Activity Based Volunteering
In the Autumn, in partnership with Cumbria County Council, Cumbria CVS will be
running three activity-based volunteer recruitment events - funded through the
Cumbria Armed Forces Community Covenant. They will promote volunteering
activities across Cumbria to a range of clients, especially members of the ex-service
community (military veterans).
They will be a great opportunity for people to try a number of volunteering activities
as well as access a wide range of advice and support:

North West Film Archive will be presenting two films of local interest ‘Barrow &
Lakeland Industrial Neighbour’ and ‘Future Graftsmens’
The producers of this year’s pantomime will be on the search for local talent at our
celebration. They will be looking for both sexes aged between 8 and 15 to audition
for a place in the Junior Ensemble. Successful auditionees will participate in
rehearsals and perform in the show, working with professional dancers and learning
under the direction of an expert choreographer and director.

Building Better Opportunities Workshop
Monday 15 June
10am - 4pm
The Forum, 28 Duke Street, Barrow, LA14 1HH
In June 2015, a new European Social Fund (ESF) funded programme will be
launched to include projects that support people who are furthest removed from the
labour market into employment.
This Building Better Opportunities programme will not only provide a range of
activities to build people’s confidence and aspirations, but also measures to help
remove barriers to employment in areas such as health, finance and digital.
Organisations will be expected to work in partnership to deliver this programme.
The Big Lottery Fund will match the European funding, thus effectively doubling the
impact and scope of projects, and providing a more straightforward route to
European funding for the voluntary and community sector.
Building Better Opportunities Workshop
Will provide voluntary and community sector organisations with a better

understanding of what it means to be part of an ESF funded programme. The

Get on Track Walks
A full programme of monthly 2-3 hour walks will run in 2015, changing the day to the
first Thursday of each month. Each walk has been mapped out using every
station between Grange and Millom.
The walks are about 5 miles, taking up to 3 hours and can be over rough ground,
occasionally very wet underfoot. Most walks end in the vicinity of an agreeable place
to eat and drink. New walkers will be made very welcome.

(part of Barrow Walking Festival), walk starts at Barrow
Station 10.30am.

Hampsfell Hotel-Grange Station. Walk starts at 10.50am,
departs from Barrow Station 10.09am.
The first named is the station where the walk begins, the last named where it ends.
Assuming the timetable does not change for 2015, the walk start time coincides with
the arrival of the 10.10am train from Barrow.

Community Car Boot Sale

Cars can arrive to set up after 8.30am. Cost £7. Cars are generally allocated 2 car

Walk to Remember
Friday 26 June
Our Walk to Remember returns for its ninth year. This year it returns to its ladies-only
format. The walk is a fantastic fun event - inspired by remembering loved ones - to
raise essential funds for our Hospice. Walkers can choose either the original 7-mile
moonlit walk starting from Hawcoat Park, Barrow at 10pm, or the 11-mile Walk to
Remember Extra encouraging everyone to “Go the extra miles for St. Mary’s” –
starting from the Hospice at 9pm. To get involved simply register online

Also volunteers are needed on the night as marshals and to serve refreshments.

Cross Bay Walk Challenge
Saturday 30 May 2015
Cumbria Wildlife Trust is inviting people to ‘walk for wildlife’ as it announces its
annual Walk across the Bay over the iconic Morecambe Bay Sands.
The eight-mile sponsored walk will be led by the Queen’s Guide to the Sands,
Cedric Robinson, in the afternoon and will take in spectacular views of well-known
sites from the unusual perspective of the Sands, such as Humphrey Head and
Arnside Knott.
Booking is essential. You can either complete a Cross Bay Walk Challenge 2015

Participants are asked to arrange their own transportation after the walk.

Furness Breast Cancer Support Group

Positive Living Programme
Thursdays 23 July, 30 July, 6 August, 13 August, 20 August and 27 August
1pm – 4pm at The Bradbury Centre, St George’s Road, Millom.
The positive living programme is a six -week course for anyone who has been told
they have a life threatening illness and their family & friends.
The course introduces different methods of relaxation including controlling anxious
thoughts and reducing anxiety through breathing techniques, relaxation and adapted
Tai Chi seated exercise.
You will be given information so you can practice your stress management
techniques at home and learn to draw on them at times of pressure and anxiety.
We can offer advice on how to incorporate what you’ve learnt into your daily life after
the course.

Women’s Community Matters (WCM)
We are looking for donations of pre-owned children’s and baby clothing.
Children’s and Baby clothing wanted for the WCM Clothes Bank – all clothing is
donated to families the centre is working with who find themselves in difficult
circumstances and require some support.
You can drop off your donations to the Centre at
Suite 1, 22A Duke St, Barrow LA14 1HH.

arrange something.
Barrow Island Ruby - Club House Refurbishment
Barrow Island Rugby have nearly finished the extension and refurbishment on their
club house and we would like to offer it to local communities to hold meetings or
functions through the day at a small cost.
We have plenty of parking space, ladies toilets, men's toilets and disabled toilets also
a kitchen to prepare refreshments in.

St Mary’s Hospice
We have Community Neighbour Volunteers available now to visit in Barrow,
Dalton, Millom, Grange and Windermere areas.
If one of your patients/service users has a life shortening diagnosis and has little help
or is lonely especially through the week then a visit from one of our Neighbours may
add a little life to that person’s day or week.

Our volunteers are all DBS checked and trained but most of all they are just nice
people who want to help out in their local community.
This service relies on referrals from community health professionals and
community organisations.

Volunteer Opportunities
Hospice Volunteering - looking for a simple way to give something back?
Val Stangoe CEO: "Hospices couldn’t survive without volunteers. I say this every
time I speak on behalf of the hospice and I really mean it. Honestly, without
volunteers we just couldn’t, wouldn’t, survive."
We're currently recruiting more volunteers to help in the warehouse at Barrow and in
the Grange-over-Sands shop on Saturdays and Sundays. If you are interested in

Funding Opportunities
The NCI (Neighbourhood Care Independence) Small Grant Fund is available
again this year.
Small community groups and voluntary organisations or associations can apply for
up to £500
To apply for a grant from this programme you must be a charity or community group
providing services for:
Adults over 65
Some vulnerable adults under 65
People who require services or support to help them remain independent at
home
Volunteer-led groups such as luncheon clubs, “coffee and crack” groups,
practical or social activities to reach more people within their communities
through extending services, training current and recruiting new volunteers
helping to extend the reach of the service within a given community

The Types of Organisations We Can Fund
Constituted* community groups and voluntary organisations or associations - with a
social purpose and with at least 3 unrelated people aged over 18 on the
management committee
*to be a constituted organisation, a group or organisation will need to have a
governing document, e.g. a set of rule, which sets out how the organisation works,
and does not allow profit to be taken. Applicants will be required to attach a signed
and dated governing document or set of operating rules with their application form.
If you are not currently constituted then Cumbria CVS can assist you with this simple
process.
Programme Criteria
We will support community organisations and groups with projects and activities
which meet each of the following criteria:
Your project aims to
support an improvement in health and well-being in your community
target people who are at a higher risk of poor health.
ensure that there is community participation in the project, and
Your project is local
Your project is relevant, practical and can make a positive difference to the
local community

There is no deadline for applications but once all the funding has been allocated we
will not be able to process any further applications. Funding awarded must be spent
before April 2016.
