possibly by being so isolated and thus being able to miss the disease that this species had on the mainland. Also, the Islands, in late March, recorded an extremely rare male Desert Wheatear. Dick Twinney, in his wildlife article in the Newquay Voice on 1st April, reported a rare sighting of a 'Green-Billed Irish Chough' and showed a sketch of one supposedly seen by him on Porth Island, Newquay. No doubt several locals headed there to catch a glimpse of this bird, but their visit would have been pointless as Dick Twinney's bird would have been consigned to the pages of 'April Fool' jokes; convincing as I suspect it was to many! Apart from the Chough we all know, with red legs and beak, there is the Alpine Chough which has a shorter, yellow beak and coral red legs. Rodney Phillips LOCAL INTEREST Cubert Parish Footpath & Bridleway Association News I saw the first swallow fluttering above Holywell Road at 12.40 on 13th April '15. I couldn't believe my eyes. What an optimistic sign! We managed to deliver our Walks pamphlets to 95% of the parish outlets in time for Easter. Unfortunately, they will need amending before the next print-run of a 1,000. This is due to the demise of Western Greyhound bus company and the sad closure of the Anvil Restaurant. We really miss going there and wish Colin “Good Health and Recovery”. We also hope Norman Bradder is recovering from being unwell. As Norman and I can no longer do footpath maintenance now, our Committee have realised that we have too few volunteers to cope. We therefore agree that we need a conscientious person who we can pay the basic wage to work on our paths from now on. We can arrange training for you. We have all the equipment; from loppers right up to big strimmers and safety gear. We would ask you to contact our Chairman, Mike Hawken, on 01637 830256 if you are interested. If you see a sit-on mower cutting the grass in the youth park or at the allotments and also cutting the footpaths, that is our mower with Mike aboard. One day a week should keep our maintenance up to schedule, if you wish to apply. Late News is that a farmer has ploughed right up to the edge of the field on FP20 (opposite the Parish Hall). Our mower was unable to cut the grass! Terry Salmon 01637 830682. P.S. I was continuing my walk through Somerset en route to Winchester last Autumn, along a quiet lane, when I spied an inscribed stone. It marks the birthplace of St. Dunstan, in a hut there, in 909AD. He went on to become Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey and, being a great scholar, teacher, musician and goldsmith, ended up as Archbishop of Canterbury until 988AD! He was advisor to King Alfred and improved many things for Saxon England, the church and monastic management. I took my wife there recently to show her the old wayside stone and was amazed to see a new housing estate enclosing and overshadowing it! Sad. In particular we are looking for anyone who may have photographs, documents or artefacts relating to the Parish or surrounding area that might be available for display at an exhibition we are hoping to hold later this year that will look at the history of where we live. Pronunciation And Derivation Now I understand all must be balanced (Heard it, I don't know anyone on the inside) So politicians when you've had a grilling Are each of you evenly brown either side? I heard it stated on my local programme And I heard it on a national one too, So you should take care all politicians It's going to be very painful for you. Perhaps you enjoy all the politicking, Around travel and debate you are willing, But I'd go away and hide if I were you 'Cos “the Politicians will get a grilling”! Having come across many place names since editing the newsletter, I have been challenged on my pronunciation of Joy. those names. As a consequence ! am also learning where the names originated. Courtesy of Lloyd Spencer, who compiled the detail some time ago and did feature them in the Newsletter at that time, I will be re-publishing the detail of place names as I come across them especially for those of us ‘NEW’ to the area. Judy CARINES: pronounced Cranus (part of) Villa de Crou 1302 &1327Crouwortheynys c1348 Crowarthenes 1473 Cranes c1690. krow “hut” + worth + enys “land beside a river”. The usual meaning of enys is “island” but when it occurs inland may mean “land beside a river” or “isolated, remote spot”. In this instance both interpretations are possible. The original holding (1302 & 1327) was divided into separate holdings now known as Carines, [and Little Carines], Colgrease and Carevick. The early spellings show how Carines derives its local pronunciation of crāne’-us rather than car-eens’. Although the day in Cornwall started with thick mist and fog, it cleared for a couple of hours just before the meeting started to give us another beautiful sunny afternoon, before the mist rolled in again! The meeting was opened with the singing of Jerusalem, as usual. Veronica has been voted in as our President for another year (by popular demand) and she welcomed all those present. We now have 43 paid up members and several visitors each month attending. The minutes of the last meeting were read and signed. A round up of business included a reminder of up and coming events: Jazz in the Park will take place in Crantock Village on Tuesday 4 August and Crantock WI will have a raffle stall. Each raffle ticket purchased will be assigned a corresponding number on a gift bag containing a goody of some description – everyone will be a winner! WI lunch at Spires Restaurant (part of Truro College) on 28 May. WI lunch at Trevaskis Farm, Connor Downs on 1 July. 2016 WI calendars and diaries available to order now from Maggie and Mary. A special thank you to Salli who has now produced our members programme of events and competitions for 2015/2016. Gail explained about the WI MCS system (Membership Communication System), which holds members information. The WI also have a training environment (The Moodle) which members can use where they can access information about events and competitions, download forms etc, interact with other members through discussion forums and learn new skills. To access the Moodle members will need their WI membership number (available from Gail). After tea and refreshments our entertainment for the afternoon was the Celtic Chords Barbershop Chorus. The Chorus are a group of ladies who come for all over Cornwall and meet once a week at Truro College to practice. They preformed a variety of musical numbers in Barbershop style including numbers from Jerry Lee Lewis, Westlife and several popular West End shows. There was of course some audience participation and members were asked to join in with singing and actions to one musical number. This seemed to go down quite well judging by the laughter. The Chorus are now practicing in earnest for a National competition in Wales in July and we wish them every success. The competition for members this month was “A flower buttonhole”. 1st prize was awarded to Linda, 2nd to Mary and 3rd to Salli. Salli has sourced a small (but beautiful) competition cup to be awarded to the overall top winner at the end of the year. The meeting finished with presentation of birthday posies, the usual monthly raffle and the National Anthem, accompanied by the Chorus. The next meeting will be Tuesday 12 May 2015 at 2pm at Crantock Village Hall. This will be our Resolution Meeting and although there will be no speaker there will be the usual monthly competition “Item knitted by you’. New members and visitors will be very welcome. Gail-lynne Milne MAY 2015 PENHALE RE-DEVELOPMENT COMMENTS 25 On behalf of Comparo Limited and the Penhale project team 15 April 2015 Thank you to the 100 or so people who came to the exhibition of preliminary proposals for Penhale on 26 March. It was a busy session and the consultants for the project appreciated the interest shown by residents of Holywell and Cubert. Thank you, too, for the many responses through comments forms and the Penhale website. Your comments have now been collated and discussed by the Penhale team. A full report will be included in the Statement of Community Involvement with the planning application. What did you say? Overall, there was a positive response to redeveloping the former army camp for mixed use, predominantly residential. We asked about types of houses and, although starter and family homes were favoured, there was a general preference for a mixture of types and tenures. It was too early to show details of design and materials, but several respondents offered suggestions. Main points of concern were traffic on the local roads, particularly the summertime queueing for the National Trust car park, and how to protect, manage and monitor the environment and wildlife. Other comments included queries on the capacity of local services to accommodate new development. We are looking closely into all concerns. You wanted to know more about non-residential buildings on the site. Will they complement existing services and local facilities? That’s the easy one to answer: yes. All concerns and helpful ideas are being carefully considered and discussed with the statutory consultees such as English Nature, National Trust, Cornwall Wildlife Trust and South West Water as well as, of course, with Cornwall Council. What happens next? A public display of final proposals is due to be held in early June. The planning application will be submitted this summer. We will be publicising the June event in Cubert News, Perranzabuloe Parish News and on the Penhale website. Luckily, this paid off, as a Crantock Village Trail had been organised to get our members out and about exploring the centre of the village. To make things a little easier we met in the Memorial Hall and once again we were delighted to welcome some new members in addition to familiar friends. After a cup of tea and a chat, a good number set off in the sunshine armed with a list of some of the many interesting objects, signs and buildings to be found around the village. The trail took us around the green and up to the church, and gave everyone a chance to look more closely at places we so easily pass by. Meanwhile, those who hadn’t felt able to join us on our walk had the chance to complete their Village Wordsearch and undertake a ‘virtual trail’ with photos of the parts of Crantock the rest of the group had set out to explore. Arriving back at the Memorial Hall for another ‘cuppa’ with delicious cakes and biscuits, we had a chance to compare findings and to look at an interesting selection of old photographs about the towns and villages of Cornwall. We were especially pleased to learn that one of our members had co-written books on St Newlyn East which we had on display. The beautifully painted mural of Crantock around the walls of the hall gave us a chance to see where we had been- luckily everyone had been on their best behaviour, so we hadn’t been obliged to put anyone in the village stocks behind the church! As always, the friendly, relaxed atmosphere quickly put everyone at ease and next month we will be back in our usual venue of the Village Hall. However, the cafe will once again take place one week later than normal to avoid the May Day holiday so we will be meeting on Monday 11th May from 2pm to 4pm. We are always pleased to welcome new members so should you need further information about our Memory Cafe please contact Di on 01637 830544 or Joan on 01637 831347 or visit our website www.crantockmemorycafe.org.uk CHARITY BIKE RIDE MAY 2015 27 So what am I doing ? its a 100km night ride around London - my start time is 23.20 and its happening on 6/7 June (www.nightrider.org) Why am I doing it ? I would just like to update you on a few things that have been happening…. Firstly, let me tell you what has been going on in Cornwall Council. As I am sure you are aware, it has been a challenging year for all councils, and our ongoing budget pressures. The council agreed its five year budget in November which sees budget cuts of £196 million. This will clearly have an impact on all services. Not only have there been major cuts to staff numbers (including senior managers) but it means a big reduction in service budgets. As local Ward Member, a large part of my time has been spent working with officers and partners to look at how we preserve services for the area as much as possible. One of my many concerns has been the A3075 and Cubert Crossroads, which I have mentioned previously in my monthly reports. Some good news; I have worked incredibly hard to ensure that Cubert Crossroads and the A3075 will be looked at as part of the wider A30 dualling works. On top of this, I have now secured a meeting with the Head of Planning and Head of Highways at Cornwall Council to ensure that they acknowledge the impact of housing developments in Newquay and along the A3075 that could cause extra pressure on this road. I am determined to ensure that this will be considered in any planning decisions. Let’s hope they do! Public transport, and particularly the bus network, has been an on-going issue in the Ward. After the loss of some bus services in Mitchell we managed to get some new buses reinstated. Following the closure of Western Greyhound, Cornwall Council is working hard with bus operators to ensure a suitable bus service exists. After the initial 48 hrs of hard work to simply get a bus service up and running we need to monitor how effective it is and make changes if possible. Last year, the pedestrian crossing in Goonhavern was pending installation, and I am glad to say it has now been completed and having a good effect on slowing traffic down plus making the road much safer for pedestrians. Poor Crantock has suffered lots of flooding. I have been in several meetings with South West Water and CORMAC and the Parish Council to look at solutions. Some of these issues have now been dealt with including installing new lining in the pipes by South West Water, but this work is on-going. As you are probably aware I sit on Central Planning Committee and the Health Scrutiny Committee at Cornwall Council. Two very big committees I must say! A large number of public health services are currently being merged into Cornwall Council by the NHS and partners that will hopefully run a more efficient service. This is a positive step. Part of the committee’s role is to scrutinise all health service providers, which we hope helps improve overall service throughout Cornwall. To round things off, Planning, Planning, Planning! As I sit on the Central Planning Committee I have to make decisions on applications that come before me. Sometimes these are very difficult to make and I am aware of the personal impact on people. In my ward I have had a number of Planning applications in the last year; some small, some large. I believe in the localism approach in my area and when there are a number of opinions expressed to me – either for or against an application – I have often called it in to Committee so it can be democratically decided. I work an awful lot with the parish councils and always note their opinions that are vital to the local area. To round things off, I would like to thank my former Community Network Manager, Mark O’Brien for his support for the last year. As I have mentioned before, I have now started working with Guy Thomas who has replaced Mark and we have started off really well together and he is getting up to speed within the ward. And that means it’s over to you Guy. How are you getting on in your first month…… Hi Lisa…….Is it only a month? It has been busy busy meeting as many people as possible in the community. It is really great to be working back within the community again after having a countywide role for the last three years. As you know, there have been a number of changes at Cornwall council, and one of the positive ones is an increase in the number of Community Link Officers. What are Community Link Officers I hear you say?!.... Our role is to be a stronger link to support local communities and to be a conduit between Cornwall Council and the local area. My focus is entirely on the St Agnes and Perranporth Community Network, which covers St Newlyn East, Perranzabuloe, St Agnes, St Allen, Cubert and Crantock. I have been given a nice meaty project in my first week which was to be the community link for the A30 Public Engagement Days which 800 people attended. The days were used to capture local opinions about the upcoming A30 improvements and surrounding network, to help inform a design brief. It was great to meet so many from the community and to hear their voice. On that note, my next Community Network Panel meeting is Thursday 11th June at 6.30pm at Perranzabuloe Parish Rooms. You are all welcome to come along and it would be great to meet you. Back to you Lisa…………………………Thanks Guy. Speak to you all next month…………Best wishes to you all Lisa Gorman, Cornwall Councillor …and Guy Thomas (Community Area Manager, Mid Cornwall) DIARY MAY 2015 32 REGULAR EVENTS Day / Event Time Page MONDAYS Toddler Club - Term Time Craft & Chat Club Sing4Fun Perranporth Memory Café (2nd Monday) TUESDAYS Book Sale St Cubert Church Room Short Mat Bowls WEDNESDAYS Goonhavern WI (1st Wed) Book Sale Crantock Memorial Hall Quiz At The Treguth Youth Club - Term Time 10:00 to 12:00 13:00 to 15:00 19:00 to 20:15 13:45 to 16:00 10:00 to 12:00 19:00 to 21:00 19:30 10:00 to 12:00 21:30 18:00 to 19:30 1 Fri 1 Fri 10 10, 11 10 11 11 5 19 April 18 10 THURSDAYS Short Mat Bowls Bible Study (3rd Thursday) FRIDAYS Charity Quiz @ Smugglers Den Whist SUNDAYS Folk Jam Night @ Old Albion (last Sunday of the month) EVENTS MAY 2015 2 2 3 3 4 Sat Sat Sun Sun Mon 4 Mon 9 Sat 10 Sun 10 Sun 11 Mon 12 Tues 15 Fri 20 Wed 23 Sat 23 Sat 14:00 to 16:30 19:30 to 21:00 5 23 Sat 10 21:00 14:00 23 11 24 Sun 25 Mon 27 Wed 30 Sat See Page 20 12 Live Music @ Smugglers 19:30 Live Music @ Cornishman 20:00 Holywell SLSC Nippers & Junior Training 09:45 9 Live Music @ Smugglers 20 Live Music @ Smugglers 20 Live Music @ Cornishman 15:00 12 BANK HOLIDAY Live Music @ Smugglers Midday & 14:30 20 "DINNER" @ Lane Theatre 20:00 April Open Mic Night @ Treguth 20:30 18 Trevornick 10 Race @ 10:30 6 Crantock Memory Café @ 14:00 26 Crantock WI @ 14:00 24 Cubert School Summer Fete @ 15:15 - 18:30 21 Parish Council Meeting @ 19:00 5 Newquay Male Voice Choir @ 19:30 17 Cubert History Group @ 10:30 15 Sun & Stars @ Carnewas 18:30 Nat Trust 23 Live Music @ Cornishman 15:00 & 21:00 12 BANK HOLIDAY Bingo @ Cubert Village Hall 19:00 11, 22 Little Harbour Quiz @ Treguth 21:00 18, 23 EVENTS JUNE 2015 22 2 Tues Cubert Races From 17:15 3 Wed 6 Mon 7 Tues 9 Sat Goonhavern WI Haircut Demo @ 19:30 Charity Bike Night Ride Start In London Cubert Short Mat Bowling Club AGM @ 19:00 Newquay Male Voice Choir @ 19:00 7 19 27 5 17 EVENTS SEPTEMBER 2015 Cider & Folk Music Festival @ Old Albion Cider & Folk Music Festival @ Old 19 Sat Albion Cider & Folk Music Festival @ Old 20 Sun Albion 18 Fri 22 22 22 The views and opinions expressed in this Newsletter do not necessarily reflect those of the editor.
