know someone who should be),
please call the church office with the
information. We truly do not mean to
leave anyone out. Thank You!
Prayer Chain – Are you in need of
prayer? Do you have something
hanging on your heart and want to
know that your brothers and sisters
in Christ are lifting you up? Are you
concerned about a loved one and
want some company in caring for
them? James 5:13-15 says, “Are
any among you suffering? They
should pray. Are any cheerful?
They should sing songs of praise.
Are any among you sick? They
should call for the elders of the
church and have them pray over
them, anointing them with oil in the
name of the Lord. The prayer of
faith will save the sick, and the Lord
will raise them up; and anyone who
has committed sins will be forgiven.”
Prayer requests may be
emailed to:
[email protected], or to
[email protected] or you
may call the office at 480-982-2259

The heavens declare His righteousness, and all the people see His
glory. Psalm 97:6
All Creatures of Our God and King
by St. Francis of Assisi
This hymn is considered to be one of the first genuine religious poems in the Italian language and was first entered in the 1935 Methodist Hymnal. Its text was adapted and revised by Gracia Grindal
who was a consultant for the language/theology subcommittee. She was responsible for changing the refrain's "he" to
"ye" so that it included both male and female attributions and was more consistent with the St.
Francis of Assisi text.
St. Francis was born in 1182 in central Italy and was the son of a rich merchant. He lived a carefree life as a member of a wealthy family but had a limited education so he eventually joined the
army where he was captured during the war. He returned home to renounce his life of ease, became a Christian, and seeking to tell others about the teachings of Christ, traveled around the
countryside to share his faith. He preached a gospel of sacrifice and brotherly love.
He led a simple life and became close to nature and animals. One day he came upon a flock of
birds who did not fly away when he approached so he began to preach to them, telling them to
praise and love their Creator who had provided them with feathers for clothes, wings to fly and the
necessities of life. He reminded them that they had God's guidance and protection.
It is said that St. Francis wrote this song during the summer of 1225 when he was very ill and losing
his eyesight. During this time of intense pain and suffering, a time of distressing quarrels between
the secular and spiritual powers in Assisi, he penned these words, in translation, "Song of Brother
Sun and of all Creatures". This hymn exhorts all creation, the sun and the moon, the birds, the
clouds, wind and fire, and all men of tender heart, to worship God - all these are creatures of our
God and King.
In 1919, the hymn was adapted and paraphrased by a rector, William Draper, who wanted to use it
in a children's worship festival in Leeds, England. Draper personifies all creatures and calls on
them to praise God.
All creatures of our God & King, Lift up your voice and with us sing, Allelujah! Allelujah!
Thou burning sun with golden beam, thou silver moon with softer gleam. O Praise Him, Allelujah!
Let all things their Creator bless and worship Him in humbleness. Allelujah! Allelujah!
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, and praise the Spirit, Three in One, O Praise Him, Allelujah!

JUNE MISSIONS
WOULD YOU LIKE
TO BUY AN ARK?
(NOT BUILD ONE!)
For the month of June we will be concentrating on collecting
donations for Heifer International. To date we have
collected $3,675.00 towards our “Ark Angel”.
The Mission Committee has decided
to make this a year long special
project for 2015.
JULY MISSIONS
For $5000.00 we can purchase a Gift
Ark through Heifer International and
become an "Ark Angel". We realize
this is a large amount of money, but it
would benefit families worldwide who
are poor and hungry. Every gift will
multiply for years to come.
Since the Superstition Mountain Elementary School was
closed, the Missions Team has adopted Avalon Public
Charter School on San Marcos in AJ. On May 4th, team
members Jeannine Allen, Norm Ross and Sandy Heath
met with the principal Mike McCord. We discussed
Desert Chapel adopting Avalon School and our missions
of Health Supplies, School Supplies and the Thanksgiving
Turkey boxes.
On the east wall of the Sanctuary,
there is an ark with a thermometer
that shows our progress, as each gift,
large or small, is added. Our committee has faith that because of the generosity of our congregation, we can
make this happen.
At present Avalon Charter School is the only K-8 Public
Charter School in AJ. There are 290 students and they
are looking to expand to 350 or 400 with the closing of
the other schools in the area. The class size is 25
students.
Please give this some thought
and prayer and decide if you want to
have a part in helping families to help
themselves.
For our July Missions we will be collecting School
Supplies for Avalon Public Charter School. Following is a
list of items needed for the school:
Backpacks, Spiral Notebooks, Lined Paper, #2 Pencils,
Glue Sticks, Spiral or Compositions Notebook, Kids
Scissors, Colored Pencils, Highlighters, Rulers, 2 Pocket
Folders, White Printer Paper, Kleenex, Hand Sanitizer.
We look forward to a long term relationship with Avalon
Public Charter School.

Modern Worship
At Desert Chapel
Come join us and bring a friend to Desert Chapel UMC for “Modern
Worship Service” on Wednesday Nights, at 7:00 pm. This is a
new style to reach people in a way they might not receive as easily on your average Sunday Morning as different people approach God in different ways.
We at Desert Chapel want to be “All things to All people” as seen in 1
Corinthians 9:22, and this is a step we can take to accomplish that.
If you are interested in being part of the planning group for this service, or are able to volunteer in any manner, especially musically
or technologically, contact JT at [email protected]
or (480) 296-4927.
We are so ecstatic to see what God does with this new service, and
invite you all to join us in this experience.”

June/July 2015Announcements
Although we discontinue the formal meetings during the warm weather of summer it is not
because we are staying in from the summer heat. It only means that many of our members
have temporarily left us for a period of visiting with family and friends in other places. As a
result we can meet at a single table for lunch. During the months of June, July, August &
September, we will meet the second Thursday of each month at 11:30 am at the Village Inn
in Apache Junction. Hope to see you there!
Pastor Sharon will be on vacation
June 30-July 23. If you have a
pastoral emergency during this
time (illness, hospitalization, death
or other crisis), please leave a
message at the church office and
they will have someone get in touch
with you. Thank you!
Office hours may vary throughout the summer due to staff
vacations. Please call the office at 480-982-2259, prior to
coming in to assure someone will be here to assist you.
In an emergency please leave a message, and someone will get
back to you ASAP.
A Summer of Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty
A number of years ago, there was begun a movement to get people to practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty. The basic premise was that practicing kindness and beauty
would lend itself to an increase in the quality of life in our communities.
There were books published, whole communities got involved. In one city, a newspaper published
stories of people being “caught” doing a kindness to someone else.
I propose that we make this summer one of Practicing Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Acts
of Beauty. Our summer worship services will revolve around Kindness and Beauty, and we will highlight and celebrate those acts as we encounter them.
To prepare for this, I would encourage each and every one of us, no matter where we are this summer to begin to notice acts of kindness, and to thank the “perpetrators” of kindness when we see
them.
Here are some ideas to get you started … you can cut this out and take it with you!
Pick up the tab for
the table next to
you at a restaurant
Give a huge tip to
someone when they
least expect it
Smile A lot
Tell ALL your family
members how much you
appreciate them
Give another driver your
parking spot
Let someone
jump the line at
the grocery store
Pick up trash
Stop and help
someone change
a flat tire
Walk your friend’s dog
Send someone a
handwritten note
Compliment your waiter/
waitress to their manager
Help your neighbor carry
out their trash
Send a thank you note to someone who helped you in the past
