ABOUT THE COVER: Homeowner Michelle with sons Billy, Tommy and baby Matthew. Story starts on page 14. Hot & Cold The Basics in Appliances Still Your Best Bet What if your refrigerator gave today’s weather report each time you opened the door? Or, your range printed directions to the nearest movie theater? Innovative? Yes. Smart. No. Technology for the sake of technology isn’t always a good thing. Just like bigger isn’t always better. More than anything, you want your refrigerator to keep your food and beverages at the right temperature, and to keep them fresh for as long as possible. You want your oven to provide a great cooking experience and food that tastes good. You want both to look great in your kitchen – to look as if they fit within the lifestyle you have chosen. I have been the midwest / midsouth distributor for Sub-Zero appliances for nearly 25 years, and for Wolf appliances the last seven. During that time the company has been as innovative as much as anybody. But the innovation has been to make what is, even better. For example, the new line of Sub-Zero’s now being introduced won’t look all that much different to the average consumer than they ever have. But inside, behind the interior shell, is a new air filter that kills bacteria and eliminates gases that deteriorate fresh fruits and vegetables. A water purification filter has been added so that the water you get from the dispenser is as fresh as water can be. And now the crisper and deli drawers are two to three degrees cooler than the rest of the refrigerator – at precisely the right temperature these foods like best. While it seems like I’ve heard it a million times, I am still amazed at how many people – when talking about refrigeration – call out Sub-Zero by name, and now Wolf as well. And even more interesting, how many owners say words that are nearly 100% identical to our marketing themes: Sub-Zero keeps fresh foods, fresher longer. It is because they see it. If 10 days after buying a fresh head of lettuce it still looks fresh in the crisper drawer, then seeing is believing. How much should the best in kitchen appliances cost? More than ever, you do get what you pay for. But, interestingly, the cost of a Sub-Zero / Wolf / ASKO kitchen is not very distant from other competitors top-line brands. Whether you are building a new home, or remodeling your existing kitchen, you can now purchase one of our appliance packages for around $15,000. For details, please see the list of dealers in this issue of Fantastic Kitchens magazine. If you happen to be in the Cincinnati marketplace, please plan to visit our manufacturer showroom. Here we display every Sub-Zero, Wolf, ASKO, Faber and Scotsman appliance made. We are proud to show it off, and to answer your questions – with absolutely no obligation. Thank you for letting us share your time. It is appreciated. In our old kitchen we were always saying things like ‘get out of the way!’ Building a new home meant that we could work with a kitchen designer and consider every detail to make sure it would work perfectly. We knew we absolutely had to have Sub-Zero.” Best Kitchen Buy “Sounds strange but for me it’s the sink. It’s my favorite part of the whole kitchen. It’s custom made from copper and the lip protrudes beyond the base so that it’s very easy to use. It’s absolutely indestructible. I’m thrilled with it.” Intimate Dinners or lots of People? “Lots of people. We do an extensive amount of entertaining with large groups, often forty or so for sit down dinner. We actually tell people that we didn’t ‘downsize’, we ‘right-sized’ as we built a home for the way we like to live! When I entertain I always try a new recipe.” Cook? “Extensively! As the children have grown I do it less on a daily basis but whenever our families get together it’s here they congregate. And I’m always cooking to entertain or fund-raise.” Favorite Cook Book “I have over 250 cookbooks! I really like Charlie Trotter’s books. I travel extensively and always try and pick up a Junior League or local group’s cookbook. You can find some great regional recipes that way.” Designer’s Thoughts “The large stucco hood above the Wolf range is an eyecatching feature in this kitchen with its built-in apothecary drawers and ironwork detail. It’s just one example of the large selection of design elements, textures, colors and materials used in here.” – Kristin Okeley, Kitchens by Design Who Did It? Our youngest daughter is a recent graduate of The Culinary Institute of America and now a cook at Primo restaurant in Maine. She was an enthusiastic part of the kitchen planning. When she’s home she is a whiz in the kitchen utilizing all aspects. She really loves it all especially the professional grade appliances.” Entertaining – How we do it “We love to have friends over for casual dining. The emphasis is on good conversation and delicious food.” How we Unwind “We like trying out new recipes. Almost every weekend we select a new recipe that looks appealing and we prepare it together. All time favorite cookbook author? Deborah Madison.” Best Buy for the Kitchen “The Wolf rangetop. It is an awesome cooktop that is so responsive and relatively easy to keep clean.” Favorite Restaurant? “We have two local restaurants that we love, both independently owned: Oakley’s Bistro and Sakura which is authentic Japanese.” Most Fun we’ve had in our Kitchen? “Christmas with our family. Every year, instead of exchanging gifts with each other we all make an ethnic themed meal together. Last year we had a Mexican Christmas theme and the year before that, Moroccan. We each research recipes and plan and prepare the meal all together. Our Mexican Christmas was enjoyed here in our new kitchen. It was such a lovely, memorable time.” Designer’s Thoughts “This is a good example of a clean, contemporary, functional kitchen that will stand the test of time. The color palette emphasizes earth, water and fire and creates a fresh, cool feeling. The high contrast between cabinetry and walls is very eyecatching.” – Kristin Okeley, Kitchens by Design Who Did It? The following Sunday it was Super Bowl – the Colts versus the Bears. We had unpacked boxes all around the house but it didn’t matter. Everyone was here. We won! It was a great start to our new home.” What we Like about our Wolf and Sub-Zero Appliances “They are both such an asset to the value of the home. The best thing about the Sub-Zero is its expanse. It’s set up so that it’s easy to find anything and easy to keep everything organized. The best thing about the Wolf is its size and the two ovens. They are very accurate for baking.” Designer’s Thoughts “The mix of finishes and separate areas for work, storage and display make this kitchen special. The most eye-catching feature is the custom hood. It is a feature unique to this kitchen.
