Resolutions for 2015 session, Deloraine, Tasmania
1. That the General Assembly, recognising the grave danger to international peace and security
posed by religious extremism, and particularly the actions of terrorist groups (such as Da’esh
(Islamic State), Boko Haram, al-Qaeda and al-Shabaab) around the world (including in
countries like Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Tunisia, Nigeria and Kenya), urge the international
community to work together to prevent the spread of violent ideologies, by restricting the
movement and migration of foreign fighters, and restricting extremist religious group
meetings, teachings and practices.
2. That the General Assembly, recognising the importance of tolerance, encourage the
international community to respect religious freedoms and work to ensure respect for
religious diversity within their societies.
3. That the General Assembly, noting with sadness the number of commercial airliners that
have recently been lost, extend its condolences to the families of the victims of Malaysia
Airlines Flight MH370, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, AirAsia Flight 8501 and Germanwings
Flight 9525 tragedies, as well as all other airline disasters, and commit to a review of
worldwide airline practices, and restructuring of the industry to prevent further tragedies.
4. That the General Assembly, noting the lack of deterrent effect caused by capital punishment,
and the possibility for errors to be made in prosecution, reaffirming the right to life
enshrined in Article 6 of the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights, condemn
those countries still using the death penalty, and call upon all States to institute a
moratorium on its use, with a view to abolishing capital punishment entirely.
5. That the General Assembly, acknowledging the fundamental principle of the Charter of the
United Nations, of sovereign equality and respect for the territorial integrity and political
independence of all States, condemn Russia for its incursions into the sovereign territory of,
and its continued aggressive stance towards, Ukraine, and reaffirm its collective
commitment to the suppression of acts of aggression and other breaches of the peace.
6. That the General Assembly, congratulating Malala Yousafzai for her Nobel Peace Prize, call
upon all States to promote women’s rights, especially to education and freedom from
violence, and support the appointment of a female Secretary-General of the United Nations
in the 2016 elections.
7. That the General Assembly, reaffirming its commitment to international peace and security,
commend Iran and the countries involved in the six-nations talks for reaching an agreement
on Iran’s nuclear capability, and urge other nuclear States, such as North Korea, to follow
this example.
8. That the General Assembly, acknowledging the negative effects of the drug trade on health
and society, call upon all States to dedicate greater resources to the regulation of
international drug trafficking.
9. That the General Assembly, noting the globalisation of world trade, call upon all countries to
enact stricter controls on manufacturing supply chains.
10. That the General Assembly, noting the recent thawing of permafrost in northern regions,
and the exposure of mammoth and other remains, urge the international community to do
more to combat climate change, and act to ensure the protection of culturally and
scientifically significant items threatened by the effects of human activity on the
environment.
11. That the General Assembly, noting with concern the allegations of unnotified Russian
incursions into European waters and airspace, reaffirming its commitment to State
sovereignty, demand that all States commit to prioritising each other’s sovereignty and the
safety of civilians, over military and strategic advantage.
12. That the General Assembly, recognising the importance of protecting endangered species
from illegal and excessive hunting or fishing, noting with concern the prevalence of illegal
fishing in the Southern Ocean, and commending the members of the international
community that have burnt their ivory stockpiles, encourage all States to contribute greater
resources and take definitive action to stop poachers and the corruption that supports them,
and protect their natural heritage.
13. That the General Assembly, remembering the November 2012 resolution of this Assembly to
recognise the State of Palestine and grant it observer status, acknowledging the recent
accession of Palestine to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, call upon
Israel and all States to recognise and respect the sovereignty of the State of Palestine, accept
its accession to international bodies including the United Nations, and work to resolve the
remaining conflict in the Middle East.
14. That the General Assembly, acknowledging the continued challenges posed by climate
change, commit to contributing greater resources to renewable energy, especially in the
developing world.
15. That the General Assembly, acknowledging the successful contributions of the United
Nations Security Council over many decades, wishing to ensure its effectiveness for decades
into the future, resolve to reform the United Nations Security Council to better reflect the
current international system, and abolish the veto power.
16. That the General Assembly, sympathising with the people of Vanuatu who are recovering
after Cyclone Pam, acknowledging the challenges that food and water shortages cause
across the developing world, urge the international community to prioritise working
together to find new ways to ensure food and water security.
17. That the General Assembly, recognising the discrimination still suffered by homosexual and
transgendered people worldwide, reaffirming its commitment to the principle of nondiscrimination enshrined in Article 2(1) of the International Convention on Civil and Political
Rights, noting the 2008 Statement on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, call upon all
States to recognise and protect under law the freedom of sexual orientation and gender
identity.
18. That the General Assembly, reaffirming its commitment to the Convention on the Rights of
the Child, call upon all States to ensure the protection of children from sexual and physical
abuse, and other violence.
