What is the WA Disability Abuse Inquiry?
People with Disabilities WA and Developmental
Disability WA are disability advocacy
organisations in WA.
Sometimes we talk to people about problems in
the community.
This is called a consultation or an inquiry.
What to tell us
In this inquiry, we want to know about abuse or
neglect that might have happened to you.
When we talk about violence, abuse or neglect,
we mean –
 Verbal abuse
For example, people say things that make you
feel bad

 Sexual abuse
For example, someone touches your body and
does things to you that you do not like or want
them to do
Sexual abuse is also when people makes you
do sexual things that you do not want to do
 Financial abuse
For example, someone takes your money. It is
also when you do not have a say in how
someone spends your money
 Physical abuse
For example, someone hurts you by hitting you
or kicking you. It may also be when someone
holds you down.
 Neglect
For example, you do not get the care you need
to be clean and comfortable. It may also be
when someone stops you having enough food
or drink.

Or it might be when someone doesn’t take you
to the doctors or doesn’t give you your
medicine.

Abuse can happen anywhere, at any time.
You can tell us about violence, abuse and
neglect that happened at
 A day service
 A house
 School or work
 At respite
 In prison
 In hospital
 On a bus or in a taxi
 In other places where you get services

How to tell us
You can phone the Confidential Hotline
from 9am to 6pm on Saturday 13th June.
The number is 1800 193 331.
The people who will answer the phone on that
day will be advocates and counsellors.
They are people who are trained to help you.
You don’t have to tell us your name.
Someone else can help you tell your story.
It could be a relative or friend you trust.
It could be a member of staff you trust.
It could be another person you trust.

 When we do that, other people will be able to
read your story
 Tell us if you do not want other people to read
your story
We won’t tell anyone else your private
information.
Your safety
It is against the law for anyone to do bad things
to you because you told us what you think.
If you need to tell us about someone and you
are worried about what they will do
 you can ask us to keep it confidential
You can also ask to use our advocacy services.
We can give you information and advice to help
you to be safe.
We can help you make your own decisions.
We can help you speak up for your rights.
