“Some of the benefits [of] working at Hancock Lumber is they provide
me with a cell phone and a computer so if I need to work from home some
days I can do that. They also offer discounts on lumber and any materials
that we purchase and that actually helped me build my first home.”
What do you do here at Hancock Lumber? What skills do you need to be good at your job?
I am a Project Pro here at Hancock Lumber. I deal with homeowners, contractors that come in
on a daily basis, problem solving, helping them design decks, kitchens, garages, setting up deliveries. My position is really good for somebody that is good with design and visual spatial and
problem solving skills and good with math because you always have to be looking at the size of
spaces and what will fit into that particular space.
What was your experience with school. Did you like school?
I went to Lake Region High School in Naples, Maine. I enjoyed school. I played sports; my favorite sport was softball. I was a catcher so in that position I had to do team work a lot. Here
at Hancock Lumber I use a lot of those skills because I do have to be a team player in helping
out a lot with a lot of different things. Being a team member with the homeowner because I
am helping them and I have to make sure I am doing everything they want and helping them to
accomplish their goal.
Tell us about your career path here at Hancock Lumber.
I started at Hancock Lumber right out of high school from where I would answer the phones
and stock the shelves and then I moved to the inside sales support where I assisted the outside
salesmen and dealt directly with the contractors. And from there I went into the Project Pro
position where I am right now. I feel like this is really where I want to be; it is an exciting job and
I love dealing with different people on a daily basis.
What does your day look like and why do you like this job?
I really love my job because no day is the same. One day I could be out at a job site measuring
windows or doors for a customer. Another day I could possibly be having a customer inside the
showroom showing them around to different deck products, different doors, windows to help
them get a feel for what they want then from there I show them different products that I feel
are a good fit for them.

Have you had any special training here to help you?
At Hancock Lumber, we have been trained to use a deck and garage program. It is really helpful
on a day to day basis. It can show railing details, decking details, colors, the framing details for
the do-it-yourselfers. I think it is a really good visual tool for a homeowner to be able to come in
and see within minutes what their deck could potentially look like.
Did you ever have a mentor? How did s/he help you?
I had a mentor, Tom Quinn, he worked with me from the very beginning. He taught me everything I know from being my own person, to being strong and independent and just really helped
me throughout the work process I have had here.
What does working here offer you for quality of life?
Some of the benefits I like working at Hancock Lumber is they provide me with a cell phone and
a computer so if I need to work from home some days I can do that. They also offer discounts
on lumber and any materials that we purchase and that actually helped me build my first home.
Another thing I like about Hancock Lumber is that we have a personal development plan and
this really helps people grow in what they want to be further in the company.
